a bit more about my episode of Family Guy

  • Television
  • WWdN in Exile

So recording Family Guy yesterday ranks in the top five most awesome moments of my acting and geek lives.

Seth MacFarlane directed my session, and when I met him, I said, "Okay, I’m not even going to try to pretend to keep it cool. I am a huge fan, and this is more exciting for me than I can quantify."

Yeah, I said quantify. I say stupid shit like that when I’m giddy and excited.

"Well, if you’re going to do that," he said, "then I’ll have to tell you that Next Generation is my favorite of all the Star Treks, and I’ve seen every episode about a thousand times. The First Duty is just great, man."

I did my best not to faint.

We had a meeting of the mutual admiration society for a few minutes, and then I went into the booth to record my lines. It was incredibly fun and creatively fulfilling, and even though we only worked together for fifteen or twenty minutes, I instantly liked him. He reminded me of my friends from ACME, and I hoped I earned another bit on the show at some point in the future, because he was really fun to work with.

When I was finished recording, I asked him if I could talk a little bit about my episode on my blog, without giving away too many details, and he said that would be fine, so . . .

I play myself, in a story that you could call a tribute to Next Generation. Pretty much everyone from the cast is on board for the episode, and holy shit is it funny.

I can’t divulge any specific story details, or give away any jokes, but there’s a joke with me that, if it makes it to the final cut of the episode, could quite possibly be the funniest thing I’ve ever done on television.

The show will air in about a year, I guess, and I can’t wait to see it.

Awwwww yeah, that’s going to be awesome from the sound of it. Family Guy isn’t my fave, but I definitely love the constant references to the era of those who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s (me among them). A tribute to TNG should be frickin’ hi-larious. Almost all from the cast is involved!? Awwwwwww man. Please keep us posted on when it will air, when it comes time.

Okay… I’ll set my TiVo for a year from now.
That actually sounds pretty awesome if they managed to get the whole Next Generation cast. And, from what little I know of MacFarlane’s work, I can expect several people will most likely die from laughing so damn hard if you all are having fun with yourselves and your characters. Could it be the Best Parody Ever?

Oh, and don’t worry about the giddy speak. I’m constantly getting looks from people (outside of work)when I use vocabulary even slightly above the average joe. I’m sure Seth just observed that you’re intelligent and adept with english vocabulary. (If he didn’t know that already!)

OK, Wil, this is just too damned cool! Good on ya, mate!
One thing that I’ve always wondered – hooray for the Internet granting me the opportunity to “converse” with a person I admire (who just happens to be an actor/writer/comedian/poker player/you get my meaning) who I will likely never encounter in a “real world” social situation – about guest appearances/voice work/et al: Do you recieve a copy of the completed episode from the production company after it airs or do you “just” get your cheque in the mail?
My wife was a primary subject in a documentary series (filming while we met and fell in love, so I’m kind of in a few episodes, too) and we received a set of DVDs after the series aired and I was just wondering if that was standard or just something that this particular company did in this particular case.

    Dude, RAWK! \mnnm/
My inference bump is tripping overtime on this post (quite different from my interference bump, which gets me into tons of trouble). You say it’s a tribute to ST:TNG, and that it will air in “about a year”. Taking into account this year’s tribute to Star Wars, and the fact that this is the time of year when shows come back from their Summer Hiatus, is it out of line to conclude that you will be in *next year’s* season premiere?
    Regardless, to quote you, HAWESOME!

    …
That will actually make me come out of my teevee hermitage. I generally only watch House, M.D. and Mythbusters. I’m also not a fan of Star Trek (please don’t kill me), but c’mon…TNG is fun!

OMG super excited about that!!! Is Seth McFarlane’s natural voice the “Brian” voice? That’s what he uses in most tv appearances, but I’ve always wondered. And how weird to hear that voice coming out of a real person, lol. Anyway, not so excited about it being a year away though… buzzkill. XD

Does Stewie push you down stairs???
About the year thing, it’s kinda funny that 800 hours of animation will go into your cartoon version, Wil! Hot animator chicks will be labouring of your image for weeks! How’s that for attention! (we’ll just assume they’re chicks, and hot.)
I hope you use a frame from that to replace your picture here!

Dumb question, but did you know going into it that Seth MacFarlane is a huge Star Trek fan going into this? He had a cameo on Enterprise as “Ensign Rivers” for a couple of episodes. Blink and you’ll miss him, but I remember a scene where Trip yells at him.

    Totally rad!! 🙂

That is a drag that it will take one year. I do love the idea of a pic of you animated and the count down counter.
It’s hard to remember that celebrities are people too (I know so trite). And that they are fans of other celebrities. I do believe I would have passed out from excitement had I met Seth McFarlane.
    Congrats!

To quote almost every single person who’s commented in here…
    A year?????
But we here in Australia will have to wait more than a year, I would assume… 🙁
Someone mentioned a countdown ticker. Go for it.

  41. Bog says:

To everyone who’s screaming about the year’s lead time, as a professional animator myself I have to stand up and point out that we can only work the two days a week that we’re sober. We – as a group, a career-cum-vocation if you would – would love to work faster, but those bottles won’t empty themselves.
    Cheers!
    😉

  42. Byron says:

I’m sure the year is due to the “oh, gosh the writers are going on strike in October and we need 18 months of shows in post by then” fear I understand is running around Hollywood now.
