50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

186, and some other NUMB3RS

Posted on 21 November, 2007 By Wil

The good news is that I packed and labeled 186 books to be shipped. Of  those 186, about 30 are international orders that still need customs forms and postage, but the rest are ready to go. This brings us to the bad news, which is that I just finished now, an hour after the post office closed, the day before a holiday. So if you were in the first 186 and you’re in the US, your book will ship Friday morning. If you were in the first 186 and you’re somewhere other than the US, it will ship by Saturday. (According to my fuzzy math and hazy memory, the first 186 would be between noon and 2pm PST on Sunday, if you’re wondering.)

Ryan’s coming home for Thanksgiving, so I think I’ll have non-computer priorities until he goes back to school on Sunday, so this is a weekend farewell from me. Thanks for being part of an awesome (if short) week, and if you’re traveling in the next few days, I hope it’s as hassle-free and enjoyable as possible. Airborne is sugary crap; take Emergen-C. And wash your hands. A lot.

Oh! I keep forgetting to mention: I’m on NUMB3RS this Friday night. The episode is called "Graphic." I’ll have a post at TV Squad about working on the show sometime on Friday.

Most excellent episode. Great work Wil.
Once it’s been a few days, I look forward to the plot critique.

I loved the entrance! Sweet, arrogant strut, my man…
Of course, I don’t know that I will ever be able to hear the words, “I am the victim here!” without fighting the urge to burst into cackles.
I just wish they’d done the scene of Miles giving back the comic book — just to see a “humbled” douche.

Great job, Wil — not merely douche, but geek-who-lost-his-soul-when-he-sold-out-his-first-love douche. All them hyphens take some doin’!

It was great seeing you being a total dick onscreen. And the shot of you walking by the James Kirk stand up was an awesome shot. Priceless.
Can’t wait for the Family Guy with you in it 🙂

Way to go Wil – enjoyed the show as always but especially great with you in it. Hope you had a great holiday and a have a great weekend with your son.

I agree with all the commenters above Wil – you were a total dickwad in this episode but DAMN I loved it! You do “smarmy” very well! Great job!

w00t! Just watched Numb3rs and dang nabbit but you were slippery, slimy, and various other alliterative adjectives. Seriously… you played it so well, the guy who is out to make a buck but acts the role of the humanitarian at the end. Again I say, w00t!

    Wil,
No sign of the petulant teenager – you’ve grown up and I’m glad you’ve given us a chance to grow up with you.
    Well done. Very well done.

Wil, loved seeing you on Numb3rs tonight! We don’t get to see you often enough (despite the fact that you’re always around on \.).
I’ve always liked the concept behind Numb3rs – As a geek, I think it’s about time math got a better rep. While I sometimes think their stories overreach themselves, it’s nice to see math put to “real” use, not just figuring out when a train arrives in New York if it left LA at 6:30pm etc. etc…

  12. Dave says:
    23 November, 2007 at 8:43 pm

I’m thinking my favorite part of your performance is the interrogation room scene. They lit you very well and the dialogue was spot on.
Also, I dug the suit, I kept waiting for you to ask Miss Johnson to bring you some more chair fuel 😉

  13. JT-Gigcast says:

    Hey!
    Great job on Numb3rs!

  14. inspectre27 says:

Wil, you do excellent douche. My girlfriend – who is not geeky at all, but very patient and understanding – watched the show with me. Her comment: “why is he so mean?”
Also, happy to see that there are Austinites reading this site. Maybe we should have a meet-n-greet sometime. Think we could get Wil to visit?

  15. Wil says:
    23 November, 2007 at 9:06 pm

YES! I did the Picard Maneuver entirely on purpose, as an easter egg for the people who would know what it was.
I am so psyched that you caught that!
(The show still hasn’t aired here, so don’t spoil it for me. Har. Har. Har.)

  16. angie k says:

inspectre27 WWDN Austin Monkeys Meet Up? Hmmm… Fascinating. I’d come.
    Picard Maneuver FTW.
Well done, sir. Yes, for a writer you’re still a pretty good actor.

  17. Soiled Dove says:
    23 November, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Happy Belated Turkey Day and excellent douchebaggery!
Very impressive, but it’s all been said far better.

  18. FRANKL says:
    23 November, 2007 at 9:10 pm

    Wow!
Seeing Wil’s character (Miles Sklar?) with his entourage/bodyguards blow by the cutout of William “Fucking” Shatner and then push aside a dressed-up Romulan in the beginning of the show was sweet! An homage to Wil’s Trekkie life, me thinks. Anyways, Wil was awesome!
I have been re-living memories as I read Wil’s blog of my old D&D days. What brought me totally back to my old school stuff (and I mean REALLY old) was the mention of the “Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers”. This reference created a backwash into my memory the character I leveled through out my old D&D career – Freewheelin’ Franklin (Freewheelin’ for short) – my level 18 Fighter.
This flagging of my memory in itself made this episode awesome. Wil’s appearance was just a bonus.
(Side Note: I’ve been watching the FX “Malcolm In The Middle” marathon today, and when I saw Christopher Lloyd on NUMB3ERS as the old-school comic artist (Ross Moore), I couldn’t help but envision his face doing the ‘goofy-face” he did in the “Malcolm” episode of Hal’s family reunion. I was giggling.)
(*SIGH* I forget that we in the Mountain Time Zone see the network shows later than most people. It sucks that my thoughts are late in the thread (not your fault, all.))

