50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

good news, great news, bad news

Posted on 19 October, 2007 By Wil

The good news is the hard covers were just dropped off.

The great news is that they look beautiful, feel great, and are exactly the way I wanted them to be.

The bad news is that I can’t sell them, because PayPal still hasn’t been able to hep me solve the item number problem when I try to ship multiple orders.

I feel helpless and frustrated, at a time when I should be celebrating.

Hopefully, I’ll find a way to resolve this before the end of the weekend.

    Wil,
I know you are interested in science. Here is a problem for you. In your first chapter of ‘Happiest Days,’ ” a Long Strange Trip”…you say you have been riding this planet for almost 20 billion miles. This is assuming that Pasadena has been traveling around the sun in a “straight” line. However due to the earth’s rotation on it’s axis, Pasadena has been traveling around the sun in a “pigtail” orbit. Assuming the earth’s diameter is about 8,000 miles and it circumference about 24,000 miles (pi x D)
hom many miles does this add to your life journey around the sun?
    Freeman 🙂

    Wil,
What about hacking PayPal via the price? E.g. charge different prices so each item’s price identifies which one someone bought.
So say price things this way
    Paperback (US): 19.99
    Paperback (Canada): 19.98
    Hardcover (US): 29.99
    Hardcover (Canada): 29.98
So its obvious if someone buys one of them, you just have to sort and print by price. buying two different items gets a bit trickier. You’d have to have some problem solving, or a premade chart that translates it into the actual number.
The key here is using the last two digits as your “product key” I’m sure there is some point where the quanties could intersect and you could have ambiguity, but it should be rare enough that it could be resolved via a quick email.
I haven’t worked out all the permutations, but if you’d like I can put a little bit of time into it…

    OK, for Los Angeles residents.
    Altogether now:

I noticed our Canadian orders are temporarily unavailable. I have an order that I put through from last week that is still clearing the US-Canada bank thing. Hoping it still gets shipped.
It’s a bummer that you can’t send out the hardcover. Damn PayPal 🙁

Wil, I hope once the paypal glitches are worked out you will be able to sell your hardcovers. I passed on the softcovers to get your autograph. If you are able to sell the hardcover to Canadians please let us know.
    Thanks much.

I havent read comments on the other posts about this problem. However, if you are having problems even getting Paypal to respond to you, try the Paypal phone number leak from The Consumerist site:

I fully support the lemonade stand idea. 🙂
In all seriousness, I’ve been holding out for the signed hardcover, but I completely understand the hassles aren’t your fault, and don’t mind waiting. The only thing I’m worried about is that they sell out before I get paid next. 😉

Argh, the dreaded PayPal issues! Keep us all posted for when these issues are resolved, as I would most certainly like to order a copy! You do ship to Canada, eh? 😉
