Scalzi does these posts from time to time that are filled with information, mostly so he can point people to them when the information contained therein is requested at some point in the mysterious future.
This will be one of those posts. It may be updated from time to time, though it’s more likely that I’ll just write new posts that link back to this one, because that’s just how I roll.
If you’re interested in seeing me perform in person in 2008, here’s what’s on my schedule as of March 18:
April 27
2pm
Los Angeles Times Festival of Books
UCLA Campus
Westwood, CA
I won’t be able to perform, but I’ll be at the festival to sign all of my books, thanks to my friends at Mysterious Galaxy. I’m super excited about this because it’s the first real writers only thing I’ve ever done.
May 3
3pm
Mysterious Galaxy Books
San Diego, CA
Mysterious Galaxy is an indie booke shoppe that specializes in Science Fiction and Fantasy. I went there with Just a Geek, and this will be my first time back since then. I think 30 or 40 people came out last time, making a great audience for the reading, while still being small enough that I could talk to everyone who was there.
May 4
3pm
Book and a Beer
Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens
Escondido, CA
Stone Some of my favorite beers in the world are crafted by Stone, and Stone’s owner, Greg Koch, has a lot of the same beliefs about marketing and making stuff that is awesome that I do. At his brewery in Escondido (in North San Diego County) he has an incredible restaurant and gorgeous beer garden. A few times a year, he invites authors to come out for something he calls Book and a Beer, which is exactly what it sounds like. We’ll have Stone Pale Ale, Stone IPA, Arrogant Bastard, and all sorts of non-beer drinks if beer isn’t your cup of tea. I suspect this will be an intimate gathering, but it will most certainly be an awesome one. If you’ve ever wanted to have a beer with your old pal Wil, now you can do eet.
May 10-11
Emerald City ComiCon
Washington State Convention and Trade Center
Seattle, Washington.
This is an awesome show, with a focus fucos on indie
books and publishers. I think I’ll feel right at home, if I can keep
myself from totally geeking out too much. (Yeah, who am I kidding?)
The schedule hasn’t been finalized, but I’ll be doing a performance from Happiest Days and maybe Just a Geek
on Saturday, and I’ll be doing a more general Q&A about blogging,
writing manga, being a geek, the burdens of being awesome, and writing
humorous panel descriptions on Sunday.
I will have a booth to hang out in when I’m not empaneled, so I’m
bringing copies of all my books, pictures to sign, and my glasses and
my shoes, so I have them.
May 17-18
Super-Con
San Jose, CA
When I worked on NUMB3RS, I met the guys in charge of Super-Con in San Jose. In fact, they were a big part of making Alt Con 9 (the fake con in the show) look and feel as real as it did. I haven’t been to San Jose for a convention since the only way to get there was via mule train, so I’m looking forward to traveling up the coast in more modren style, perhaps by zeppelin or auto-gyro.
July 23-27
San Diego ComiCon
San Diego, CA
I’ll be doing some panels and signings with TokyoPop to support the new manga. I don’t have a schedule, yet. I’m also going to be there the entire time, getting my geek on. Maybe we can organize a WWdN meet-up if enough people are interested.
August 29-31
Penny Arcade Expo
Seattle, WA
I won’t be delivering a keynote, but I will be at PAX for the whole show. Last year, I didn’t get to do nearly as much gaming as I wanted, so that’s my number one priority this year. I’ll also be signing books and babies, and I’m going to perform a gaming-related story from Happiest Days. Probably something from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Geek. There will be a group photo, where we all show up with Wil Says . . . shirts. For the win.
Other than that . . .
I’ve been asked by several people if I’ll be going to Grand Slam in Burbank next month, or the Big Creation Star Trek con in Vegas this Summer. I’d like to go, but I’m not sure if it’ll happen. They didn’t invite me to Grand Slam last year (I have no idea why) and I always end up feeling like chump when I call them up and say, "So, uh, can I come to your con? People are wondering if I’m going to be there because you used to invite me all the time but never call any more. Did we break up and you didn’t tell me?"
I’m trying my best to schedule a bunch of cons this year, because I’m super proud of Happiest Days, I’ll have two Trek mangas to promote, and there’s something wonderful coming that will be released in the mysterious future. I feel like the time is right for me to make the effort to get off the West coast and travel a little bit to meet new people. I’ve sent e-mail to a few regional cons, expressing an interest in attending. Hopefully, I’ll hear back soon, and I’ll be mapping out the route our family truckster will take on Geektour 2008.

