50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Radio Free Burrito Episode 3 (fixed. again.)

  • Podcast

This episode of The Burrito is the longest, yet, weighing in at 37 minutes. It was so long, in fact, that I had to break it into two parts in garage band, and use audacity to join them together. However, it’s relatively small; just 15.2MB. I listened to it in headphones and through my Powerbook’s speakers, and it sounds fine to me, but let me know if you think it sucks. You can also let me know if you like it, of course.

I’m not very happy with this episode, as I fell into one of my chief complaints about podcasts in general: it rapidly devolves into just some guy talking about bullshit. I mostly did the show so I could stay on the weekly schedule, and I really just wanted to share this song that I made in garageband, because I think it’s kind of cool.

I’m always interested in feedback which can be sent to podcast at wil wheaton dot net. The feedback some listeners have chosen to send in has been extremely useful, whether it’s praise or constructive criticism, so thank you all for that. Questions for next week’s show, which will focus exclusively on family and holiday themes, can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net.

Anyway, If you have 37 minutes to spend listening to me blather on about bullshit, please enjoy: Download radio_free_burrito_episode_three.mp3
<– the second fixed version. The first one had huge gaps where I addicentally erased a track, while the second one had an additional track layered over the beginning that I didn’t delete when I replaced the first deleted track, for fuck’s sake. But this should be the "good" version now, and if you have one of the earlier versions, hermetically seal it and start planning for your retirement.

Show Notes:

  • Yes, this should be called Episode Two. I am an idiot.
  • Continuing the "I’m an idiot" meme, I inadvertently deleted an entire track, which took some of the bumpers with it. This results in about 20 seconds of silence around the 5 minute mark. I will repair this, and replace the current file later tonight. Sorry about that. Okay, thanks to some audacity-fu and a bit of garageband voodoo, I fixed it. Nothing to hear here. Move along.
  • The intro music comes from Squirrel Nut Zippers’ 1996 gold album, Hot. The song is titled "Hell."
  • My tune is called "Lakeside Shadow." I made it in Garageband.
  • Comments can be sent to podcast at wil wheaton dot net, questions can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net. Please use a descriptive subject line.

It was great. You tell great stories. But, what happened during the first break? Was there supposed to be nothing there?

I love SNZ! Have you ever seen Dead Like Me? “Hell” is one of the main songs from the show, like when they’re doing all the advertising.

You should make it a tradition just skip all the 2 episodes.

Dude, Wil. That ambient track is GREAT and would make an excellent background for spoken word poetry.

Loved it! The song was great. You have a real ear for music and your description of what you were seeing in your mind was fabulous. As for Avatar, I must say, as a 23 year old, it’s one of my guilty pleasures. I love that show, with my curtains drawn and the lights off. The whole thing was so much fun to listen to. Star Wars is one of my favorite stories from my childhood. HOWEVER, when it came to your comment about the newest three Star Wars movies, I’m afraid we’re gonna have to fight (kidding). More about that at my own blog. Anyway, I’ll be back next week! Have a good week, Wil!

    Hey Wil –
I liked that song you wrote for your podcast. Do you think I could borrow it for a porn shoot that I am doing? I think it would be perfect.

“Hot” is a great album, and Burrito ep 2 is the most interesting thing I’ve encountered today.
In viewing this post through Bloglines, Feedburner embedded an ad for squirrel nuts. That would be the second most interesting thing I’ve encountered today.
Keep it up, Wil, and always know when to hold ’em.

Ok…just for those who want to read a bit more about “that well known fact” Wil mentions about people doing and saying stuff online that they wouldn’t normally do… http://www.rider.edu/~suler/psycyber/disinhibit.html

    I enjoyed the musical piece.
RE: the USO tour. Kathy Griffin (self proclaimed D-Lister) did a USO tour and she’s not a major celebrity. I consider you to be a bigger celeb than her so you could totally do a USO tour.

“Lakeside Shadow” was awesome. It mellowed me out here at the office as I listened to RFB yesterday.
    Keep up the amazing job!
Also, I picked up The Dresden Dolls after giving those songs a listen. You’ve got great taste. 😛
And one can never go wrong with Squirrel Nut Zippers!

delivery is different this time…more agressive…voice huskier…if you get tired of talking to yourself…bring on the guests!…surely one of your friends would agree to make an appearance…they don’t have to be famous…just funny or interesting or some combination of the two…maybe you could conduct an interview with a complete stranger…who knows…it’s hard to broadcast alone…i’ve tried it…and it’s hard to maintain any kind of freshness…but so far you have done a good job keeping the podcast going all by yourself…i’m impressed…but please consider bringing some guests into the Burrito orbit.

  22. d. burr says:

not to trivialize the scene you set up with your song… but i pictured a csi crimescene/lab montage while it was playing…

  24. Khalil A. Cassimally says:

I would love to have the Lakeside Shadow piece on its own as an mp3 file to download. And you’re right Scott, it would make a good background music for spoken poetry.