  19. angie k says:
    23 November, 2007 at 9:35 pm

P.S. Wil, I do have to say… as Miles you were quite (dare I say it?!)… edgy. Heh!
And the other comment that was repeated throughout the viewing room here was that Miles was quite a… captain of enterprise. *ducks, covers*
    Cheers!

  20. Gilder says:
    23 November, 2007 at 10:26 pm

    Hi, Wil,
I know…long time no type. Sorry about that.
Pleasant surprise to see you on “Numb3rs” tonight. As a con-runner and attendee, thought it was an interesting setting. However, I felt cheated because, IMHO, your character would have made a more interesting antagonist.
    All the best,
    Gilder in San Antonio

  21. SandyB says:
    23 November, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Great episode Wil! And you got to open the show with William F#$%&ng Shatner! (Someone said it was a cardboard cut-out, but I find it hard to tell the difference.) I guess the moral of the story is, you never know what treasures are waiting to be discovered at garage sales. Or, that slimy douchebags go to garage sales.
Well played, young Wheaton, well played.

  22. WaywardSailorGirl says:

So awesome that Ryan’s home for Thanksgiving AND your episode of Numb3rs is on at the same time. I hope you were all able to sit and watch it as a family…
You did a great job of playing an arrogant sleezebag, by the way…Go Wil!

  23. Tara says:
    23 November, 2007 at 10:59 pm

Great job on Numb3rs Wil! I think with your experience of what kind of person ruins the convection/geek world made it easy for you to portray that guy. I’m a huge fan of the show and the episode was great all the way around. I’m glad you were part of it:) Also the exchange between Judd Hirsch and Christopher Lloyd one of the funniest exchanges on the show ever (I know it has nothing to do with you, but it made me laugh.)
    ~~TARA~~

  24. Carlos says:

Saw you on Numb3rs. Talk about playing against type! Wow!!
But it was great job – definitely someone we all know and loathe, and that’s not easy. 🙂

    BUYING ADVICE:
Wil, you might not see this way down here, but Columbia Sportswear definitely makes the best waterproof parkas for a New England winter. I would advise the Black Butte parka, or a similar design. They are really warm and great in terms of being waterproof. It costs $250 (http://www.paragonsports.com/Paragon/Shop?DSP=40000&PCR=1:100:1000:10014:100123:1000718&IID=5004-SM7619&brandspage=Columbia%20Sportswear&brand=Columbia%20Sportswear&E1SRC=CS&E1PRM=5004-SM7619) but you may be able to do better on ebay. Are you coming to New England? For a speaking engagement, maybe? Let us know- we don’t get to see you too often up here in the cold.

  28. Merbrat says:
    23 November, 2007 at 11:48 pm

The show was great! Miles was a Mint-Condition A$$!
The Trek Drek was fun to try and spot. They did a great job outfitting that Con!
inspectre27: I tried to get an Austin gathering to watch the show tonight…
but I was the only one still in town!
Wil’s already mentioned the THDoOL Tour is coming to Austin (probably BookPeople) we can do something for that.

  29. Jaded Empath says:
    24 November, 2007 at 4:14 am

FRANKL: your comments are NEVER too late – you’re just less likely to asshat-erize yourself by giving away plot twists. *blush*
And thanks Wil, it was a supporting role, but it made the episode all the richer for it (Miles was the reason our ‘culprit’ committed the crime)
Hope you’re having a great family weekend, and give Ryan a hug from me! 🙂

  30. sas says:

Hope to see you again soon.

Your ep was a pleasure to watch.
As for coats, if you are coming out here now, it’s not *that* cold (ya CA wuss)…but other onlines to consider are landsend.com and llbean.com–llbean being very good about returns and an awesome store to visit if you make it to Maine.

  32. Mad Monk says:
    24 November, 2007 at 6:25 am

Man, if that were me in that opening scene, I would watch that over and over again. COOLNESS! Man you had that part down.
While that was cool, I noticed during the interrogation scene, the way you squinted at the cop – that’s when I believed in you as the character. I think it was the word “money” and you squinted.
    Well done.

  33. Mad Monk says:
    24 November, 2007 at 6:26 am

PS – My soft cover copy of the book arrived on Friday – any other Canadians get their book yet?
Looks great. The designers even make the book look and feel ‘old’.