I know my rinky-dink town of Lake Charles, LA isn’t very appealing outside of Mardi gras but why not come to one of the Dallas/Plano Sci-Fi Cons? They are always packed and everyone I know including myself would make a trip just to see you. The one and only autograph I got of yours, I had to get through the mail via an old fan club from back in the day. It does however have a very interesting drawing of the bat symbol, but I’d much rather meet you in person. Pleeeease **giving you pouty face***
Wil, I see your schedule is pretty full, be you really ought to think about coming to Context 21 in Columbus OH. In case you’ve not heard of it, here is a quote from the website:
“What is Context?
Context is a friendly convention focused on speculative fiction, literature and related games, comics and films.
If you enjoy manga, anime, science fiction, fantasy, or horror, you’ll find plenty to entertain you at this convention.”
Check it out:

QUESTION: Any idea which day you’ll be appearing at the San Jose Con? It doesn’t say so on the website.
Lots of good ideas in here. I’ll follow up on the ones that can fit into my existing schedule.
Good news about Tulsa! I have made contact with the organizers, and we are, as they say, “In talks.”
I’ll be at Super-Con both days. I haven’t figured out how late I’ll be there on Sunday, though. Depends on if I’m driving or flying.
East Coast, West Coast… Why fight between the two? Just go straight for the best city in the midwest: Minneapolis!
We’ve got a great geek community here, and since there really isn’t anything in the neighboring states of North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa all those geeks will travel to Minneapolis to see you too! And Wisconsin geeks are *almost* as cool as Minnesota geeks so they will come see you too.
Our convention that happens around the 4th of July, CONvergence, is the best convention in the midwest! http://www.convergence-con.org
Or, you could just try to schedule a reading or something for May 2nd and fly in a day early to see Jonathan Coulton’s First of May concert…
Minneapolis is so cool that we get Coulton on the Ultimate JoCo Holy Day!

Hi Wil! I look forward to seeing you at Mysterious Galaxy in May and Comic Con in the summer! I think a get together at Comic Con for us WWDN folk would be neat! In fact, I’m pretty good at putting together flyers. If you’re so inclined, and figure out a day and time, I’d be happy to make flyers for you (gratis) to put on the freebie table. Just let me know!
Hey Wil,
I’m the Board President of a regional convention on the East Coast, and I emailed you earlier this year with no response, I would really like to talk to you about what it would take to get you to come to our con, especially since you’re sort of thinking about that right now.
Hey, Wil,
I’m so glad I have multiple opportunities to see you in San Diego. Maybe we can arrange a get together during Comic-con and merge it with the Fark folks; they usually have some sort of gathering during the con.
I second (or third) the motion of a WWDN get-together at Comic-con. I hope it’s on Saturday, that’s the only day I’ll be there.
I’m repeating myself, and I’m also “thirding” whatever has been said before–but, if you can, PLEASE come to GenCon Indy! I’m sure it would mean a lot to all of us Midwestern fans, especially those of us who will only be about an hour away from the con at that time! 😉 Plus, you can really get your game on there!
Yes, San Jose, I will be there! Wahooo.
thirding, fourthing, whatevering CONvergence in Minneapolis. Please come! I’m there every year doing live audio theatre as part of the Mark Time Awards for Science Fiction Audio (http://www.greatnorthernaudio.com/MarkTime/MarkTime-radio.html). We would love to have you play with us 😉
Please come!!
East coast? You need to be at DragonCon. Labor Day weekend, ATL. 20,000 freaks and geeks.
If you want Wil to come to DragonCon, you’ll have to move it off of PAX weekend.
So, I’m late reading this post, but YAY! you’re thinking about D*C?!?!?! It’s the only convention I attend. I have to admit that I was very disappointed by the Stargate people last year because they seemed so into themselves and like they were only there to party. I really regret not attending either of the sessions which included your friends Spiner, Frakes or McFadden. I did see de Lancie and Ms. Nichols (individually) and they were both great. Anyway, if you come this year…wow, that would just be awesome. Bring Anne and then head down to Savannah or Charleston after the convention.
I have demanded you for Dallas like a few months ago , Please swing by Texas , we have Fed Con coming and we have a boo koo of shops , I like Lone Star Comics on South Hulen street , cause they have an awesome selection and as an added bonus it’s only a half hour from my house , when the traffic’s good that is .
P.S. If you come down here to Texas I will so totally bring my Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon hat to drop or maybe the Led Zeppelin hat Molly bought me for Christmas ! Hmmmm….what to wear…what to wear. LOL
OK, Wil, I’m in the West but I don’t see you coming to Denver or Colorado Springs. Think you need to rectify that. Not really sure what cons are here but I figure Denver has to have something (besides access to good skiing :P)!!
Hey Wil, I’ll be coming all the way from Ottawa, Canada top see you at the San diego Comic Con… can’t wait to FINALLY get to meet you after 15 years of dreaming to!! Plz let me know your schedule when you can! Annie 🙂

