50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

186, and some other NUMB3RS

Posted on 21 November, 2007 By Wil

The good news is that I packed and labeled 186 books to be shipped. Of  those 186, about 30 are international orders that still need customs forms and postage, but the rest are ready to go. This brings us to the bad news, which is that I just finished now, an hour after the post office closed, the day before a holiday. So if you were in the first 186 and you’re in the US, your book will ship Friday morning. If you were in the first 186 and you’re somewhere other than the US, it will ship by Saturday. (According to my fuzzy math and hazy memory, the first 186 would be between noon and 2pm PST on Sunday, if you’re wondering.)

Ryan’s coming home for Thanksgiving, so I think I’ll have non-computer priorities until he goes back to school on Sunday, so this is a weekend farewell from me. Thanks for being part of an awesome (if short) week, and if you’re traveling in the next few days, I hope it’s as hassle-free and enjoyable as possible. Airborne is sugary crap; take Emergen-C. And wash your hands. A lot.

Oh! I keep forgetting to mention: I’m on NUMB3RS this Friday night. The episode is called "Graphic." I’ll have a post at TV Squad about working on the show sometime on Friday.

I just watched it online too. You were a fantastic smarmy jerk. You KNOW that having you walk past WFS was no accident.

Hey Wil, was so happy to see you acting on TV again. Am a regular numb3rs watcher (well, downloader. I live in the UK so have to wait foooooooooorever for shows to hit here) so was doubly excited for this episode. Hope its the start of some more cool acting gigs coming your way, though as I really enjoyed both ‘just a geek’ and ‘dancing barefoot’ hope it doesn’t interfere with your writing that much! Random question, but with you now starting to experiment with fiction and comics, are you ever tempted to maybe write something that moves wesley’s story forwards? I mean, I know it something that you have come to peace with, but growing up he was the chracter that I identified most with on that show. Don’t want to geek out too much, but your portrayal (yes my spelling sucks) of that character made me feel so much more comfortable in my own skin when I was a kid, that I’d really like to see where you would have taken his story?
Sorry, don’t mean to geek out too much here, but I think my happiness in the person that I am (massive comic book geek, who grew up to be an archaeologist) stems a great deal from my identifying with that character on the show.
And I just wanted to say thanks.
    Anyways, long rambling post over.
Really enjoyed the episode, and thanks again man.

Your item was processed and left our CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA 91715 facility on November 24, 2007. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.
I am hoping it is waiting for me when I get home.
Great job on numb3rs. I kept thinking, “Wil always says don’t be a dick!” but plays one well. Well done.
Have you played Super Mario Galaxy yet? I am just starting it. Once I got used to the initial vertigo, I love it.

I’ve read your blog for awhile now, and I’m two for three books in (THDoOL sits on the fiancee’s nightstand right now). We both watched Numb3ers and agreed there was too little of you in it — but you were a treat to watch. Great job!

I’ve never seen Numb3rs before and I totally stumbled on it last night, but I’m glad I did. Nicely done dick, Wil. And I absolutely adored all the Star Trek shout-outs. Yea Picard maneuver!
I do have a request of folks, though. If you support the writers’ strike, please don’t watch the episode online. The writers don’t get a penny from online streaming and downloading, which is a big reason why they’re striking. I know y’all want to check out Wil’s awesome dickiness, which is understandable, but please don’t undermine the writers efforts.

  7. ProudTexasWoman says:
    24 November, 2007 at 9:34 pm

Carol, thanks for the tip. It’s sad that it’s set up that way; even though naturally the revenue stream is different for the online venue, we still want writers to get their cut so they can keep writing and we can keep enjoying (and in a few cases, being inspired to join their ranks). I was going to go back and watch — I read Wil’s post just *that* much too late after the show aired on Friday — but now I’ll hold off … and hold off as well on watching my back episodes of “Heroes” and “Pushing Daisies,” both of which I miss due to my nighttime teaching commitments.
Here’s hoping Ryan and Co. are thoroughly enjoying being reunited for the weekend and milking that for all its worth. That’s certainly worth having to wait for our next WWdN installment!

