50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

the best thing, ever

  • WWdN in Exile

Anne and I went into a little coffee place in Eagle Rock this afternoon, on a spur of the moment date.

While we waited, the girl who poured our coffee looked at me from behind the espresso machine and said, "Are you who I think you are?"

I’ve heard this question a lot in my life, and there really isn’t a good way to answer it that doesn’t make me feel like a dick.

"I’m not sure," I said. "Who do you think I am?"

She hesitated before saying, in a soft and uncertain voice, "Are you . . . Wil . . . Wil Wheaton?"

"Yeah," I said. "That’s me."

She blushed and smiled. "You’re my favorite!"

Anne, took my hand in hers and squeezed it. Her eyes sparkled. "He’s my favorite, too," She said.

I looked at my wife. I felt the same way I did when she said, "Yes."

"That’s the best thing, ever," I said.

I sit in front of my computer, tired from the week, looking to the weekend ahead… I read your blog entry and a smile broaches my face and for a minute, I am enlightened.
OK, seriously, it lightened my mood!
    Thanks.

That is awesome, Wil. Though I don’t show *her* nearly enough, the love my wife shows me is, indeed, the best thing ever.

Ohh, that is so sweet. Thanks for sharing, Wil! (Would that everyone could find such happiness.)
And along the lines of random celebrity moments: you were a clue in yesterday’s crossword puzzle. Pretty cool, I thought!

when i’m around people really in love, it sparks this little pilot light of hope that i’ll find someone who’ll think i’m their favorite too.
you guys are uebercute together and i stand by what i said when i first met anne, “Dude, you married UP!” she’s supercool.

“there really isn’t a good way to answer it that doesn’t make me feel like a dick.”
I met Bruce Campbell once. His reply to that question was, “Somebody has to be.”
Seemed appropriate for him, I’m not sure if you could get away with it or not.

  15. Zeno says:

So, you get recognized which has to be pretty cool. Then, you get the blushy/flirty thing, which is nice. Then you get the ever so slightly jealous/possessive wife thing and the sweet comment. Damn, Wheaton, that is a nice few seconds!

  16. mazurkr says:
    11 January, 2008 at 9:25 pm

    truly sweet.
i’ve always wondered how it must play with your psyche in so many ways to be a “celebrity”.
“yes, of course i’m who you think i am. but no, i can’t say that, because than i look like i expect to be recognized”
you (and poor britney and all the rest) have my sympathy…
on a selfish note, i’ll echo all the readers who are requesting more tvsquad TNG reviews, as well as the pledge to buy the book if ever published.

  20. Wil says:
    11 January, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Then you get the ever so slightly jealous/possessive wife thing and the sweet comment.
No no no no no. Not at all. She doesn’t have a jealous bone in her body, and it was important to me to capture how sweet and loving the moment was. It wasn’t about “get away from my guy” at all; it was a “I love my guy” moment, and it made me happier than anything has in ages.
I wanted to capture the essence of that moment as unambiguously as possible; I’m sad that I didn’t.

  21. Arachne Jericho says:
    11 January, 2008 at 11:03 pm

I didn’t think she was being jealous/possessive at all. There being the “too” and all. And I’m a suspicious type.
I enjoyed sharing this moment with you, Wil. Congratulations!
    P.S. – you’re in my list of favorites. 😉

  24. ColleenS says:

I did not see jealousy or possessiveness in what Anne said. I just think it is the
most loving thing a woman could say.
    Rock on Happy Couple!

  25. Patty says:
    12 January, 2008 at 3:24 am

That is ADORABLE! And having read your blog for years and getting a good idea of what Anne is like, it didn’t come across as jealous or possessive at all.

  26. ShempLugosi says:
    12 January, 2008 at 3:47 am

You and Anne are very lucky, friend Wil. I’m 51 years old and STILL looking!

  27. karenls says:
    12 January, 2008 at 4:44 am

Wil, you described it perfectly. I could see it in my head. Your storytelling just moved all the other gunk up there out of the way and gave me a little ‘morning coffee movie’. Without my coffee even, as it isn’t done brewing yet. – – Oh it’s done now. Better go get my mug o’starter fluid and enjoy your story one more time!

