50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Come sit with me at the Child’s Play charity dinner!

  • WWdN in Exile

I’m going up to Seattle in a couple weeks for the Child’s Play dinner and auction, so I asked my friends at Penny Arcade if I could do something to contribute, other than my ticket and whatever I decide to buy in the auction.

"How about two seats at your table?"

Normally, this sort of thing never ends well for me, but that’s because it often comes at the end of a long day at a Star Trek convention, and rather than hanging out with people, I really need to be recharging all by myself.

But this is different. I liked everyone I met at PAX, and had so much fun there, I thought that this was actually a great idea.

So if you are going to the Child’s Play dinner, want to support the charity, and want to see what it’s like to sit with me, Robert Khoo, and some awesome Penny Arcade people while we shove food in our faces, check out the auction and place your bid.

But do it soon, because the auction ends tomorrow night.

The auction price is already over a thousand dollars… that’s fantastic but a bit out of my range, however, I’m always up for some late night bowling and Sunset Bowl is open 24/7/364.75
    Wanna bowl?

Oh, man. If I had a) time and b) $150.00+ (the + is a must, of course, to support the auction 🙂 ), I would so be there. 🙂 Share a table at a worthwhile function with the person whose books inspired me to start writing again? How could I say no? Enjoy yourself, Wil!

Man, I’m in Texas..Shoot!! Would love to see ya, and Wished I had the funds to support that charity!
    Have a great nite!!!

Wow. The fact it is in Seattle had me jumping to make a bid! (short trip from Vancouver Island…) But it unfortunately is also out of my price range already.
Good for you! I hope the auction brings in some major bucks for Child’s Play – they are a great charity…

It’s strangely coincidental that this opportunity would arise shortly after I was considering to what lengths I would go to meet Uncle Willie (basically anywhere I could drive and afford to do so, both financially and time-wise), so I was really excited – until I saw the current bid 🙁 Oh, well, maybe next time… – g^2
Let’s Go Bowling! I would definitely drive the 750+ miles to go bowling with Wil, even if I had to use an alley ball and wear the funky shoes of a thousand others.

Totally changing the subject but wanting to check in to report delivery today of my copy of THDOOL – #296! I can’t wait to read it – I’m going to try to not ‘do you’ all at once (nudge, nudge, wink of the eye). On yet another subject (yes, I changed majors in college, too), I was ditzing around in youtube & ran across the Weakest Link videos with the Star Trek gang – loved the hair – was that a perm? Is there anything youtube can’t do?
    Thrilled with my book,

What’s the best way for us to donate to Child’s Play? If you have a bit of time, maybe you can set up a fund so that on the night of the dinner you can present a contribution from your readers. Just a thought.

I’m from Seattle. You **must** visit Archie McPhee’s! It’s ”weird stuff” shop in the Ballard neighborhood (a quick taxi ride from both downtown and the Seattle Center). Some good geek stuff, plus glow-in-the-dark cockroaches and other stuff, including unusual “surplus” things.
They have a web presence, so you can Google ’em if you like.

I sooo wish I could be sitting at that table with you. And, not bragging or anything, but my husband and I could most likely afford the tickets, if they didn’t go up any higher. However, we’ll just be getting back from a week long conference trip in Las Vegas the Sunday before the auction, and I’m sure enough money will be spent there to make a second trip west un-affordable (is that even a word?). I do like the idea someone had of maybe setting up a contribution fund through you/your website. Is that possible?

Unfortunately I don’t get to Seattle from the opposite corner of the country until 8 days later.
Seriously, Wil – how about creating an account on PayPal with one of those click-to-donate buttons? Many of your readers would be glad to donate something, and any geek worth his salt can tell you that something*(probability of a reader donating)*N = Large Something when N is the number of readers you have for WWdN:IX

With a little over 11 hours to go, it’s steady at $1,035, which is pretty much freakin’ sweet. The money is for a great cause, too.
Seattle Monkeys! Get off your duffs and bid! If I weren’t a continent away, I’d be all about selling off my stuff for these tickets. Make up for my lack of participation and give to a worthy charity…

  12. angelkirie says:
    2 December, 2007 at 12:47 pm

It’s up to $1035 atm, if I could even fathom having that much money to spare at one time, I’d totally spend it on this, but alas! Either way, I second the bowling movement!

