Radio Free Burrito Episode 8

  • Podcast

Shellymortonlogo
Today, it’s a brief political rant (you have been warned), then it’s all questions and answers, no stupid meta-talk about what I’m going to do, just getting down to it and having a good time.

A lot of people have asked if I can change the numbering of the episodes; I did that on this one. It’s called 008.RadioFreeBurrito. I hope that works for ya.

Show Notes:

  • This episode is long. In fact, it’s way over an hour, so . . . uh . . . get comfortable, I guess. It’s 25.6 MB (!)
  • If I didn’t answer your question here, it’s not a reflection on you or your question; it just means that I couldn’t think of a worthwhile answer.
  • I feel like I hit my stride somewhere around the thirty-minute mark. I could feel a change in my body, and I felt more relaxed, more entertained, and happier. I think it comes across in the show, so I thought I’d comment on it.
  • Also, at the 33-minute mark, where I’m talking about "Americanizing Shelly," Garageband band ran out of space, so I had to export, open a new file, and combine the two in Audacity (yeah, I forgot to set the time and tempo to allow for maximum talky-talky. It’s jarring, but you didn’t miss anything good, I promise.
  • A picture of me posing with Pigs-n-Space can be seen at the Muppet Wiki. Oh my. Thanks, mdstudio. I think.
  • Comments can be sent to podcast at wil wheaton dot net, questions can be sent to ask at wil wheaton dot net. Please use a descriptive subject line.
  • The image I chose for this show was sent to me by WWdN:iX reader Shelly. Thanks, Shelly!

Thanks for listening. I hope you enjoy it.

I’m glad you let this run over the 10 minute mark. I feel like you really got a chance to just settle in a do your thing, and it really came across as genuine and funny and, most importantly, fun.

There is no sweeter revenge against a self-imposed limitation than freedom.
You sounded fitter, happier, more productive. Now make an album full of songs with incomprehensible words.
P.S. Did anyone else notice that, with the exception of the tag, there were no iterations of The Word? (not in the Colbert Report-sense, but in the OMG-I-said-it-again-ain’t-that-interes– unusual)

Not to mention it would give you something to print those logos on.
Just an idea. I know nothing about buying printing and selling t-shirts. But I would buy and wear a Radio Free Burito tee.

I emailed you about this a while back, don’t know if you got it, but i have been totally in love with you since i was like 12…I found your website, got excited, read for a while, and even though you have been my main man for 16 years, I got bored. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it, you’re just not as funny as you used to be. I loved learning about your personality and life, but you haven’t really shown it for the past year. I still love you, but I just don’t run to your website every morning like I used to. Your just not as funny as you used to be.

Great show as usual, I am really enjoying my daily Radio Free Burrito, I sure hope you keep doing this for a while, it is truly hawesome. And have a great time at the convention this weekend, as a long time Trek fan, I have never been to a convention so I am muy jealous. Oh and you were right on with what you think were suck episodes of TNG, ESPECIALLY “Angel 1” That is my least favorite ever, utter crap. Keep up the good work, and I am still rooting for your cow to be a nice chartreuse.

Regarding the theater cell phone filter, parents of small children aside (as I am one of those), there could be a very real, very dangerous (and litigious) situation created for people who are waiting for organs (transplants).

    1) Have you auditioned for the Harry Shearer’s The Show? You’d fit right in.
    2) Why hasn’t satellite radio offered you a job? I’d pay.
    3) When you talked to Riley, after mistakenly uttering the words Walk and Run, you dropped out of “Wil Wheaton: The Podcast” mode *hands on hips, chin in air* into “Wil Wheaton: the person who owns and loves his dog”. And while I enjoyed virtually your entire podcast, that unexpected moment touched me more than almost anything else. Sappy, I know, and probably frustrating on your end, because I like missed the whole point of your podcast. But it was a sweet, real moment. Thanks.

    Wil Wheaton Slams Babies!

Ok, now this is beyond the fold-Wil Wheaton just said on Radio Free Barrito 8 that babies are slugs……….

  26. MJ says:
    10 March, 2006 at 11:33 am

You need to get a job in radio! You rock on the air.
(I say that too much. Rock. What does that mean?)
Anywho, I have said it before and will say it again, you just have one of those voices. One of those voices that is really easy to listen to on the radio. Someone that I’d wanna listen too regularly, because you have a smooth voice. This isn’t a come-on, I sware. You’re married, I’m married…I digress.
But seriously, get yer agent lookin’ at radio!
And, unlike the previous poster, I will NOT pay for Satellite. Music should be free, man.

  27. Ignatz says:
    10 March, 2006 at 11:38 am

I still believe television should be free, too.

