Is anyone interested in WWdN merchandise?

  • WWdN in Exile

Before I put in the time and effort to make some new WWdN merchandise for the WWdN CafePress store, I’m looking for a show of hands: is anyone interested in some WWdN gear, like T-shirts and stuff?

I don’t have the time or desire to run a store myself, or take the risk of buying a lot of stock ahead of time. I would not be doing this for shiny gold rocks as much as I’d be doing it for the fun and to increase the chances that I’d be out in the world doing my thing one day, and see someone wearing a WWdN T-shirt, and to "spread the virus" as Jonathan Coulton says.

Stats tell me that about 200K people are reading my blog (man, that’s a lot and is so very weird) so if about 100 or so of you guys chime in, I think it would be enough to make it worth the time and expense of paying a designer to put something together.

I’m a huge fan of American Apparel, so I’m thinking about moving to Spreadshirt if I do this. Obviously, I’m not going to bother if there isn’t enough interest, though. I am supposed to be writing, after all.

I would totally buy some merch!
*I’m also a designer too, if you’re looking for one 😉

I would definitely buy a WWdN shirt.

    Make it so, Number One.
(I’m so sorry. I started typing that before I realized, y’know, duh. You must hear that WAY too often, Wil. But…but, see, it’s the sort of thing I say ALL the TIME, whenever it’s appropriate (and, man, is it ever appropriate all the time!). So, yeah. Sorry!)
Also, um, I will buy t-shirts, but only in black, because I’m one of THEM.

    I would!
And for my two cents, the babydoll style is awesome..

I would, but I’d strongly suggest using PrintFection instead of CafePress or Spreadshirt. They have much better prices and they support PNGs with transparency. I use them for the Jump Leads store and the quality is truly exceptional.

Count me in, babydoll or womens sizes would be great.

  7. FEJ says:
    28 January, 2008 at 8:34 pm

    I would so buy a “Don’t be a dick” or a Wheaton 300 type.
Also a plain WWdN sticker or mug would rawk!

I’d buy some sort of shirt, but probably not a T-shirt since I have WAY too many of those. Perhaps a long-sleeved one or a hoodie!! As for color… the darker the better, in my opinion!

Definately Wil!! Tee and/or hat, so count me in!!

Tee, Hoodie, Gargantuan Mug!!! A girl’s gotta have her coffee.

I’ll be honest – I’m not sure I’d buy it if it said WWdN and that’s all, but if it was cute I might – or, if it was clear what WWdN was, so my students would com closer to knowing what it was while I was lecturing. 🙂

I’m in, as long as it’s affordable and cute and catchy and mysterious.
    Like:
“I’m just this guy, you know?” on the front and WWDN on the back.
    Or something like that.

  13. aviendha says:

I would be interested in shirts or other WWdN gear but stuff that isn’t too expensive/hassle to send to Canada.

  14. Ada Cole says:

Can there be a design contest? Also, would you consider having it printed by a pro shop? I am mortally afraid of those 1 off shops.

  15. twinkie925 says:

    i would so buy a tshirt 😀

  16. eleventeen says:

    Mugs/Shirts…
“Don’t be a dick” would sell easily.
“Just a geek” would do well.
    I’m in

I am so in. Sign me up. Wil Wheaton for President, 2008. I feel a write in candidate coming on.

I bought a WWDN mug a while ago can’t remember how long, haha so it has been a bit. I use it quite regularly and even dishwash it and has held up really well, and yes it was from Cafe Press, but I do agree about clothing, I would like to see a higher thread count and I am willing to pay for a good quality shirt that will last. I would defintitly do a shirt and mug.

  19. Placebo Effect says:
    28 January, 2008 at 10:06 pm

    Yes.
If you make shirts, they must be red.

  20. a.real.girl says:
    28 January, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I’m in too. I second the “I’m just this guy, you know?” idea, especially for girl tees

  21. Kev T says:

You should give the fans a chance to do a design versus paying a designer. I have seen other sites where fans subit designs for logos or other things and the designs are as good as the professionals.
As someone who has some connections with the custom t-shirt business, I agree that Cafe Press is over priced for what you get. I understand your challenge in terms of not wanting to front a large chunk of change and to store vasts amounts of shirts. I would suggest doing the pre-order thing, like books, video games, etc, do.
I could mock-up images of what the shirt would look like and you can post it with a link to some online money system like Paypal or maybe Amazon can do something with this. The key is people will have to understand that their order will take as much as 90-days to fill.
    It is just a thought.
You can put my fiancee down for a shirt for sure. In our apartment I walk past two Wil Wheaton clocks, four coffee mugs, and I have seen her in your underwear ;), two messanger bags, and I think she has one of each of your past T-shirts. Oh, I know there are a couple of your books around here somewhere. If I did not know any better, I would guess she thinks you pretty cool.
Actually, I think you are cool as well. You would never remember this, but we talked at TechTV during the The Screen Savers. I was part of the crew during one of your visits to the show.
I think it is great you still interact with your fans, and as an aspiring screen writer, I love seeing your efforts in writing and other media.
Good luck with the shirt thing. If you want some help with this, I might be able to lend a hand, for no money.
You know my fiancee will be buying one, maybe two, or three, but I have to stop her at three. We just do not have the space around here.

