Announcing the second WWdN poker tourney

Last Friday’s WWdN poker tourney at PokerStars was an epic success . . . I even went out bluffing with the hammer!

96 people showed up to play, and as far as I can tell everyone had a great time, especially my CardSquad cohorts Derek and Joanne, who both made the final table, which included some of the greatest poker bloggers on the Internets.

Joanne eventually ran over everyone to get heads up with whoisspain, before she won the tourney. Congratulations, Joanne! The general consensus in pokerblogistan is that Joanne knows what the hell she is doing, and April and Iggy  encouraged her to blog about it, so we can steal all her great ideas and kick her out of the band. Luckily for us, Joanne wrote a fantastic series of posts at CardSquad discussing her tournament strategy, and how she arrived at it. The boobies is here, and it’s up to part six as I write this today. I highly recommend it for anyone who is thinking about playing in any tournaments, including our weekly WWdN affairs.

Speaking of! I’ve made a couple of changes to the tourney this week: the starting time is a bit later, and the tourney is named in honor of Decker711 who busted me out when my hammer bluff ran into his AK. (I had outs until he flopped two pair. Yeah.) I think that I’ll use that criteria to name the tourneys, at least for the near future, unless someone can come up with something better (like giving me piles of cash for the naming rights, for instance)

I hope that the later starting time and longer notice can accomodate a few more players than last week. Remember that this is a semi-private affair, open to anyone who knows the password is "monkey."

  1. Sounds very tempting, though being new to poker (no, really), I have a feeling I’d get quickly whupped! Still sounds like fun though!

  2. How about calling the tournaments ‘The password is monkey’ ? Or perhaps that would be a bit too subtle for some people.

  5. Michael: Err, it’s Friday the 21st. Fixxored. My bad.
    Misty: This isn’t a charity tournament, so the buy-in goes into a prize pool that we’re all playing for. Last week, enough players registered to pay the final table (9), but if we get over 100, it will pay the final two tables (18).
    The +1 goes to the house, like an entry fee.

  10. I actually won enough early to survive picking my oldest child up from school… He was late to…
    Then I hit hit a couple of nice hands, and then proceeded to go on spree of good hands getting beat, sometimes by better ones, sometimes by worse ones… Its Pokerstars after all… I got knocked out by Quads in 3 our of 4 tourney’s that day… What are the odds… I had Nut Boat, Nut Flush, and Low Boat in those hands…
    I will say its nice to play in a tourney where people talk and have something to talk about, other than the bully in seat 3… Much fun.

  11. Until high school football season is over in a few weeks, I will have to miss any Friday evening (Central Time) tourneys. I help my son’s school band with their equipment at the games. After that, hopefully I can play with y’all! (Sorry, living in Texas does that to ya.)
    Meanwhile, I will be in the Blogger tourney this Sunday, so maybe I will see some of you there.

  16. A non-players poker dream just before waking today. I beat either Cindy Violette, Amanda Tapping or Allison Fisher and her pair of aces with a 5-9 straight.

  18. Hey.. Wil…do you ever play in anything other than buy ins? Like a regular free table or free sit and go 9 player table once in a while? 🙂
    Us poor folk cant even say hi because to chat as an observer you have to buy in :p And I am broke right now.. But wanted to say hi 🙂

  27. Quick question:
    I use a Mac. Any advice for poker playing? I looked all over the PokerStars site, but it looks like its Windows only? (I hope I’m wrong) Or, do I need to get something like VirtualPC?
