50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Is anyone interested in WWdN merchandise?

  • WWdN in Exile

Before I put in the time and effort to make some new WWdN merchandise for the WWdN CafePress store, I’m looking for a show of hands: is anyone interested in some WWdN gear, like T-shirts and stuff?

I don’t have the time or desire to run a store myself, or take the risk of buying a lot of stock ahead of time. I would not be doing this for shiny gold rocks as much as I’d be doing it for the fun and to increase the chances that I’d be out in the world doing my thing one day, and see someone wearing a WWdN T-shirt, and to "spread the virus" as Jonathan Coulton says.

Stats tell me that about 200K people are reading my blog (man, that’s a lot and is so very weird) so if about 100 or so of you guys chime in, I think it would be enough to make it worth the time and expense of paying a designer to put something together.

I’m a huge fan of American Apparel, so I’m thinking about moving to Spreadshirt if I do this. Obviously, I’m not going to bother if there isn’t enough interest, though. I am supposed to be writing, after all.

    How bout a “WWWWD?” t-shirt?
    (What Would Wil Wheaton Do?)
Oh, JT. Good start, but you quit too early.
    The correct answer is:
“WWWWW: What Would Wil Wheaton Wear?”
You could go also ask “What Would Wil Wheaton Wear While Writing?” but that’s going a bit too far, don’t you think? Indubitably.

I would like a “Wil says: Don’t be a dick” shirt.
And please, please, please offer babydoll (girl-cut) T’s in a size XL. I’m not fat; I’m 6 ft tall and buxom. Stick-insect sizes don’t cut it.

I’m in. I would definitely buy WWDN merchandise. I would pre-order if that would help.
    WWWWD is very funny.
I think a design contest would be great.

    I’m in!
T-shirt, keychain, keystrap and a koffee mug.
Just make sure you find a store that accepts Visa Electron and MasterCard Debit so everyone can shop there 😉
“The Traveler and I caused havoc for the Q continuum, and all i got was this lousy t-shirt”

Not that we would ever want to distract you from your writing… But some merchandise would be pretty cool yeah 😀

This Canadian girl would love to buy your stuff….if us international buyers can do so without having to promise our third born..and the right sizes are available…

    I would definitely buy something.

OK, I think we’re all agreed, there has to be a “Don’t be a dick” shirt. However I really believe there is a certain group in your readership, myself included, who would proudly wear something with “Jack Thompson can suck my balls” on it. I for one would buy the shirt AND the mug.
    And the bumper sticker.
    Even though I don’t own a car.
    With the clown sweater picture.
    Cause it’s creepy.

Well, judging from the number of positive responses in this comment section, I would think it’s a no brainer, Wil. I’m pretty much in agreement with the “no” on CafePress from the masses. But, from another vendor, count me in.

  12. Wumpa Yuna says:
    29 January, 2008 at 6:55 am

I whole heartedly agree with Wick – Though I’d probably also buy anything else you’d come up with.
P.S. I just received Happiest Days as a late X-Mas gift and “Bravo Mr. Wheaton!”

  13. horsenbuggy says:
    29 January, 2008 at 6:59 am

    I would consider it.
And for anyone who likes cool tshirts, I’d like to recommend my friend’s site: http://www.lintyfresh.com/
Wil, I know he’s done some commission based work, give him a holler if you like his work.

    OK, gotta activate that link:

Please do offer shirts – I’ve been reading your blog and your books for years now, and I’d love to trumpet my fandom from the rooftops; well from my chest and / or back 🙂
FWIW, I would agree with everyone else who said it: just say “no” to cafépress.
Other than that, go for it. As long as there are options for shipping to the UK I will be buying.

  16. angie k says:

I would totally buy a LaNdSPEEdR shirt and a +15 shirt of WWdN-ness!
Just please don’t close the CafePress store! I like those designs, too and would like to still buy stuff from that store. What I wish is if someone could find a shirt seller that makes larger women’s tshirts. I’m sized out of both CafePress women’s shirts and American Apparel women’s shirts.
I await the new gear designs! 🙂

  17. Mr. Lizard says:
    29 January, 2008 at 7:19 am

Yeah. Maybe. If what you’re selling isn’t so geeky that the jokes go over my (barely-a-geek-wanna-be) head. A WWdotN mug on my desk would be a great place for me to place pens and pencils for my coworkers to steal. Especially if WWdotN is ever going to be up and running again.

  18. cryssyer says:
    29 January, 2008 at 7:20 am

I’m raising my hand that I would totally buy tons o’ stuff!

  19. Mr. Lizard says:
    29 January, 2008 at 7:30 am

Also, I like the contest idea. And I also like the “WWWWD” idea. Maybe on the back of the shirt. Maybe with “Wil says: Don’t be a dick” sewn onto the top edge of the front pocket with a picture of Wil in the clown sweater just below that.

  20. ALRO says:
    29 January, 2008 at 7:37 am

    I’d buy stuff too…
I’d love the laptop backpack with the seatbelt buckle with “Don’t be a dick” on it.