  34. Celtic Mama says:
    24 November, 2007 at 7:12 am

Wil, it’s scary how well you play douchebag! Like everyone else said, the opening sequence was worth the price of admission. And thanks for the Picard maneuver! That was a great Thanksgiving gift to us.

  35. love2all says:
    24 November, 2007 at 8:38 am

I caught you on the show last night… damn, you DO play a really good asshole douche! That’s a compliment, of course, because that’s definitely not you in real life.
And to think I almost missed the beginning. My husband was whining because he wanted to watch Rachael Ray on the Food Network and I’m like, “Turn it back NOW! Drool over Rachael another day.” He kept saying, “Wil won’t be on in the beginning, they never have guest stars on in the beginning.” Good thing I commandeered the remote control at that point.
And I DID catch the Picard manuever! I wasn’t sure if it was on purpose or not because I was like, “Did he just…? I think he DID!”
It was an excellent episode too, I think I got my husband hooked on the show too. *High five*

  36. love2all says:
    24 November, 2007 at 8:51 am

Oh, I meant to add that if anyone missed the episode or the “maneuver”, go to CBS.com and you can see the whole episode from there. 🙂

  37. Kim Wilson says:
    24 November, 2007 at 8:56 am

This geeky Canadian girl screeched like a school girl when you did the Picard manuever. My math loving children love the show and the added bonus for my 12 yr old son of seeing “wesley crusher” in something other than TNG made his day!
    Well done Wil!
ps..Mad Monk…I got my soft copy a few weeks ago, that loud yell heard across Canada was me skipping through the house singing “it’s here! it’s here!”

  38. vincentsmommy says:
    24 November, 2007 at 9:05 am

Wil, we caught the show, last night, at my in-laws’ house on their big screen! It’s kind of funny that they watch “Numb3rs” and love it, and we’ve never really seen it before (and we’re the geeks!). I had to explain my reasons for watching it, and my father-in-law was great about making sure all the grandchildren stayed relatively quiet so I could pay attention and hear what was going on. You did a great job! The only problem I had with the show was that you weren’t in it enough. Oh, well. It was nice to see you acting on the small screen, again. Looking forward to the “Family Guy” episode! And, hope you had a great Thanksgiving with your family.

  39. Hotmamacudd says:
    24 November, 2007 at 9:13 am

    Now when’s Family Guy comming?

    Kudos, Wil! I enjoyed that!

Wil, holy crap. I’ve been SO lazy reading blogs, but I just sat down t o watch one of my favorite shows, numb3rs and there you are.
Two of my favorite actors (you and David Krumholtz) in one show is… My god.
I’m so excited! You look so beautiful!!!!

Hey Wil, nice shout out on the 11/23 episode of The Soup. It’s great that Joel said what I was thinking as I watched your bird-calling Doppelgänger…

  44. Wil says:
    24 November, 2007 at 11:43 am

Jen#28: Really? Joel and I are ACME alumni, and we’ve done a few shows together. I don’t know him well enough to call him my friend, but I like him a whole bunch.
TiVo missed The Soup. What was the context? Does anyone have a link to it?

  45. Jonah Rapp says:
    24 November, 2007 at 11:57 am

One more comment on NUMB3RS… I’m a little surprised and a little embarrassed that I seem to be the only one on here who caught the name of the Ultra World artist — Ross Moore.
Alex Ross? Alan Moore? Terry Moore? *rubs chin thoughtfully*
I’ve watched it four times now. And somehow your performance gets better each time, Wil. 😉

  46. jen#28 says:
    24 November, 2007 at 12:56 pm

    The Soup will re-air a few times. It’s on tonight @ 11:30; tomorrow @ 2:30 a.m, 10:30 a.m., etc.
There was a kid doing bird calls on The Today Show that was your spitting image c. 1986. At least I thought so (maybe because I’d just finished watching the TiVoed NUMB3RS episode).
But then Joel said something about “Hey, young Wil Wheaton!” The whole episode is super funny, though. They were firing on all pistons this week.

  47. Dave says:
    24 November, 2007 at 1:12 pm

Jen#38, I just set EyeTV to record the 11:30 showing of The Soup. I’ll post a link to the segment you mentioned tomorrow morning.

  48. Dave says:
    24 November, 2007 at 1:13 pm

Correction, I meant Jen#28 unless you have an evil twin lurking the net as well 😉

  49. gordie says:
    24 November, 2007 at 3:45 pm

Wil- I hope my bringing up old work isn’t so annoying for you. I’m a relatively new fan. But I just wanted to let you know that I just listened to episode 9 of Radio Free Burrito, and I loved the lounge stuff. I’m definitely going to try to track down as much of it as I can get my hands on. Great work, and I strongly encourage you to make another lounge episode when “the inspiration hits you.”

  50. Starr01 says:
