50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

almost there . . . stay on target . . .

  • WWdN in Exile

I’m racing toward the deadline on my script, listening to Radio Free Burrito’s Mixtape, Volume One. I forgot how much fun I had putting that together, so I think I’ll do another one when I get some free time.

I’ve been looking desperately for the final line of the script for five days now, and I found it about an hour ago, while I was writing an entirely different scene.

I was working on an entirely different scene with entirely different characters, and my brain went, "DUDE! GO TO THE END RIGHT NOW AND TYPE THIS OUT BECAUSE I’VE GOT THE ENDING!"

My brain usually knows what it’s talking about, so I hopped on down to the last page of my script, and wrote down what it told me.

I know this seems like a lot of wanking, but I’ve worked so hard to find this ending, to give it just the right emotional note (it’s quite delicate to strike, which you’ll understand when this project is finally revealed,) I wanted to celebrate the moment with Random McEric‘s Dynamite Monkey:

Dynamite_monkey

So as of about ten minutes ago, I’m one step closer to my Oban, with just a couple of steps remaining.

That’s what I have to do when I’m writing – put down the parts that come to you when they come to you, and you can always go back, rearrange, or fill-in where the inspiration strikes!
    WTG!!

Congratulations, Wil! I know that joy, that moment when that PERFECT line or scene or interchange appears magically in your mind.
    Way to go!

We’ll worry about the fighters, Wil, you worry about the tower.
    🙂
Congratulations! It’s great when the final pieces of something fall into place. In physics, we loved the day when all of what we did was putting things together, rather than taking them apart.
We can’t wait to see what next comes from the brain of the great Wil!

This is awesome news. Also, its kinda cool that as you posted this, I finally got my copy of the hardcover Best Days that my fiance bought me for Christmas. Damn postal systems delayed it.

Trip out! I use this image as my avatar on a secret social network I belong to.
I discovered Radio Free Burrito on Odeo a few weeks ago. I liked it. Glad to hear you’re considering pick it up again.
    Stay on target. Almost there!

“Almost there…stay on target…” Sounds like the script from Star Wars when Luke Skywalker was about to blow up the Death Star.

I know we whisky drinkers are prickly about our drink choices, so please take the following suggestion in the spirit of sharing in which it was intended.
I too find Oban delicious, but if you really want to celebrate — I mean, really celebrate — go grab a bottle of one of the following nourishing (and almost indescribably potent) elixirs:
The Macallan Cask Strength – This is a non-vintage bottling that’s sweet without being syrupy. You’ll almost definitely want to drop a full squeeze of water in due to the 59% ABV, but boy is it worth it.
And Aberlour A’bunadh – Similar to the Macallan (and also a cask strength offering), but less sweet, with just a hint more smoke.
Neither of these are overly smoky or (shudder) peaty, so if that’s what you’re looking for these won’t scratch the itch. But if you’re after a fine, celebratory, winter-strength whisky to savor, these are both very special.
And I don’t mean “special” like “take out another mortgage special” — they should only run you about sixty bucks each. And at that strength, they should last you a nice long while.
That is, assuming you don’t leave them at your in-laws in Chicago over Christmas.
Excuse me while I go weep softly in a corner.
    -j.

Oban… sweet, sweet nectar of the Scots. Gives this lad chills to reflect on how it lovingly warms the sub cockles and instills purposeful haze.

Nice work! Last lines/final words are so important to the audience, be they readers or viewers or listeners…we know that, so I think we often grind unreasonably looking for the perfect combination of words and structure. I’m glad this one snuck from behind when you weren’t looking.

An American using the word wanking?
Just when I got used to it being a british only word that we can insult people with, without them knowing. 😀
Congrats on the ending as well! Its nice when things like that just pop into place isnt it.

    Freeman:

It’s not Luke, but it’s from that sequence, yes.
I think “Almost there…” and “Stay on target” are two separate lines from two earlier unsuccessful runs at the exhaust port. Luke made the successful run, of course.

Oban? The Macallan is a much better choice, you philistine.
Not that I’m sending you a bottle or anything.
But congrats on nearing the end.

Way to go on your current project! Keep up the good work! Stay on target…

Heeeeey…. don’t I recognize that middle finger from somewhere? Isn’t that from the picture of you outside the Haliburton building while you and Anne were doing the Avon walk in 2002?
*shifty eyes* What? No! I’ve never been to the gallery page on the old WWdN! Never!! *more shifty eyes*

Hello… First comment here since the old soapbox days.
The Macallan is a fine whisky as is The Oban but for real flavour you need to try Laphroaig (I’d do a link thing but I haven’t got the hang of this yet – google will find it for you) the most flavoursome of all the Islay malts – peaty, smokey and with the tang from maturation by the sea, all helped by spending 10 years in an old Makers Mark bourbon cask too!
P.S. 262/300 arrived safely in the uk and we all know how good it is so I wont add too much here but to say it dovetailed Soooo well with the other books on my bedside this holiday is an understatement. Can I recommend “Geekspeak – How Life + Mathematics = Happiness” by Dr Graham Tattersall and “Where Did It All Go Right? – by Andrew Collins” it is a memoir about being normal, coming from nowhere and not doing much. and I bought it for the delightful larkinesque tagline “They tucked him up, his mum and dad” I’m sure Amazon or the like will find them and the second book even has a website http://www.wherediditallgoright.com

Hi, finally summoned the courage to sign up, simply to add to your whisky discussions and recommend ‘Highland Park’ – officially the Best Spirit in the World 2005 (according to your US Spirit Journal). It can’t be biased because I come from where it’s made, it’s official!
Congrats on the script anyway, Wil. I too would love a Mixtape v2…

Congratulations and huzzah on finishing your script! It’s 5:30 here on the east coast, and I shall be drinking a toast in your honor. It would be rude – RUDE I SAY! – for you not to join me. 🙂
