50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

see the sky, the burning rain

  • WWdN in Exile

I’ve had a skull-crushing headache almost all week. It moves all around the front of my face, but it’s most persistent and most severe around and above my left eye.

It’s gotten so bad and so miserable, I called my doctor yesterday because I was worried about something Very Bad happening in my sinuses. Maybe I tried to do too much too soon, or maybe I have a small dwarf or elf living in there, I thought.

He thinks I may have pushed it too hard, so I’m back to minimal activity for the next five days. This timing is great, because we’re supposed to have nice weather all weekend, and I have a stack of comic books that I can take with me to the patio.

Reading the Absolute Dark Knight reactivated my Batmania, so I picked up Matt Wagner’s Batman and the Monsters and Batman and the Mad Monk. I also picked up the second TPB of Y: The Last Man, and the 4th TPB of Fables (I thought I’d read more of both of those, but apparently my brain was in my other pants at the time.) I’ve also got Doktor Sleepless, Black Summer, and Desolation Jones, because you can never have too much Internet Jesus while you’re taking antibiotics with side effects that (rarely but severely) include confusion, hallucinations, and nightmares.

For the moment, though, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, U2 is in heavy rotation on Airtunes*, and there’s an empty seat on the other side of the wall with my name on it.

Enjoy the weekend, wherever you are. If you’re in the US, don’t forget that our idiot government decided to make Daylight Savings time start a month early — tonight Saturday night / Sunday morning. Spring forward for great justice!

*Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, and B-sides from the 80s FTW.

oh you’re mean. you’re a mean mean man!
(as I’ve said a previous comments) I grew up in the LA region (Thousand Oaks to be exact) and the weather (as I look back today) was perfect. Beautiful sunny warm weather. And no bugs, the bugs thing is big.
Today, March freakin 7th, I’m sitting here on the first day of my first Spring break in Graduate school starting out the window as crappy crappy snow relentlessly pours down on us. It’s the icy, cold, gets everywhere snow too. My birthday is tomorrow, and it’s snowing! POOP. There are icicles hanging down from my window ledge, and I just want to see the sun. Tell me, what is sunlight like? It’s been so long I’m starting to forget.
    Sometimes I hate Indiana.
(and I hope your head feels better! I do pay attention before I go off on my wild tangents, really I do)

Unforgettable Fire is my favourite U2 album.
It is so unfocused, so murky.

I *love* daylight savings time! It makes me feel like I have more time.

I live over in Orange County and, yes, the weather has been awesome. Perfect gardening weather.
Also, there’s a flu going around my office (which I just got yesturday, thank you) that starts out as a migrane headache and lasts for about a week. Maybe you just picked up a touch of ‘what’s going around’?

Sorry. It is one of those things that jumps out at me whenever I see it.
Hope you head feels better. It is going to be a great weekend here in OC.

Ugh! I forgot about the change in daylight savings. I thought I had a couple of weeks before missing that hour of sleep. 🙁
kristinalead-not sure where you are Canada-wise but I live very close to the border and travel to the US on a weekly bases (They have things we don’t-like Trader Joes!). It would totally mess me up if they were on a different time than us.
    -Just my $0.02 😉

Here’s something to do while you are valiantly pursuing The Nothing.
    http://www.proposition317.com
Basically, Guinness is trying to turn St. Patrick’s Day into a national holiday and they’re collecting signatures.
Came across it in my travels and for some odd reason, i thought this might appeal to you.

Hey Wil, I think you might be interested in a very good Audiobook listen. Steve Martin’s “Born Standing Up”….read by Steve. I just listened for a second time and thought of you for some reason. I think you’d really enjoy it….and it’s a relaxing activity to boot….with your headache and all.

Wil, you’ve got to get through Fables and Y!
Book 10 of Fables and the last book of Y: The Last Man (also number 10) are both coming out in June.