  13. ChaosInOrder says:
    2 December, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Shortly after I made the bowling suggestion I got to thinking about what Wil’s day would be like on the 11th…morning trip to the airport, 2-3 hour flight, dinner and auction that evening…..and I realized that finishing that day off with late night bowling would probably not happen. Let’s not minimize the great thing Wil is doing already by asking him to invite exhaustion on top of it 🙂

The auction’s a bit high for me as well. However, I love the idea of this charity. Thanks for mentioning it…and just in time for a 2007 tax deduction, too! Hehe.

ChaosInOrder, you are quite right in respecting Wil’s time, and I didn’t really expect it would happen, but it would still be HAWESOME!!!1! As would a click-to-donate opportunity. – g^2
FYI – Contributions can be made directly to a hospital near you from the Child’s Play homepage.

Sorry to abscond with the thread, but Twitter just announced:

If I were to plan some sort of WWdN meet-up in Los Angeles, maybe at ACME where I’d do a reading with drinks after, would you come?

That’s only 550 miles, so YES! BTW, where was this posted, since that’s probably where this response1 should be… And congrats on the greening of your lawn; I always found tranquility with the push-mower. – g^2
    1. I’m hoping a fellow WWdNer will point the way, since this is a pretty stupid thing to actually ask Wil about.
HRM – superscripting doesn’t seem to work here, but I’m quite happy with what I’ve tried so far.

If I could get the time away from my kids I would jump into the fray in a second. Although I would probably scar you too much when my 14 year old self emerges and turns into a “fan-girl”.
Hope they raise a TON of money!!!!!

    Unrelated to this post…
DUDE! You just got namechecked by Warren Ellis!!!!1! In his latest group email, he says that his new article is up on Suicide Girls, and then says, “Wil’s still writing there regularly, too.”

Wil, speaking of meeting people at PAX, I meant to tell you about this right after PAX: you got name dropped in a comic about PAX. Check it: http://www.nodecomic.com/modules/comicizer/archive.php?comicID=22

I mentioned this to my husband (a big PA fan, and moderate WW fan as well), and his response was, “I would actually pay $1000 for you to be able to do that.” What a cool guy! Of course, it would have been another $1000 once plane fare and hotel for both of us is figured in, plus it’s on a Tuesday, which would realistically mean 3 days off work… but hey, if we lived in Seattle instead of Upstate NY, we’d have totally been there. 😉 Hope Wil and the winners have a great time supporting this worthy cause!

Way to go Wil. What a great means of raising some money for a worthy cause.
Shame I have no desire to go to Seattle.
But you should TOTALLY come to Vegas this weekend for the Poker Blogger gathering. No doubt Pauly, Otis, Iggy, Change, and the tons of old schoolers coming out would be happy to see you. Wil AND Johnny Hughes in the tourney would be too much for most to bear.

I know if I was sitting at a table with Wil what I would want to do was pull the dice and books out, but heck with what I make even deployed and the fact that I am about 7000 miles away right now sorta means I could not have done this even if I really wanted to (which I do!).

    Hi Wil,
Got the book today! Looking forward to reading it now that I’m back from travel.
We were at Griffith on Thursday and the Getty on Friday (even though it was raining on Friday, the Getty is SO worth it, even with the view obscured). Now, the next place we visit the next time we come out is the Huntington!
    Cheers and keep lookin’ up!

    Greetings all,
I have some great news for you. Turns out that the idiot, who shall remain nameless, that won the bidding neglected to check with his SO. Turns out that there is a commitment that shall not be missed.
His loss is your gain. I would expect an announcement from Child’s Play, shortly, that the tickets are available once again.
Don’t worry, Child’s Play didn’t get shafted, they have been asked to accept the winning bid as a contribution.
PS. I post this here, as several emails about the matter have gone un-answered. I would hate for these to go to waste due to some bureaucratic blunder.

Sadly, the price is already too rich for my blood (it being red instead of blue). Besides, I will be volunteering for a differently awesome organization that evening: 826 Seattle. This is a thoroughly excellent org that helps kids learn to express themselves through writing–for free!
