50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

magic hour

  • WWdN in Exile

The sky was on fire when I ran inside to get the camera. By the time I got back out to take some pictures, it had cooled to this beautiful pink. I love the way the palm tree is silhouetted against the sky.

What you can’t see, but I can hopefully describe now, is how the entire sky cast a soft pink glow down on the entire world from the mountains, to our house, to the street in front of it.

Hrm. It’s not the same, but if you were lucky, maybe you got to see something like it with your own eyes tonight.

(Click the image to go to Flickr where you can embiggen and see a couple other shots I took.)

    Oh wow. That *is* beautiful!

I love that shade of sky. Just beautiful.
By the way, my husband and I have been watching you on “what I learned from the movies” and giggling. Re: Bring it on, “There is no I in team but there is T & A” LOL

You know, that’s a whole lot prettier than the dreary, soggy I-think-the-sun-went-down-but-I’m-not-certain evening we’ve had here in Missouri.

Beautiful!! You could print and frame that shot.

Absolutely stunning. Have you ever thought about making a book of your photos? You have a lot, some really funny and interesting ones too.

I’m here in SoCal too, so I saw it, but didn’t have my camera with me 🙁 Thanks for capturing the moment.

Alas, here in Wisconsin, we didn’t have a sunset so much as the sky became more of a dark grey, and the flurries got harder to see.
Stupid winter. How I miss the lovely LA sunshine. Seven months since my visit out CA way and I already wanna go back.

Northern New York is much like Wisconsin in the winter. Every day is just another shade of grey with intermittent shades of white on a blacktop background. Really depressing at times. And for that reason, it’s great to see this! Thanks for sharing.

I’m currently in Tucson visiting family over the holidaze, and yesterday at sunset the mountains were the definition of “purple mountain’s majesty”. Quite similar to your beautiful photo. Stunning.

It’s PERFECT! We had a Red-Orange-Coral sunset that washed everything outside with color. Just beautiful!

I also had something similar happen on a CLEAR day at dusk. The air was clean with no clouds and the sky was the bluest it has ever been. I watched between the sky above me and the horizon where the sun had set about ½ hour before. It was at that time that I seen a particular shade of blue that just “VIBRATED” and it was phenomenal. I don’t know if anyone else had ever seen that shade of blue.

(Then again… I just might be highly imaginative.)

    Oh…BTW…
In case I forget to say it…
    HAVE A GREAT 2008!!

WOW! I live in San Diego and enjoyed that same sunset tonight. I’m glad you captured the moment on film. Speaking of capturing moments…I need to send you a pic of when I met you at Comic Con ’07. (A moment 15 years in the making) Great one of you, and me over the moon posing with you.

Every now and then in LA there is that flaming sky thing going on. I don’t see it in Chicago very much (or at all), and I kind of miss it.

Last month we were out at Griffith Observatory for a meeting and when we came out in late afternoon we caught a sunset very much like that one… there were a few clouds on the horizon to the west and it was magical… took lots of pix from up there on the mountain.

On fire? It was red before? Gotta be faster with that camera Mr. Wheaton! Tsk tsk! 😉 Thanks for the picture.

Completely unrelated- but an FYI- you were on TV in Chicago at 6:15 p.m. Part of some Star Trek/real science thing on the History channel.
How cool is that. The History channel!

Beautiful picture, I think I was too busy cleaning to notice the sky, rats!

Those are my favorite mornings. I will leave for work and call my husband to tell him the world is “pink” right now! Love those mornings!

That is very pretty. Do you read the Star Trek novels? I am wondering what you think of the “recent” death of Admiral Janeway.

I like your photo… not a lot of that in Canada right now… just cold…
Ummm… unrelated, but I think someone here can help. I picked up Rock Band, Guitar Hero II and the 80s one yesterday, plus a knockoff guitar called Guitar Mania (can’t find the proper ones anywhere) despite saying it is compatible with all games Rock Band refuses to even acknowledge its existence and the other two know it’s there, but the first three fret buttons don’t work… is it me? or is this thing just dinked?

That’s a wonderful photo there. The palm trees in focus of the sky are great.
Just seen you on a UK programme about the top 80s movies too.

Bee-u-tee-ful! Although it was a sunny day in this part of Canada, the sunset this evening was still cold, grey and blue… brrrr!!
Thank you for sharing the warmth – Happy New Year!

Yay! My copy of HDoOL arrived in the mail today. Number 120/300.
I was starting to get worried it had gone missing in transit and would have to call out the Mounties to search for it. 🙂
    Thanks Wil!

Oh yeah! And Happy New Year everyone! It’s 2008 here in Halifax.

Pretty sunsets are nice too, though.

Hey Wil – you had lots of time on British tv last night commmenting on top films of the eighties. Good to see Stand By Me right up there, but The Breakfast Club was my favourite 80s movie.

  28. dake says:

I see sunsets like that all the time- minus the palm trees-but that’s because I work outdoors on evening shifts.
That’s just one of the many perks of living in the Valley( the Willamette).
Of course, I never have a camera handy, even though I keep telling myself to bring one… Good job!

I missed this particular sunset but we DO get some incredible sunsets in West L.A. too. About a month or two ago when we had all those massive fires and the smoke was everywhere, the sky was a massive red and the Sun was redder than a flare. It was unearthly.
As beautiful as these sunsets are, it tells me that humans need to do something about our planet’s ecosystems. Things are going haywire.

I was just watching the Rose Bowl game on TV (go USC) They showed a beautiful sunset (not as nice as your Magic Hour); the mountains were all aglow in pink hue. In New Mexico they named the crimson mountains Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ).
Hope you have a blessed new year.

I live in northern Arizona and we get sunsets like that pretty frequently. I have a nice collection of photos of them as well. Every time another one happens, though, it’s just as special.
