Announcing the first WWdN poker tourney

• WWdN in Exile

After playing tournaments every day for almost a month, and then hitting a terrible losing streak, I just wanted to walk away from poker for a bit. It’s been a nice break, but I’ve recently started to get the itch to play again.

Anne and I went to Vegas yesterday for the opening of the new Blue Man Group show at Venetian (full review is coming soon — short review: it’s awesome). We stayed at Mirage, and though I was more interested in sitting with my wife than sitting at a poker table, walking past the poker room reminded me of how much I miss the damn game.

So, I think I’ll get back on the horse with a WWdN semi-private tournament, this Friday afternoon. It’s just a $10+1 buy-in, so it’s affordable for most people. To come and play with me and other WWdN readers, sign up for PokerStars and then when you log in, go to Tourneys -> Private -> WWdN: Where’s My Burrito? Invitational, or you can just search for tournament number 13722477. The tournament will happen on Friday the 14th at 4:00PM EST. I know this is a little early for West Coast players, but it should make it easier for international players to join us. The password is "monkey."

In easy-to-cut-and-paste-into-your-own-blog form:

What: WWdN Where’s My Burrito? Invitational
Where: PokerStars.
When: Friday, October 14th. 4:00 PM EST
Password: monkey
Tournament number: 13722477
Buy-in: $10+1

This tournament is open to anyone who reads WWdN or WWdN:IE, or who happens to know that the password is monkey. πŸ™‚

It should be fun, a nice warm-up to the PokerStars Blogger Tourney, and if enough people show up (and enjoy it, of course) I will make it a weekly event, with the time (and buy-in) rotating to accomodate everyone who wants to play. As an added incentive, I’ll name the next tournament after the player who knocks me out.

I know two days is short notice, but I hope lots of you can make it. I’ll be sure to give more notice for future tourneys.

I hope to see you there!

Bah! I’ll still be at work. But I’d really like to play – judging by the railbirds you get when you play, I’m sure there’ll be multi-week interest. I’ll catch it another week.

P.S. No books or other goods from pokerstars for the final table/bounty from the Katrina Tournies. Any idea on their schedule?

Mike –
Sorry you can’t bust me again πŸ˜‰
I’ll check with PokerStars to see what’s up with the Katrina bounties. I know most of the people who work on that stuff have been in Europe for the EPT.

Sadly, I’ll also still be at work–I’ve been considering getting in on the “real money” tournaments now that I’m not losing “fake money” anymore, but the timing for the game is a bit inconvenient.
Now, if you were to run something at 2 a.m. EST….

I would soooo play if I had the money. I’ll most definitely play in the near future… once I get my bank account set up.
As for the blogger tourny… I’m so there. πŸ˜‰

I’m in. Finally got set up to play online (to think–I’ve been playing poker for a year, but never once online), and I might as well kick things off by playing in your tournament.
I’ll be sure to bring my hammer.

4PM EST would be a little early for me even if I was on the east coast, as I’d expect I’d still be at work at that hour on a Friday.
My Windows machine is currently in my garage, and I never got Stars to work on my laptop in Linux, anyway.
Maybe next time.

I’m on vacation this week so I should have time to go in. I tried to sign up and only had $10.70 in my PokerStars account. I went into a $0.02/$0.04 table until I got it up to $11.02 to register … *phew* … I’m all set up and ready to go … player #6.

I’ve just signed up for my first online poker tournament.
ts 9pm BST, should have got dinner out of the way and kids in bed by then, just got to get permission from my wife!
I expect to be either busted out fairly early on, or find myself foldi…

Hey wil.. how do you buy in? CC? check?
I have been trying to find you on poker stars for some time.. keeps telling me you are not found. I am central time so maybe that has something to do with it.. but I am really interested in getting into your tour. πŸ™‚ let me know email me please @ [email protected] if you can. Thanks, Misty Barnes

Are most of your foreign readers in Europe? It might be convenient for them, but for those of us on the other side of the world it’s really early.
That being said I might be up at that time (it being 5 am in Japan) but I can’t figure out how to get money into my danged pokerstars account. Another problem of being overseas.

A couple days ago you mentioned Pandora.com which is a terrific idea…
not to mention the little high we all get when we find music that is (to ourselves) undiscovered
Now for the shameless plug
I’ve been listening to Pilate since they were an unsigned indie band working hard throughout the Toronto music scene … have a look for their first album Caught By The Window… they’re working on the follow up now which I’m really looking forward to
It is amazing fall driving music

sorry
I guess I’m a comment hog
Maple Music (www.maplemusic.com) is doing a phenomenal job of finding the good music from the North
No really
They’ve got some stellar acts signed and work hard not to dillute or whitewash any of the indie feel

I’ll be at work during this tourney, so I’ll miss it. But I’ll be watching for the next one, and I’ll be playing in the Blogger tourney on the 23rd. Maybe I’ll have time to build up the leftover money in my PokerStars account to meet the $10+1 buy-in, instead of having to make another deposit.

4pm EST. Yah, that would be when I’m at work.. on the east coast. For whom exactly is 4pm EST convenient? Maybe people in the UK and thereabouts…. Bermudians?
Will have to catch it next time!