  23. Demosthenes says:

I’m still waiting for the WWdN dice bag…

  24. Nita says:
    28 January, 2008 at 11:13 pm

i would so buy a Wil Wheaton says ‘Don’t be a dick’ shirt. or mousepad. or mug. or button. or license plate. ok maybe not license plate.

  25. Ian Warrender says:
    28 January, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Hey Wil, I don’t have time to comment has much as I would like, however I would buy T-Shirts and whatever else your selling… one problem I’m British will you still be able to send me one?

  26. dante says:

Interest from the Adam – he’s a bit like the Jesus, but comes earlier in the story.
Yes, I’d like to buy stuff. I like to buy stuff from people I like.

  27. Liz says:
    29 January, 2008 at 12:06 am

Of. Course. Wil Wheaton T-shirts, coffee cups, buttons, stickers, D&D dice bags, underwear… (Yeah, CafePress has a thong underwear option for you to put logos on. Creepy? I think so.)

  28. wynand says:
    29 January, 2008 at 12:23 am

I want to second, third, or whatever the design contest idea! That would be a great way for your readers/fans to participate in the site they love.

  29. Alan says:
    29 January, 2008 at 12:32 am

    Absolutely and they ship internationally

  30. Chuck says:
    29 January, 2008 at 12:42 am

I had a WWDN t-shirt a while back; I think it got lost in one of my various moves since I bought it. I’d probably get another one if it had some cool artwork on it.

  31. Louffi says:
    29 January, 2008 at 1:18 am

Yes yes yes. The customs fees for the import to Germany might kill me, but I want WWdN stuff, preferrably (preferably?) a T-Shirt. Or two. *g*

  32. Eric in PA says:
    29 January, 2008 at 1:23 am

After coming back and reading more comments, I see there’s quite the demand for stuff in black, or at least various forms of not-white.
I’d like to add my support for long-sleeved black stuff, since I, too, am one of THEM…

I know the group sentiment is against Cafe Press, but for those of us with high volume to surface area ratios, they seem to be the only ones who purvey items of multiple-X sizes. Please consider making a couple items available there, if it’s not too much trouble to support both.
    Thanks!

  34. roquas says:
    29 January, 2008 at 2:17 am

Whew. Guess I’m not the only one which makes this even more probable.
    My two cents:
    – Design contest would be very cool (just state some restrictions in terms of colors/formats)
    – Overseas should be made possible (although I concur with Louffi, the import fees and taxes for Germany sum up to ~33%)
    300#250 😉

  35. Andy says:
    29 January, 2008 at 2:41 am

LaNdSPEEdR or I’m just this guy, you know? I would so buy those, as long as you did my size, I’m extra medium.
Yeah, do the t-shirts please, and please ship overseas!

  36. Wayne Zachary says:
    29 January, 2008 at 2:52 am

Hell yes! I’ll take a black (Yes, I’m one of those as well) “Don’t Be a Dick” shirt with your smiling mug and thumbs up please!

  37. Ian Coomber says:
    29 January, 2008 at 3:14 am

I tend to agree with alot of other posts.
make sure they would be available to people overseas.
make ones with slogans like ‘im just his guy’ or ‘dont be a dick’ instead of just ‘wwdn’.
and i think that just adds to the 100 people you wanted to chime in. you may now consider me chimed.

  38. JT-Gigcast says:
    29 January, 2008 at 3:40 am

    How bout a “WWWWD?” t-shirt?
    (What Would Wil Wheaton Do?)
But yeah, WW T-Shirts would rock.
    JT

  40. Dark_Clown says:

I’d go for one (International) and see how many people on the London Underground would comment on…
Wil Wheaton says, “Don’t be a dick!”
Not sure how the bankers would feel but hey….

  41. uranushertz says:
    29 January, 2008 at 4:48 am

    Wil,
Hell yeah, new designs! Only problem with AA shirts is that using them will automatically deny a bunch of your fanbase from buying, since they only go to 11, I mean XXL.

  42. Cross says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:00 am

This T-shirt junkie is definitely interested. But why go to so much hassle coming up with designs–why not let your 200K readers come up with their own ideas? Just a thought.

  43. thewoo007 says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:04 am

I would buy a T-shirt, if it is anything but black.

  44. Trevor says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:13 am

    I’d definitely be interested.

  45. RickH says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:27 am

Yes Yes A thousand times yes. Did I get that from someplace?

  46. Kuromu says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:37 am

I would be interested in new merchandise AND also agree with the fan-designed material idea!

  47. viridescence says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:40 am

    *raises hand*
Especially if you go with American Apparel because the quality is great. I want to get as much wear out of my potential WW t-shirt as possible…

  48. Riley Joy says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:42 am

Yes, definitely interested. Hopefully coffee cups will be included? I don’t drink coffee, just have a thing about CUPS.

  49. Hayseed Kid says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:42 am

    Count me in for a +15 T-Shirt of WWDN-ness!

  50. a2gemma says:
    29 January, 2008 at 5:43 am

Interested? Dude, I still wear my “Wil Wheaton has a Posse” t-shirt from a couple years ago!