Strange that you mention strangely dancing sinuses. This is the first year EVER in my 37 years that I’ve had pain in my sinuses – so much so that it stretched out over a month as the holidays came and went. I didn’t have pain for more than a few days, but the “stuffiness in the nasal area” was – well, frankly it was like the “Cling-ons on Planet Platex” from the old school Bloom County Days – just not a lot of fun.
I also wanted to say thanks for the reminder of how great U2 is. I originally got this cool Rattle and Hum mini import CD from a second hand record store in Milwaukee and still have it to this day. I also just got the HD-DVD of Rattle and Hum with my (bastards!) Toshiba HD-DVD player as one of the free 5.
Good times and hope that you feel better, Wil. Cheers!

because you can never have too much Internet Jesus while you’re taking antibiotics with side effects that (rarely but severely) include confusion, hallucinations, and nightmares.
The first time I went to Peru to do field work, the folks at the friendly neighborhood travel vaccination clinic were trying to convince me to get a course of anti-malarial drugs. (They were dubious about my claims that I was headed for one of the driest deserts on earth and therefore unlikely to run into any Anopheles.) They were reading off the lenghty list of side effects. “Psychotic break” didn’t faze me, but “unusually vivid, often violent dreams” was a deal breaker. As my Aunt Flo (yes, I have a literal Aunt Flo) once said, “I go to the movies every night.”
Having just, finally, shaken a week-long headache of my own, I wish you luck.

This is obviously some sort of plot to keep you from the sweet, sweet Guinness. Probably the British again — first they drive Alan Moore insane with cheap NHS hallucinogens, and now this.
Seriously, though, don’t get discouraged — they just rebuilt your head, and now you’re on the shakedown cruise. The great thing about reading is that you can do it with one eye closed…

BTW–on a totally different thread–what do you think about this move to clean up language in South Pasadena? It’s being spearheaded by the grandson of Orrin Hatch, whose parents live in S. Pasadena. I think it’s a F*&^ed up mess and a bunch of Bull@#$%, myself.

I’ve just gotten started on Y: The Last Man — I’m up to Book 3 so far, and loving the hell out of it despite my occasional desire to slap Yorick upside the head for being, well, an idiot.
Then again, he’s young and in love — idiocy comes with the territory.

Wil, ya big dope. You’re probably only one of a few people who could screw up a “do nothing” edict.
*I* am another of those nuts who, when faced with the apparently horrible idea of relaxing during recovery, goes overboard the other way…which is why I feel that I can point and laugh like Nelson.
Seriously though, STOP IT. Your health is important – everything else can wait. Make it so.

Now go hang out and suck back some more. It does a body good.

Enjoy the sunshine as much as you can! We are really hoping for spring weather soon here in Ohio. The snow dumped on us so much yesterday, I had to shovel the driveway and front walk–twice. And, I hate daylight saving time in the spring. My already “late” wake-up time of 8:00 (I wake up with my 19 month old son) will seem even later until we can readjust ourselves. Yeah, I’m not too bitter, today.
Anyway, I do hope you start feeling better soon.

Welcome to the wonderful world of sinus surgery.
Hey Wil, drop me a line one of these days with a way to contact you. I have responded to your last message to me, several times via several providers, and have yet to hear anything back.
I suspect I may be a victim of your spam filters.

Fortunately for those of us in Hawaii, we said “NO” to Daylight Savings.

This is OT, but I was dropping my 2 year old off at the sitter this morning and my sitter was watching a movie on Lifetime Movie Network. Lo and behold, there was Wil! I think it was The Girls’ Room because I thought I saw Soleil Moon Frye. That just made my morning!

Ahhh, comic books. While I’ve since not really kept up, I do remember one of my prouder childhood moments being the time I had a fan letter published in Venom: The Madness #3. I found out about it when a kid from Jersey used it to write me, which was cool…
Totally OT but terribly funny, dunno if you caught this on Fark’s Geek Tab or not, but Facebunk’s Child CEO/Founder got wailed upon by the masses at the SXSW keynote. Makes you King of the Keynotes, I’d wager…

I love daylight saving. It’s the switching back and forth I really hate. We should just keep DST all year. I love that it’s not dark on the drive home from work and that there is still sunlight when I get there. It allows us to have dinner outside, play with the kids outside before they go to bed, etc. Sounds like a win to me.

solace, I’m below the 49th parallel, but haven’t been to the US for about 18 years. I think it’s that I agree with roger – I don’t like the switching back and forth. Why can’t we just stay on daylight savings? It would make so much more sense…