Sure, make me work a few hours late tonight so I can leave early tomorrow (at least that’s the plan for now)! If it’s as big a hit as it looks like it will be, you may want to try a schedule like:
1st Friday of the month: 8PM ET
2nd Friday of the month: 6PM ET
3rd Friday of the month: 4PM ET
4th Friday of the month: 2PM ET
That will help your readers world wide make at least one game a month plus give you at least one Friday off a quarter!

I’ll be leaving work to play!
how do the private tournaments work for you, do you use the software to set one up yourself, or do you email someone? i hope to get 2000 fpp so i can set up private tables to run a league at pokerstars. if i get it going i’ll invite my favorite blogger! damm i wish the fpp could be built up a little bit easier…..

24. MstrMan says:
13 October, 2005 at 8:55 am

Like many others, I’ll unfortunately be at work.
However, I am signed up for the Blogger tourney on the 23rd. Haven’t seen your name there yet, Wil. Being a blogger and PS Team member I thought you’d be one of the first to sign up for it.
Meh, maybe you’re not interested in going to the WPT Caribbean event.

25. ak_hepcat says:
13 October, 2005 at 10:12 am

Dangit! Sometimes living in Alaska has its disadvantages, and timing is the big one.
Sigh.
Yeah, it’ll be -noon- when the tourney starts playing, but that just means i’ll be sitting at my desk eating lunch, and no way to play.
I like the rotating schedule, but you should increase the step from 2H to 3H at least… maybe even 4H, as that would let you span a 12H period over the month.

26. robd says:
13 October, 2005 at 11:08 am

$11!!! Do you think we’re made of money?
hmmm, 4pm on a Friday. Will need to leave work early AND tell the wife she’s looking after the boy. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

27. 787style says:
13 October, 2005 at 12:28 pm

Little early for the West Coast? This is early for the East Cost too, not to mention the midwest. We can’t all sit at home and write for a living . πŸ™‚ On a weekday, entrants will be hard to come by this early, hope to be able to play another day.

28. Dani says:
13 October, 2005 at 12:53 pm

Don’t worry if you can’t make it out guys … there’ll probably be other Tourneys that Wil will set up.
And think of it this way, you would have to lose your money to me! But if you really want to, you can just mail me your cheque for $11 πŸ˜€

13 October, 2005 at 1:55 pm

I’ll jump onto the “I live in EST and 4PM is still way too early for those of us with day jobs” bandwagon…
Secondly, what is a $10+1 fee? I mean, I’m sure that’s somehow different from $11, but how exactly?
Thirdly, I really really wish PokerStars would put out a Linux platform client. Maybe something in Java, that could run on any machine that has a JRE? Can you talk these guys into that?

32. Mudboy says:
13 October, 2005 at 3:03 pm

10+1 means that 10 goes to the prize pool, and 1 goes to the house (PokerStars.com). I’m at home watching the youngest then, but have to pick up the kindergartener at 2pm Pacific. Either bust our early, or win enough to survive the blindings, but I’ll give it a try…
On the linux platform, I’m pretty sure you can play on pokerstars using WINE… In fact, I think thats what Wil does…
Also, although Java pretends to be platform independant, we all know that it isn’t even Browser independant, let alone OS independant… πŸ˜‰ No Java, please…

of course, you knew.
i swear i almost flew out of my chair when you suddenly appeared. and talked the most out of all the interviewees!
lookin’ good and sharp!

34. Wil says:

What Mudboy said.
I hear the complaints about the starting time loud and clear. The other tournaments I run will start at different times, so everyone gets a chance to play.
I’m also going to do different buy-in levels, too, as low as $5 +1 up to $30 +3.

I’ll be at work as well but I’ll watch when I get home…*however*…if there will be future events in the offing, then I would definitely like to take part. Any time as I’ll be out on medical leave until mid December.
Now to figure out how to get money in there seeing as my cc hates online gaming….*ponder ponder*

Wow, if I knew absolutely anything about poker, I’d join in! But I’m a poker n00b, so I’ll just wait and read about the tournament later. Have fun everyone! :o)

39. Lytspeed says:

Doh! Thanks to Southernpxie’s post, I realized I could use my Typekey ID that I created for posting at WWDN.
I’ll be playing tomorrow and in the blogger tourney. I might have to leave early to pick up my stepson, though, so I’m probably going to be sitting out next to Mudboy with a huge stack of chips. πŸ˜‰ I should only be gone about 25 minutes, though. Hopefully I won’t blind out.

40. Lytspeed says:
13 October, 2005 at 8:32 pm

That is, assuming I get that far without busting out, of course.

HEy Wil,
I haven’t abandoned you. I check back on your page often and saw the same headline so I never bothered to scroll down to see the update!
You should move the UPDATE to the top of the page so people who check will see it first!
Now I have a backlog to read!! πŸ™‚

45. Lytspeed says:

Will, just so you know, musicians and families of musician-types are boycotting Blue Man. The show is full of scabs and the production company is making a mint by running the show with all non-union folks.
It’s up to them, but it really screws the artists in the towns they travel to.

You should definately do this again!