Yay! Just turned on Tivo to watch NUMB3RS, and squee-ed like a fangirl when I saw you — you play a great jagoff!
And kudos for slipping in the Picard maneuver — that was cool.

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving with your family. Sorry I missed NUMB3RS, but hey – I justed watched Stand By Me with my wife. I hadn’t seen it since it played in the theaters, and she had never seen it. You were a great actor then, and from all these comments, it sounds like you’ve gotten even better. Congrats.

  10. Andrew says:
    25 November, 2007 at 12:18 am

With all due respect to Carol, I don’t think anyone involved with TV shows would prefer that you skip their shows entirely rather than catch them on the Internet flip side. (Especially if you’re not a Nielsen reporter.) I hold the — perhaps naive — view that the writers, actors, directors, and crew create the shows for the entertainment of the audience, and they would take the view that missing out on the shows entirely defeats the purpose of making them in the first place.

  11. cryssyer says:
    25 November, 2007 at 6:42 am

Hope you had a great holiday with the family, Wil. I am furious at myself for missing the Numb3rs episode, though! I am sick, sick, sick, and was in a feverish sleep on Friday night. Sigh. Guess I’ll have to wait for the re-run. Sad to say that I didn’t even have DVR service until my new FiOS installation on Saturday, so I couldn’t set it up to tape. Argh.

  12. Byron says:
    25 November, 2007 at 9:36 am

I’m watching the episode from iTunes, and it was a good one. I’m incredibly lame, though, and am just not seeing the Picard maneuver.
Ah, well. I’m lame like that anyway.

  13. Leroy says:
    25 November, 2007 at 10:18 am

Awww, suck-O! I missed the 300-special eh? Well, that’ll teach me for not checking in on your site more often. 😉 Eh, I’m sure I’ll get a copy of your book one way or another. ANd it’s too bad that I live in Europe right now, or I’d be watching you on NUMB3RS, too. I’m sure I’l catch it on the DVD release or try to catch it online, somehow.
Congrats on the book and NUMB3RS!

  14. CrimsonSanX says:
    25 November, 2007 at 1:09 pm

I missed the ep when it originally aired here and we don’t have TiVo here but I did catch it online. I wish I didn’t have to but in the end I buckled. Though in the end it’s probably better to watch it online through Innertube than to download the HDTV torrent that’s almost certainly illegal.
As for the writer’s strike, I understand your point Carol but there’s support then there’s going overboard… There’s a nice medium to be found somewhere in there and breaking it to watch ONE episode of a show I don’t believe will kill the writer’s efforts. Particularly if you end up picketing with them/donating money as well.

  15. KevinH_aru says:
    25 November, 2007 at 2:22 pm

I just watched Numb3ers on tape — great job, Wil. I really enjoyed your performance. The only thing missing from that episode was *more Wil.*
Were there any off-camera “Taxi” hijinks from Christopher Lloyd and Judd Hirsch?
(Yes, kids, I go back that far.)

  16. Bexicle says:
    25 November, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Good grief I wish I lived over there sometimes. We get allt he good US TV about 2 years later!
My paperback edition of THDoOL arrived Friday morning – which was a lovely way to end a very trying week. I’m hoping it will go someway to keeping me sane for the next week!
    Thanks 🙂

For those who want to support the writer’s strike by not watching online and who have Comcast Digital cable, the Numb3rs episode is now available on On Demand under the Network shows category. I watched it there myself since my stupid DVR cut off the first 30 seconds of the show, even though it was set to start recording a minute early (grr…).
You know, I must just be a thickie (as the British say) because I can’t spot the Picard Maneuver either. When is it – right before he sits down to be interrogated?

