So recording Family Guy yesterday ranks in the top five most awesome moments of my acting and geek lives.
Seth MacFarlane directed my session, and when I met him, I said, "Okay, I’m not even going to try to pretend to keep it cool. I am a huge fan, and this is more exciting for me than I can quantify."
Yeah, I said quantify. I say stupid shit like that when I’m giddy and excited.
"Well, if you’re going to do that," he said, "then I’ll have to tell you that Next Generation is my favorite of all the Star Treks, and I’ve seen every episode about a thousand times. The First Duty is just great, man."
I did my best not to faint.
We had a meeting of the mutual admiration society for a few minutes, and then I went into the booth to record my lines. It was incredibly fun and creatively fulfilling, and even though we only worked together for fifteen or twenty minutes, I instantly liked him. He reminded me of my friends from ACME, and I hoped I earned another bit on the show at some point in the future, because he was really fun to work with.
When I was finished recording, I asked him if I could talk a little bit about my episode on my blog, without giving away too many details, and he said that would be fine, so . . .
I play myself, in a story that you could call a tribute to Next Generation. Pretty much everyone from the cast is on board for the episode, and holy shit is it funny.
I can’t divulge any specific story details, or give away any jokes, but there’s a joke with me that, if it makes it to the final cut of the episode, could quite possibly be the funniest thing I’ve ever done on television.
The show will air in about a year, I guess, and I can’t wait to see it.

Awwwww yeah, that’s going to be awesome from the sound of it. Family Guy isn’t my fave, but I definitely love the constant references to the era of those who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s (me among them). A tribute to TNG should be frickin’ hi-larious. Almost all from the cast is involved!? Awwwwwww man. Please keep us posted on when it will air, when it comes time.
Okay… I’ll set my TiVo for a year from now.
That actually sounds pretty awesome if they managed to get the whole Next Generation cast. And, from what little I know of MacFarlane’s work, I can expect several people will most likely die from laughing so damn hard if you all are having fun with yourselves and your characters. Could it be the Best Parody Ever?
Oh, and don’t worry about the giddy speak. I’m constantly getting looks from people (outside of work)when I use vocabulary even slightly above the average joe. I’m sure Seth just observed that you’re intelligent and adept with english vocabulary. (If he didn’t know that already!)
OK, Wil, this is just too damned cool! Good on ya, mate!
One thing that I’ve always wondered – hooray for the Internet granting me the opportunity to “converse” with a person I admire (who just happens to be an actor/writer/comedian/poker player/you get my meaning) who I will likely never encounter in a “real world” social situation – about guest appearances/voice work/et al: Do you recieve a copy of the completed episode from the production company after it airs or do you “just” get your cheque in the mail?
My wife was a primary subject in a documentary series (filming while we met and fell in love, so I’m kind of in a few episodes, too) and we received a set of DVDs after the series aired and I was just wondering if that was standard or just something that this particular company did in this particular case.
Sounds great! But a year?!?
Come On Now.
Dude, RAWK! \mnnm/
My inference bump is tripping overtime on this post (quite different from my interference bump, which gets me into tons of trouble). You say it’s a tribute to ST:TNG, and that it will air in “about a year”. Taking into account this year’s tribute to Star Wars, and the fact that this is the time of year when shows come back from their Summer Hiatus, is it out of line to conclude that you will be in *next year’s* season premiere?
Regardless, to quote you, HAWESOME!
A YEAR?!
You should have kept it to yourself. 🙂
…
That will actually make me come out of my teevee hermitage. I generally only watch House, M.D. and Mythbusters. I’m also not a fan of Star Trek (please don’t kill me), but c’mon…TNG is fun!
I’m trying to think of a funny and clever way to work in the word “nerdgasm,” but I got nuthin’. 😉
OMG super excited about that!!! Is Seth McFarlane’s natural voice the “Brian” voice? That’s what he uses in most tv appearances, but I’ve always wondered. And how weird to hear that voice coming out of a real person, lol. Anyway, not so excited about it being a year away though… buzzkill. XD
I ususally try to post cerebrally, but fuck it.
TOO MUCH ROCK FOR ONE HAND!!!!!
\mm/
HAWESOME!
My favorite animated show and my favorite geek icon, together at last!
\mm/
Can’t wait to see it! But honestly, any Family Guy Ep is awesome!
Ditto to several other comments: “entirely too cool!”! and “a freakin’ year?!?!”
Well at least I know when I’ve forgotten (cause I can barely remember shit that’s gonna happen in my own life next week, let alone in yours next year!), you’ll will excitedly post us a reminder. You will do that, right? BEFORE it airs?
xo
A YEAR? Damned animation! On the plus side, that means that Family Guy will be on next season.
I heard that Stewie is a lot taller in person than he is on the show, is that true? 😉
Does Stewie push you down stairs???
About the year thing, it’s kinda funny that 800 hours of animation will go into your cartoon version, Wil! Hot animator chicks will be labouring of your image for weeks! How’s that for attention! (we’ll just assume they’re chicks, and hot.)
