A little celebration

I bought myself this bottle of Oban when I started my current writing project. I put it on my desk, and looked at it every day from when I started breaking the story, right up until I finished the last bit of rewriting, just a few minutes ago.

I’m having just one finger, neat. I’m sure it’s the occasion talking, but this is the nicest glass of scotch whisky I’ve had in a very long time.

    Grats! Nice photo, too.
Hmmm, Scotch sounds like a good idea…

Finishing any writing project is always cause for celebration – no matter the time of day (well, except maybe if it’s before noon ;)).

Congratulations! Maybe you can chase it with a Guiness.
I’m more of a rum guy myself, on those infrequent occasions when I have the hard stuff.

Oh my boyfriend loves that stuff 🙂
    Hooray for celebrations!

Congrats Wil…hopefully we’ll be privy to the secret writing project soon.
and Chuck, i agree with you, definitely more of a rum guy. If I didn’t have some strange rhinovirus killing my sense of taste, i’d have a nice raspberry rum shrub tonight. Maybe I will anyway…

  12. DavePress says:

excellent. I haven’t accomplished anything this week to celebrate drinking, but I am doing it anyway.
That looks like a lovely scotch, regardless, congratulations man. May your next project be worthy of a Johnnie Walker Blue.

Oban 14 is very tasty; and congratulations on finishing your script!
Speaking of single-malt, have you ever been to Hi Times in Costa Mesa? If not, oh dude. You must. There is an entire store aisle and a locked cabinet of excellent single-malt, from under $20 for Bowmore to “maybe if I sell my car…” And then there’s the two-level wine cellar. And the walk-in imported beer cooler.
Also really damn cool: Assassin’s Creed. That’s going to be my treat to myself for getting through my pile of work this week. Have you played it yet?

Sir, you are indeed a smart writer. What a nice reward!
I don’t claim to know anything about any kind of booze (college student), but I very much like Wild Turkey.

I will have a drink in your honor, then! Congratulations!
Threadjack moment, but: I finally saw the episode of CSI where you guest starred! Oh my god — Walter’s awesome! My fiance did not recognize you until I pointed you out (we did have to rewatch the scenes so he could look for you) and I’ll have you know that for the rest of the evening I will be quoting Walter. “What?! Walter! My name is Walter!” “Finders keepers!” “It’s my sweater!” Oh yes, and with the Guinness I’ll soon be imbibing soon this should be a fun evening. Well done episode. And congrats on finishing your script!! 🙂

  19. Renshai says:

Highland scotch… yum. I know what it is like to have to have will power (no pun intended) when it comes to a special bottle. I have a 1968 (the year of my birth) Armagnac that i only have one glass of a year on my birthday. The wait makes even better.

Oban, nice! I think you’d like Té Bheag too if you can find it (though technically it’s a Gaelic whiskey not a Scotch).

Excellent taste indeed. They even sell it at Costco!!
    Congrats!

    I’m gonna play sleuth, here.
    A) This is a really cool project, too cool to talk about in detail.
    B) It’s a script.
    C) It’s deserving of scotch. Fine scotch, at that.
    D) There’s a writer’s strike, and we know you wouldn’t go against that, so it’s neither a movie or TV.
This leads me to believe it’s either a play or a comic book script. Given the dorkitude of you, it’s probably a comic book.
OMFG! Dude! You’re writing the new Batman comic?!?!?!!!!

  25. jbay says:

Having had more than my fair share of tedious writing assignments, I can fully appreciate the sentiment express and implied via that photo. Although I would have held out for bourbon – I have to be the only lawyer in town that doesn’t drink scotch.
My fear of scotch is that I’m afraid that it would be like sex or cocaine – I’m afraid that I’d like it!

Congrats on finishing your project! That has got to feel sweet. Cheers to you and your Oban. It is always nice to have a celebration with something wonderful. Perhaps a measurement of two fingers would do. Enjoy! Can’t wait till you can share details with us about your project.

Congrats on finishing and enjoy the reward. I recently had some 40 yr old Glen Livet over Christmas as a present to myself. Money well spent.

I prefer Johnny Walker (Green) myself, but a 14yo Oban doesn’t sound bad at all 😉
    Congrats on the project Wil!

I’m a Bushmills man myself. Bought a bottle of the 1608 earlier today for similar reasons. Also for Irish coffee.

  34. Joe Rybicki says:

Yes, and did you know why clear, clean water makes such a difference in the whisky drinking experience?
    Anyone? Class? Anyone?
That’s right Jimmy, because it lowers the surface tension of the booze, allowing the lusciously scented chemicals to escape.

Great reference Nathan! As I was reading the earlier comments, that’s exactly what I was thinking to myself.
As for weighing in on the booze of choice, I’ve recently been introduced to Irish Whisky. Jameson’s has my attention now, both for taste and price.
Wil, anxious to hear all the details…

  44. Nathan says:
    6 January, 2008 at 7:15 am

    ::bows deeply to wiseguy::
Excellent choice on the Jameson’s. I used to be a scotch drinker and settled on the Irish a few years ago. Make sure you get the rundown on Catholic vs. Protestant before you visit Dublin, though. They’re serious about it there.

  45. Starr01 says:
    6 January, 2008 at 7:37 am

Ok I know this is a dumb question but I have been wondering for awhile now and I know you good people will know: what is “a finger of scotch” is it like a shot?

  46. vark says:
    6 January, 2008 at 8:13 am

Oban is a small town on the west coast of Scotland. There used to be a health food store there called Oban Sesame.

  47. Andrew says:
    6 January, 2008 at 8:18 am

Starr01, it’s an amount of alcohol equal to the width of one finger, which in a highball glass gives you an amount roughly equivalent to a shot. I am told by my Scotch-drinking friends that it is inappropriate to refer to a shot of Scotch because one should not shoot Scotch, one should sip it. I can’t imagine wanting to do either one, personally.

  48. Kurt Hunt says:
    6 January, 2008 at 8:29 am

Be sure to visit Oban if you ever get the chance… the bay overlooks some of the western islands of Scotland, and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
Plus, you can tour the distillery. That’s about the best excuse you’ll ever have to drink scotch at 10am.

  49. brazos605 says:
    6 January, 2008 at 10:34 am

Oban is good stuff. For whatever reason, I can drink it like water. Needless to say, I have some wild memories associated with it.
Another one you might try is Caol Ila. I’ve read that it’s the islay component of the Johnnie Walker Black blend. It seemed like I recognized the flavor, but maybe it was my imagination. Either way, it’s an interesting taste. Very smoky.
And congratulations on finishing your project. Maybe I should place a bottle on my desk, too.