Saw it. Loved it. Yes, you were as deliciously nasty as promised. Damn, your character was a prick!! Lol. But you were wonderful. I got excited. “That’s Wil!!! Hey, look! That’s Wil!” I got some funny looks from the folks I was watching with. It was a good episode. Great job, Wil.

My roommate and I enjoyed the show and your part a lot! She says (and I agree) that you make an excellent dick 🙂 She also wishes to know who on the Numb3rs production team is a comic and or Trek fan? We loved the tone of the show toward fans 🙂

Wil you were excellent on the show! My husband and I were on vacation and made sure to find a tv in time to see the show. He is a Wil fan by proxy through me. And even he thought you played an excellent bad guy. Is it wrong that we enjoyed yelling out “Its Wil!” like little fankids everytime you came on the tv? Kudos for a most excellent Numb3rs episode. We are regular watchers of the show and this was one of the best this season.

  21. kinikia07 says:

Hey Wil. Yes, I watched Numb3rs and I did the fangirl squee. When you walked past cardboard-Shatner, I just thought it looked cool, so I did another squee. Of course, when you did the Picard maneuver, I just had to back up and show my husband what I saw. Yes, I backed up on that one just a few times. Yes, I have it taped and plan on watching it again. You rocked! You know there are times that shows begin to loose my interest and this show is one, but then you were in it and you made it so worth watching. Thanks you made my Thanksgiving holiday weekend!

    Wil,
I just want to say that thanks to you I had a total geek holiday weekend. First, Numb3rs on Friday. Great job. My only complaint is that you needed more scenes. Second, Toy Soldiers was on The Movie Channel on Saturday. Every time I watch it, I cry when Joey dies. I know, I’m a huge geek. Anyway, great job!

I finally saw Numb3rs last night. Wil, you really do play a great douche!! It would be great to see you on TV some more! However, with numb3rs I gotta say I thought your character and the fact that it was set in a kinda Comic Con was with best part of the show. The plot was predicable, most of the acting was flat and there just didn’t seem to be any of the charm or wit that makes some of the other detective shows enjoyable. But I’m happy that you were in it and I hope it leads to other roles and more success for you as an actor to go along with your present writing successes. Congrats and good luck!!!

i rarely watch NUMB3RS, even though when i do, it’s quite enjoyable.
so, it’s thanksgiving, and i’m at my parents house. we’re sitting around, switching between a really bad movie (the fantastic 4’s silver surfer movie) and a really good episode of a sometimes bad show (enterprise) . . . and my mom says OH! it’s time for NUMB3RS. i’m neither excited nor appalled, so we change the channel. the ‘con’ scene starts, and a little ::squee:: comes out of the corner i’m sitting in.
    “mom, look! it’s wil wheaton!”
i’m so glad i have awesome parents, or that could have been an embarrassing moment trying to explain my excitement. (certain books are on my hannukah-or-birthday-or-anytime list.) either way, i really enjoyed the episode. will there be more TV appearances in store once the writer’s strike is over?

You were great in Numb3rs. You were the ultimate, fabulous polyester suit wearing, greasy, oily douchebag. I didn’t realize how tall you are. I loved the Shatner cardboard cutout. Congratulations, I’m sure we’ll be seeing you in more stuff. Lorraine

The description of you by the doer made me exclaim, “Hey! Wil’s going to play Todd McFarland!” I don’t really know anything about TM outside of what I have read about the Spawn debacle, but your character was exactly how I pictured Todd’s behavior. Fun stuff!

Woot! Numb3rs was awesome; definitely one of my favorite eps. You weren’t kidding about the awesomeness of the convention set! I loved the extras, too… my favorite was probably fake!Picard on his cellphone. 😛 You were terrifically arrogant and asshole-y. 😀

I used to think I was observant. It’s taken me *forever* to see the Picard maneuver (between 1:10 and 1:15 on the iTunes copy, right after the comic is placed on the pedestal).
You should have in the interrogation room as well, Wil, because your jacket was seriously bunching up.
Nonetheless, I bow to the superior observation skills of this group!