I hope you use a frame from that to replace your picture here!
WAT!?!? a YEAR?!?
I cant wait that LONG! 🙁
Dumb question, but did you know going into it that Seth MacFarlane is a huge Star Trek fan going into this? He had a cameo on Enterprise as “Ensign Rivers” for a couple of episodes. Blink and you’ll miss him, but I remember a scene where Trip yells at him.
wil
that rocks!!!
family guy is so excellent
MacFarlane is a genius
and i cant wait to see my favorite blogger/actor/author in an episode!!! how freaking sweet!!!
good o’ya
It always surprises me when you are surprised by others’ appreciation of your work. I wish you could quantify your luminosity! (Yeah, I said luminosity. I say stupid shit like that when I’m giddy and excited.)
It must have been a great time, but it totally sucks we have to wait a year to see it!
i’m glad you had a good time. i walked by you before you got validation and i was like “oh man i should say something” but i didn’t because i didn’t want to be that guy who is like “oh my gosh wil i love your writing”
if you stop by again, i’ll make sure to be ‘that guy’ and then feel bad about it.
A year?????
Dude. Ill forget by then. May I suggest a countdown ticker when you know the airdate? 😛
Cant wait to see it, barring I dont forget.
DUDE!!!! A year? Seriously? A whole YEAR?!?!?!?
Talk about a freakin’ tease…. 🙁
That is so awesome! And it’s good to know that the other original cast members will be on the show. There’s nothing worse than knowing that voices are faked. Even if it’s funny.
Totally rad!! 🙂
DUDE!!!! A year? Seriously? A whole YEAR?!?!?!?
Talk about a freakin’ tease…. 🙁
oh man, that’s a long wait! Definitely let us know so we can fire up the TiVos, etc. And congrats on the book coming out, BTW 🙂
The permalink says it all.
Giggity!
That is just so totally awesome!!!!
YEY!
Awesomepants.
That is all.
Tha’s frickin’ AWESOME, Wil. Can’t wait to see it. Congrats!
Wil Wheaton on Family Guy
Wil inhabits this strange world between Hollywood and geek life that is just too surreal to believe sometimes. And he writes it all in ways that the average geek can connect to, so you always feel like you’re going along for a ride that you’d never (ne…
Sounds fantastic, can’t wait until 1 year plus 6 months for it to get over the pond, just because sometimes us Britain’s are even more behind than we realise can you till us Wil what season it’s in?
A year? A year? An effing Year!?!?!?
OMG, talk about a teaser.
Ugh, and then, to add embarrassment to everything, I see that allikitty had almost the exact same thing to say as I did. Only, she said it first, so I am the embarrassed one…
Holy shiite wil, you are one lucky SOB and you so know it!
How many people can say they have fulfilled near as many, if any, lifelong dreams as you have?
This is just awesome my friend. I look forward to Laughing til I cry. 😉
Family Guy Rocks!!! But ONE YEAR?
That is a drag that it will take one year. I do love the idea of a pic of you animated and the count down counter.
It’s hard to remember that celebrities are people too (I know so trite). And that they are fans of other celebrities. I do believe I would have passed out from excitement had I met Seth McFarlane.
Congrats!
To quote almost every single person who’s commented in here…
A year?????
But we here in Australia will have to wait more than a year, I would assume… 🙁
Someone mentioned a countdown ticker. Go for it.
To everyone who’s screaming about the year’s lead time, as a professional animator myself I have to stand up and point out that we can only work the two days a week that we’re sober. We – as a group, a career-cum-vocation if you would – would love to work faster, but those bottles won’t empty themselves.
Cheers!
😉
I’m sure the year is due to the “oh, gosh the writers are going on strike in October and we need 18 months of shows in post by then” fear I understand is running around Hollywood now.
I just got through watching Volume 5, and it had some of the funniest stuff I’ve seen in a while. Now all we have to do is get you on Venture Brothers. Maybe as the Monarch’s long lost son?
Re: JessicaDwyer
Best. Idea. Ever.
Pleasepleaseplease ask AstrobaseGo! Will, because that would be spectacularly amazing.
Definitely good news.
I love that you did your best not to faint. You’re too much my dear..too much. 🙂
No worries Rikki. That kind of teasing needs to be addressed more than once. :-}
Dude, John de Lancie is like the smartest guy I’ve ever met.
Oh, and I’m definitely saving up for this as I have NO TNG DVDs. I know, it’s a crime. I wonder if they’ll still be charging us 30% more up here even though our dollars are now even. Methinks yes.

COLUMBIAS DEAN GETS IN MORE POLITICAL HOTWATER: As the…
I love Family Guy and I love(d) Star Trek TNG so this will be great….once it is aired here which will be in a year or two probably.
Just reading through the comments about Seth McFarlane playing an ensign who gets yelled at by Trip…
Trip won’t be doin’ no yellin’ at nobody any more since he never made it off the ship.
RIP Trip.
