I’m doing a million things today so I can leave tomorrow morning for the World Series of Poker . . . so this will have to be a very brief entry.
As promised yesterday, the pre-release of Just A Geek: Teh Audiobook is now available. This is exactly like a performance of the material, rather than a boring reading, so it includes the complete text of the book, as well as tons of the asides (audio footnotes probably sounds better, right?) that audiences hear at performances, and a bonus “making-of” CD with outtakes (how many times can I say “Fucking shitass crap! Let’s pick that up.” in the course of a year? The answer will shock and surprise nobody who knows me.) Until Sean Bonner and I finish the artwork, it’s available at a discount, because Uncle Willie loves you.

First one to post?! Woo-hoo!
Two comments, Wil:
1)I can’t wait to pick up this audio version, not only for my hubby, who can’t keep his hands off my copy of Just a Geek, but can’t find enough time in the day to sit and read it, but also for me, because you are freakin’ hilarious!
2)Funny that you mentioned sales on amazon picking up for you last week, because I myself purchased Dancing Barefoot, having laughed my ass off at Just a Geek. It’s not here yet, but I’ll probably devour it, too.
Good luck at the poker tour. Kick some ass.
I see the Just a Geek charity auction is up to $400. How cool is that??? I just wanted to say thanks to you, as your blog is the very first I ever read on the Internet (it seems like eons ago now.) I got inspired, started blogging, and then fell off the wagon after someone got fairly nasty with comments. I chickened out. Then, I started reading yours again, found ones like Shane Nickerson’s, etc., and got refocused and starting typing away again. I don’t know if I’ll ever be a published author, but getting inspiration from the creativity of folks like you and some other fun, smart, witty bloggers really helps schlubs like me to get busy writing. Blogging helped get me my first gig as a public radio commentator last week (whoo-hoo – a paid writer and everything) and I just want to tell you – your willingness to talk, ramble, and share does light a fire under those just dipping toes in the pool.
Just a word of thanks from a total stranger.
Cheers,
Merujo
I just got JAG in the mail today. Read it all the way thru. That’s quite an opus you’ve got there, Wil.
I’ll have to hold off on JAG:TAB for now though, I’m kinda strapped for cash right now. No matter how much I pray, my debts won’t pay themselves off, something about wanting MY money. Can you believe that?
I look forward to it though…someday. :/
My daughter, Katy (6 years old) is looking over my shoulder and just said “Mamma, I want to see another Wil Wheaton book.”
Of course, she just meant a picture on the website, but hey, out of the mouths of babes!
😀
Good luck, Wil! Kick some Vegas ass!
I fucking love you for this. Show those boys in Vegas how it’s done, man.
Rock on, kick some butt in Vland.
Wil wrote: “Uncle Willie loves you”
Which evokes a mental scenario that, since “Uncle Willie” is 5 years younger that I, I Just Don’t Need. };^)>
Woohoo, poker! Best of luck to you Wil, we all know you are great. How long before we get to read all about your adventures in poker-land? Not long I hope.
Wil – A Quick Question re: Teh Audio Book
I’m very tempted to buy the MP3 version (immediate gratification here I come) but I just want to know how the files are broken down in terms of length. I can’t fast forward on my MP3 player (only skip tracks) so it’s important for me that tracks be a manageable length.
Thanks.
I don’t suppose there is anything you can do about it, but…10 bucks seems a little steep for shipping an audio CD.And I was ready to hit “buy” too. Anyways, good luck in the WSOP.
There are 53 tracks, ranging from about 7:00 – 12:40 min each. Mr. Wil, I just want you to know this is the first time I’ve ever bought something um, non physical? I feel a little dirty paying for a download, but I decided you’re worth it. 🙂
Good luck at the poker tournament!!!
Kick ass.
🙂 Liz
Having listened to the Gnomedex reading, I just had to have the whole book – download started, only 2 hours to go!
I just downloaded the mp3 set but can’t find the bonus making-of. Anybody knows where I should be looking?
I’m startled at the price – $35? And this is the intro price? Of course I’m unfamiliar with making audio books and for the most part what the going rate is but isn’t that steep?
That’s not expensive for an audio book.
Unfortunately, for me at least, the preview URL is not working.
Nothing for it but to hold the nose and jump on in!
Purchased 🙂 I went to three different bookstores locally and none of them had your books – all sold out. I know, I know Amazon.com is our friend, but I can’t exactly pretend to “impulse buy” if I do an Amazon search. I don’t normally buy audio books, but the temptation of hearing Wesley Crusher saying the “f” word was just too much to pass up.
Sorry Uncle Willie, I know you’re more than Wesley, but he was a crush of mine. I’m a geek lover 🙂
I just recently discovered your blog and frightenly enough read the whole darn thing one evening. I’m an aspiring writer myself and your blog has encouraged me to actually finishing one or two of the WIPs simmering on my hard drive. So thank you and cross your fingers for me.
Oh and good luck at your tournament!
Just a Geek audiobook: $35 (presale price)
Shipping for said audiobook: $9.95 (big ouch)
Hearing Uncle Willie swear: priceless
I’ll be camping out by my mailbox…
How long is the intro price going to be at $35?
If I purchase it now it’s a guarantee that I WON’T study for my USMLE (July 16), so I want to buy it as a reward for it on that day.
Congratulations on finishing the recording and good luck in the WSOP. I’ll be sending you mojo in between pharmacology and pathology.
Thanks for the info Meeker. I’ve downloaded JAG:TAB and I’m listening to it now. It’s been pretty engaging and entertaining so far.
Just one word of warning to those about to download it. The connection won’t be super-fast even over high speed connections so make sure you have enough time to let it download. I’m on a university connection that would usually download 320Mb in around 2 minutes but it took around half an hour. I was also late for a meeting because of it! 🙂
I’ve now got the audio book, just finished chapter 5 – its the best use of my Ipod ever!
Woo Hoo! I’ve been waiting for this audiobook since Wil was a guest on Your Mac Life.
As an Audible.com addict, though, I have gotten used to my audio books in a certain format. Specifically, a few really big files, that are bookmarkable with chapter markers.
So, in a fit of boredom at work, I combined all the 53 MP3 files into 3 big files. Each one is between 2 and 3 hours and has the chapters bookmarked.
Like a moron, encoded em too big (128k) so the files are huge, but I am fixing that now.
In any case, Wil, if you read this, I’d be happy to send these files to you. Maybe you would want to offer them as a distribution choice.
Loren
Just finished listening to the audio book.
It moved me man.
Thanks for the hours of enjoyment!
Hey. Listening to the audio book. Sweet. Gald I got it, one of the best audio books I’ve ever heard. The extras are great. Can’t wait for the next one.
Got your audio book today, reading the book was awesome, but adding your voice personally to your own story really is priceless. Your voice just makes the stories come alive, like no one else could. Even after I have long finished it I plan on taking it with me during my travels just to brighten my day. Thanks Wil, for providing the audio book.
Hey Wil. Remember this?
LOL

Oops, I meant this
OMG! I so need this!
Luckily I have a few extra babysitting jobs this weekend, so I will be able to swing it! YESSSS!!!!
You are not my best friend.
🙂
Ok, just a memory jog from June 28th Slashdot discussion.
Just my note of appreciation on your notes, ref: Enterpise LCARS
Oddly, I’ve waiting to read that article for a couple of years (deja vu feeling here).
Earth: Final Conflict, had what I thought at the time was an equally interesting interface concept back in the day. Never could get a hold of the designer on that to hear his insights…
Thanks,
Jim