What kind of hardware are you using to record?
    Here’s my setup.
Hardware: Behringer Eurorack UB1202 Mixer, 4 cheap as hell microphones, a Yamaha PSR-292 keyboard for music/special effects, and a decent headset for whomever is working the mixer. If you ever plan of having a guest or hook up a dvd player/vcr for a movie review I highly recommend that mixer, but save yourself several headaches by getting four decent microphones (not omni-directional unless you really want your audience to hear your faucet dripping ;D) and some professional microphone cable, and look for some second hand microphone stands and clips. The stands and clips are more expensive than the recording hardware actually, so for now I’m just using a GI-Joe tank, Omega Supreme, an old lamp, and various other lego constructions for microphone stands.
Software-wise I’m using Audacity 1.2.4 for recording, and LAME 3.96 for encoding within Audactiy.
It’s taken me about five episodes (the first four sound like crap, but I’m too lazy to remaster them) to get the technical glitches and other assorted bugs worked out. Little things like putting a quilt over the table we use helps, because every table bump without the blanket as a shock absorber sounds like someone is taking a hammer to your ears.
And if you have guests you really have to be a nazi when it comes to noises and talking off microphone. My show started off as a late-night community radio broadcast. So it took me damn near forever to edit out curses, background noise, and music for the internet version. You can find it by clicking through my profile page, but just be warned that the site is most definatly “Not Safe For Work.”
Your show makes me feel stupid for it to take me five episodes to get mine worked out and sounding decent. Nice job 🙂

    again I love your podcast.
as for the question and answer series on your ?show?
I think it would be in your rational best interests to try and track down James Earl Jones to see if he would do the voice for you . I mean, you hcan I didad to have met him.
wouldn’t it have been neat to have him do a festive little jingle.
or you could go the other route and have someone like Paris Hilton do it.
boy, if there was ever to diametrically opposed people, it would be James Earl Jones and Paris Hilton
on one hand, you have a brilliant actor with an amazing voice, and on the other, a stupid spoiled whore. that’s just my opinion.
anyway keep cranking out those podcasts.

An old fogey raises her hand in the back — voting to hear your mom’s commentary about the filming of “Stand by Me” and your wife’s version of how you two met. And though I am a generation ahead, you hit the nail on the head on Star Wars. I can still quote long sections of dialogue from the “first” three. The first VHS tape we ever bought (Xmas 1986, $79!!) was the first ST, and it is still viewed. I saw each of the “second” set one time in a theater — and have never watched them on DVD.

As for Star Wars, I watched the last 3 once each for closure. I think Lucas is making a HUGE mistake by not releasing the ‘Non’ Special editions of the original trillogy for fans to make the decision on which they prefer.
Thanks for reading my email, and as you can see from another post, you are much admired by the fans. I emailed you the info to get started. Hope to see you in Afghanistan ( Central Command ), if not then one day I may make one of your shows in Cali. Do you sign autographs after ( or before )?

    Hey, Wil~
Loved the SNZ’s, loved your composition, liked your idea about doing a ‘Stand By Me’ commentary.
I was a little dismayed, however, that you referred negatively to ‘Knitters’ as though we could all be lumped together in one Venn diagram-style corral and painted with the same brush.
*You* don’t like it when people bundle you up under a category (‘child actor’, for instance) and prejudge you in that way. Don’t knitters deserve to be treated as individuals, too?
I came to your defense in the comments section of the blog you are referring to; other knitters posted links to your blog and recounted the correct story. Which is how I found your blog, enjoyed it, and put In Exile in my ‘Links’ section after mentioning how glad I was that my son had always reminded me of you, and how I hoped he would continue to do so.
I still hope so. But I also hope he will hesitate a moment before condemning people wholesale based on one piece of supposedly identifying information, no matter what perceived slight he may have been dealt in the past by someone bearing a glancing similarity.
I hope you will too. We geeks should cut each other a little slack.
    Eileen

  41. Wil says:
    21 December, 2005 at 12:16 am

Eileen, I wasn’t painting all knitters with one broad stroke (nor do I think of “all knitters” as one thing or another, other than people who have I skill I don’t think I’ll ever possess.)
What I meant was that, from time to time, WWdN will be exposed to a new sub-community on the Internets, like vs. Excitebike gamers, or Geocachers, or (in this case) knitters.
I know better than to let one person speak for anyone other than him or herself. I’m sorry you misunderstood me, and I regret that I didn’t make myself more clear.
Like I’ve said on the podcast, I’m climbing the learning curve pretty rapidly.

I’ve enjoyed the blog for sometime and I’ve been enjoying the podcast as well.
Playing around in Garage Band is a lot of fun. I like to go to CompUSA, play around on a Mac in GB for 20 and walk away leaving an original tune playing (at a reasonable volume).
Interesting tune. It says two words to me: Tangerine Dream, of whom I’m a fairly big fan. Nice tune, definitely enjoyed it and appreciate you sharing it with us.
    Looking forward to more podcasts!