Wil,
Had to post for the SJ area and shout out about beer goodness. There is a little hole-in-the-wall pub (much like Old Town Pub in Dena. i will shed a tear at its passing) called Trials that has cask aged ales that are oh so good and a fine selection of Single Malts.
Throwing in CONvergence in Minneapolis as well! This year will be especially awesome, but every year is a good time. Always held over July 4th weekend.
When you get out east, I’ll be there!
However, this con… just, no.
Are you gonna pop up to Vancouver while you’re this far north. I was thinking of doing a Riker’s Poker Night thing. Wouldn’t it be great to finally play in the game with the big boys??
How ’bout a stop in Portland, OR? Maybe at a Powells? The one on Hawthorne is close to beers! Belmont Station is a mere mile away…
Hey, Wil… in all seriousness, I know a gaming con in Michigan that would LOVE to have you come and just hang around and be cool… Would it be possible to find out what kind of cost that might have?
I want to run a table of D&D with you at it before I die…

Yes, I add my voice to those calling out for a Minneapolis visit.
I just read this list for the first time and boy I guess we’d better buy a couple of those awesome shirts for PAX. It would also be fun to have a WWdN game meet up (if that doesn’t just come along with the group photo…) A life goal of mine is to actually play Mario Kart DS with you! Even if I sucketh. 😛
I am up for a SD Comic Con WWdN meetup! Just post the details and I’ll be there.
Looks like you’re not doing anything in June. How about dropping by ALA Annual in Anaheim to hang with some sexy librarians? http://www.ala.org/annual
Hi Wil,
Looks like you’re not doing anything in June. How about dropping by ALA Annual in Anaheim to hang with some sexy librarians? http://www.ala.org/annual
Wil,
As head of Program Ops and PR for Westercon61 here in Las Vegas, I’m inviting you to come to the con which is from July 3rd to the 6th. Although we can’t offer much more than a membership and a maybe a table in the dealers’ room (since I’m not in charge of the dealer’s stuff, I can’t promise that but I’ll bet something could be worked out), we’d love to have you! You do have to clear the subject matter with the chairwoman in charge of programming, but I think it’s pretty safe to say that you can create whatever panel(s) you want. Although I’ve never had the opportunity to hear you give a presentation, you are a wonderful writer (I have Just a Geek), and I avidly follow this blog.
So, how about it? You up for a sojourn in the desert?
Mindy

Westercon61
By the way, I meant to say that this is my first con and I must say I’m really excited to be meeting all the fans! When I was growing up, I was the geeky outsider in the most horrible way. I grew out of some of the geekiness, or at least learned how to hide it better, and have fit into normal society fairly well. The geek factor does break out now and then (I’ve got more tech toys than my fiance does), but I truly found my fandom home here in the desert when I finally met up with other people like me: people who like computers and science fiction and can endlessly argue the merits of George Lucas and his tinkering.
Yes, I’m a geek and Proud Of It!
Mindy
Yes, yes… old thread. Yes, yes…Wil’s on vacation. Yes, yes…PAX is the same time of year as DragonCon.
But…
Please to check out the DragonCon Skeptic Panel plans!
http://www.skeptrack.org/
And many friends will be there as well.
Just sayin’…
Hey, Wil.
Have you tried to get into Dragon Con? Very nice Convention, Atlanta is very nice on Labor day weekend..IF you werent doing penny arcade expo. Think about it next year..Dragon Con would love to hear you perform from your books.
One more thing..
If you arent busy, there is a steampunk Themed Convention in Febuary of 09 called Conflation. Since you outed yourself as a fan of such, thought you would like to know about it. I DJ every night its goin on. http://www.conflation.org.
Hi! This is the first time I am making a comment on your site. I guess I am curious about something. Have you ever wrote a screenplay or ever had a desire to do that?
I would like to talk to you about being our keynote speaker at our non-profit event, Thu, Oct 9th and Fri, Oct 10th – http://www.tulsatechfest.com.
I sent you a personal email, but I’m sure you get tons or have hungry spam filters.
I would appreciate it if you could contact me.

Wil.. Where to begin.. You suffered a lot of brickbats on the Trek scene, I think it was mainly jealousy. Let’s face it, if you were already a Trek fan, the idea of being a teenager on Enterprise is just too good to be true. Value that experience, Wesley Crusher. No one can take that away from you.
Anyway, you seem to have survived the experience with class and some measure of distinction, and life goes on.. If it were up to me, I’d do a new Trek series with CAPTAIN Wesley Crusher commanding, perhaps a PROMETHEUS class vessel. Just a thought.. Safe Journey, Wil.
You should consider coming to TX for Wizard World –> http://www.wizardworld.com/home-tx.html
Good time to had by all, plus if you come I will totally pick up your bar tab one night 😉
Wil,
Are you interested in spending Halloween in Las Vegas? Tabletop gaming AND Poker? What a combination! We’d love to bring you in for Neoncon 2008. You can play, GM or just hang out. I have posted on Eventful a while back and got no response. So, I am not sure it worked as intended.
In any case, let me know if you are interested and we’ll go from there.
Thanks,
Doug