  28. Sumo says:

I have a ‘no autographs’ policy which works really well for me: I don’t sign them (especially out at restaurants) and no one ever asks for one.
But it’s nice for me to be able say 🙂

  33. MiladyGreenEyes says:
    12 January, 2008 at 7:39 am

That is the cutest thing I’ve ever heard. I “awwww”ed out loud.

  34. Celtic Mama says:
    12 January, 2008 at 7:48 am

You must have heard the collective “awwwwww” from all of us all the way in Pasadena! I’m so happy that you have the love a beautiful woman and that you still love each other as much as the day you married. That’s a RARE thing in Hollywood these days, let alone in everyday America.

  35. Topaz says:
    12 January, 2008 at 8:02 am

    Umm, Wil?
Considering that 30+ people took your story in the spirit in which it was written (i.e. as a sweet love interlude) and only ONE thought it showed jealousy on Anne’s part, I don’t think you should be sad at all. I wouldn’t call it failure on your part to set the correct tone.
Your mission, unlike our idiot President Shrub’s, was accomplished.

  36. Zeno says:
    12 January, 2008 at 8:13 am

    *sigh*
I didn’t mean my comment to be negative. Sorry it was taken as such. Thanks for the pile-on nonetheless. You gotta love the Internet.
Now, I’ll just fuck right off.
    Mission accomplished indeed.

  37. Topaz says:
    12 January, 2008 at 8:25 am

Zeno, I don’t believe anyone was trying to “pile on” you for having a different opinion.
If you felt Anne sounded jealous, you felt she sounded jealous. You’re allowed to interpret something in your own way.
Just because no one else shared your opinion, I don’t think that could be classified as “piling on.” Trust me on this. I’ve been electronically crucified enough to know.
Stick around and share your thoughts. As far as I know, you don’t HAVE to agree with other people – including Wil – to post here.

  38. tammy says:
    12 January, 2008 at 8:31 am

Thank you for writing this and pretty much everything you do.
Because it shows me that whenever I think, “WTF do I have to write about and why would anyone want to read stuff like that–I just have this average life, right?!!” – you prove me wrong (um, not that clerks recognize me…). I don’t think you know how much I’ll be cruising this blog and your books in my creative writing class this term.

  39. angie k says:
    12 January, 2008 at 8:49 am

Oh, that is all sorts of cute and sweet rolled into one! What a wonderful moment! Thank you for sharing.
For what it’s worth I don’t think Zeno was saying Anne is the jealous type. “He’s my favorite, too.” could be read a few ways, especially if you can’t hear the inflection or know the person. I’ve never met Anne but you speak so highly of her that I know she couldn’t be the jealous type so I didn’t read her comment that way. Text is a funny thing… it doesn’t always convey the right intonation.
That aside, I give it a thousand “Awwwwww!”s and yet one more “You guys are so awesome and cute!” and another “Thank you for posting something that’s starting my day in a wonderful way.”
    Cheers! 🙂

    >>>I wanted to capture the essence of that moment as unambiguously as possible; I’m sad that I didn’t.
No, Wil. You DID succinctly capture that moment, and with very few words to boot.
That is real writing. Good job.

  43. John (AS not DF) Black says:

I agree with the comments about intonation and text and have nothing against Zeno’s or anyone elses interpretation here but I think the question is what did the Barista mean by “You’re my favorite!”?
    Favourite actor..
    Favourite Star Trek Character…
    or Favourite writer/blogger!!!
Sorry about the U’s in favourite – USA and Britain two nations divided by a common language!

  44. Sarah says:
    12 January, 2008 at 10:51 am

    That’s so adorable.
I read the comments, and don’t think you didn’t capture the moment. I didn’t get jealousy from it, at all, and you can’t get every single person who reads what you write to get exactly what you intended out of it.
That’s just a sweet moment. Thank you for sharing. 🙂

*huge grin* ’tis a wondrous thing, to be loved.
(You’re *my* favourite, too! *joins the fangirly pile-on*)

  50. Christopher Ambler says:
    12 January, 2008 at 1:28 pm

Since the “only one person” note was made, allow me to make enemies, too, and say that it wasn’t only one person.
Accurate or not (and I have no idea, as I wasn’t there), the way it was written came across to me as jealous-wife, too.
I’m glad to see Wil state that that isn’t the case, and I’ll trust that he would know – but yes, that’s how it sounded to me. Mea culpa.