  28. forgottenpixel says:

Firstly let me just say thank you for explaining the clicking noise, I thought I was the only one who heard it.
I really enjoyed this episode. While I liked being able to listen to the episodes daily, I think you need more time to fully express your ideas/thoughts – so I really like the idea of no time restriction episodes.
You thoroughly made my morning 100% more enjoyable than it would have been.
In my opinion it’s not what you talk about, or don’t talk about it’s just being able to listen to/read your take on whatever it is you feel like talking about that’s interesting to me. I mean, I could write about the very same topics as you and never be able to reach the level that you are at in terms of creativity/entertainment. So for everyone who does or doesn’t like something you write about I am sure there are those of us who just enjoy the good reads.

    Wil,
Though I made a quick, snarky comment on my blog, I do have to say your Radio Free Burrito Episode #8 sounded perfectly smooth, crisp and funny. I hope you are not holding yourself to expectations of say a movie or well-made tv show (I know, I know. In today’s world that is an oxymoron).
So, go put the darn thing in over at iTunes (to which I finally Borged)

    Best. Podcast. Ever.
It like you said “screw how long it takes, I’m just gonna keep talkin’ until I’m done talkin'”, and it was hawesome. I have to say I also liked the “good girl” moment with Riley. You can’t get more “I’m just a guy, not a full-of-himself big shot” than that.
And I’m not just saying that because you answered my question (Woohoo – Wil Wheaton said my name! Fanboy enough for ya?) on the worst TNG episodes. I was wondering if you’d mention the one about “why would anyone take drugs?” – that little conversation between Tasha and Wesley always made me cringe.

Am I the only one who thinks that podcasts should be closer to 10 than to 70 minutes?
I understand that 10 minutes is not working for you Wil, but if you want to be successful on iTunes’ podcast directory, I think you should aim at something closer to 20-30 minutes. (I realise while typing that you probably know this already as I remember you wanted a “tight” podcast.)
BTW: How long are the podcasts at the top of iTunes’ directory typically?

  33. June says:
    10 March, 2006 at 3:23 pm

I don’t agree. 20-30 minutes is still kind of short. 40-55?

Because of the length, I didn’t listen to this podcast right away like I always do with the other ones. I wanted to block off some time and solitude (like I have such a big, important schedule and people flocking to my side every minute… but I digress..) to really listen uninterrupted. I have enjoyed the short podcasts for a lot of reasons, but also simply because I love your voice. But this long one was terrific. And I noticed the midway point that you referred to in your blog about hitting your stride – you were laughing and having fun with the questions. I liked that. I laughed when you were talking about getting up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons – I so did that ritual every week-end. I plopped down in front of the tv in the living room with a bowl full of cheerios, corn flakes or raisin bran (my mom was hot about the healthier cereals so not many of the sugary ones came into the house real often – once in a while sugar smacks or frosted flakes… digressing again…) I had such a great visual memory of that time, which was very cool.
I totally agree with you on the state of affairs with our country and political climate. As a mother, it is truly scary what the current administration is setting us up to confront. Unless there is some intervention, we will experience the repercussions of this period for decades.
Thanks for putting so much time and effort into this podcast – I was completely entertained. You so rock, Wil.

    Doc Bruce Banner,
    Belted by gamma rays
    Turns into the Hulk
    Ain’t he unglamorous (pronounced un-glam-er-ace)
Those cartoons ruled the school. Thor, Captain America, even Spidey. Good times!

Love RFB and love this episode.
I do have one comment regarding what you said about cell phone “jamming” in theaters. You advocate that it’s a bad idea b/c what if a parent needs to receive emergency info re: their child. That’s true…
But what did people do b4 cell phones?
I am not saying what is “right” one way or another….just posing the question in order to facilitate discussion.
    Keep broadcasting!!!

I finally listened to RFB for the first time with this edition. It’s awesome, of course. I’d listened to some of your older audioblogs back when you were still blogging at WWDN (remember those days?).
I feel the need to listen to previous editions of RFB now. You really do have a gift for radio.
iPods? Who needs ’em. I listen while I surf. If I had a real job I’d listen while I worked.

  46. AT says:
    26 May, 2006 at 1:47 pm

The previous comment was made a few moments into the podcast, which I started listening to yesterday and finished today. It was too long for one sitting! It was epic! It was fantastic. Having listened to the entire thing now, I have the following to add:
It’s cool that you mentioned Tara Strong. She is one of the most successful voice over actors and it excites me that I see her name a lot because she briefly went to my high school. Even though this city is huge I still feel a sense of home town pride when one of ours succeeds. Type “Toronto” into IMDB and see the large number of results. If you ever talk to Tara ask about the time she played Maria in a high school production of West Side Story. Toronto natives unite, yo!
I was amused that Riley got excited when you said the word “walk”. It’s a universal dog thing, I think. Ever play the game in which you use words that rhyme with “walk” to see if the dogs get excited?