  21. Janiece says:
    29 January, 2008 at 7:37 am

    I’d buy a T-shirt.

    YES YES YES YES!!!
And I vote for the “dont be a dick” and for girly sizes, cause some us big busted women, can not fit into the nightgown type without looking about 8 months pregant!!!
    WHOOOWW I want a shirt!!!!

  25. starshine_diva says:
    29 January, 2008 at 8:09 am

    Wow!!!
    So many cool ideas!!!
I have to admit that while I love T-shirts, I can’t wear them many places (stupid professionalism), so any other kind of gear would make me happy too! Tank tops, mugs… mini-Darwin… And all of that other stuff.
Maybe it’s time to set up a “pitch me your ideas and lets vote” type website, threadless-style.

  26. ZB says:

I would buy a shirt if some of the profits were donated to something like Child’s Play.

I take it that writing “Wil Wheaton Rules” on the side of my Chucks, on the rubber bits, wasn’t nearly good enough. Fine fine!
I would like to design a tshirt for you sir.

  28. IamtheRooster says:

    Echo Hotamacudd’s comments

  29. Becky..Absent Minded Housewife says:

I would definitely buy a shirt if it captioned, “Uncle Willy’s MILF Squad: Thundercats HO!” or something of the like.

Can I request a Wil Bobblehead???

  31. zizban says:
    29 January, 2008 at 8:51 am

A shirt, mousepad and mug that reads “Wil Wheaton says, ‘Don’t be a dick!'” would rock.

  32. Almost Lucid (Brad) says:
    29 January, 2008 at 8:54 am

Yep. If I could get a well-designed WWdN shirt for $20.00 SHIPPED, I’d do it in a heartbeat. If it was $15.00, I’d tell my friends. 🙂

  33. Simply Caitlin says:

If a Wil bobblehead is involved i am SOOO buying atLEAST 2!!
    I will purchase 🙂

  34. Lombardian says:

Yes- I would be interested in tee shirts – for sure !!!

  35. Chuck says:
    29 January, 2008 at 9:26 am

I see the old stuff from WWDN on CafePress is still for sale. I had a Perfect Imperfection t-shirt and I never had any issues with it, nor have I had issues with mugs I’ve ordered from them. But I hear the shirts don’t hold up as well as some others. I did like that design though. Of course, a more modernized, even cooler design would be fun to buy instead.

  36. ChazB says:
    29 January, 2008 at 9:31 am

American Apparel is hawesome. Their beefy Ts are the best shirts ever! I’d buy anything not sold through Cafe Press or one of the other crappy online make-your-own-merch places. Your best bet is to probably do small runs from a reputable company and ship it yourself. I’ve known sites to do presales and then have that number (plus a few extra for cons) made up. This can be done for any type of merch, and allows you to control the quality.

  37. enjonel says:
    29 January, 2008 at 9:32 am

I’d look, I’d buy. I have no sales resistance.

  38. Ishus says:
    29 January, 2008 at 9:34 am

I’m a design geek and I think a shirt design contest would be totally rad, particularly if you win a free shirt.

  39. 1BigBank says:
    29 January, 2008 at 9:46 am

I’m gonna go against the grain here and say no, I will not wear any WWDN t-shirts.
Only cause I have no way to get them, just like your books.
    Sorry bro.
Now, if I did have a way to get them I would wear:
Wil Wheaton says, “Don’t be a dick!”
    Wil Wheaton loves Kraft Dinner!
Or, put your big smiling face up there with a couple of blacked out teeth saying, Wil Wheaton says, “When playing hockey, wear a face mask!”
Now on the back of it, put your face with a painful grimace and underneath, “P.S. don’t forget your jock!”
There’s all kinds you can do, so good luck with it.
    Mark.

    I’ll buy a shirt.
    Though I vote spreadshirt.

  41. bradhuns says:

The word is go Wil – I would be more than happy to spread the WWdN virus.

  42. Syndelin says:
    29 January, 2008 at 9:56 am

I scrolled through all these comments just to add my YES! Interested for sure, would buy probably.
I saw someone mentioned Zazzle as well. I bought the custom 360voice shirts from there, and they are a *bit* pricey imo, but when I got them, I could see why. They are awesomely soft and comfy and I could live in them quite happily! I think they also have cheaper options… but I wanted certain things (long thermal type sleeves, extra design on the back, etc.)
Soft comfy WW shirts? I may as well sell my house now.
Think of it this way Wil – You will have to do tests of a few companies, to find somewhere worthy of bearing your name. You know what that means, right? You’ll have to buy t-shirts! ~_^

  43. freefood says:
    29 January, 2008 at 9:58 am

If they are American Apparel and I like the design, count me in.

LOL Silly Wil – always underestimating his Personality Power.

  46. greybalt says:
    29 January, 2008 at 10:11 am

Lots of good ideas…so i’ll throw out a crazy one….
I want a T-shirt that has an image of the “Clown Sweater” on the front.
    And on the back either…
    “Geekier Than Wil”
    “Wil made me do it!”
    or
    “don ‘t be a dick”
