50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Happiest first printing is nearly sold out!

  • Books

When I went to pack up a bunch of Happiest Days orders this morning, I realized that this totally awesome tower of books, representing much of the first printing, has been reduced to just three boxes, and one of those is only half full. I’m probably going to have to order a second printing for the great Geek Tour of 2008.

Thank you, so much, to everyone who has bought Happiest Days, talked about Happiest Days on your blogs or Live Journals or wherever you make your home online. Thank you to everyone who slipped it into conversation with friends, families and random hobos, and to everyone who has supported me and my work. Thank you for believing in me and supporting me. I don’t have a publicist or a big marketing budget or any traditional mainstream support in print or electronic media . . . but I’ve never felt like I’m doing this all by myself.

Just curious. Have you ever thought about selling the book on Amazon.com?
They now allow some outside vendors.

Ha-HA! I just bought mine. Been meaning to do that for a while now.
    I can’t wait :D!

Congrats, Wil! No surprise to me that you’ve almost sold out, but I won’t remind you of that for fear you’ll lose your genuine surprise about your success which makes you so endearing. 😉
For those of us who live nowhere near the stops of Geek Tour of 2008, would you consider online sales of autographed copies of your paperback books like you did with the hardcovers? I’ve been wanting to get one for my cousin, but I keep holding out in the hopes that you might consider this. He’d love the book, but he’d be ecstatic to have a signed copy of it.

You’re definitely not alone. You have plenty of people out there who love you. You’re my hero. You’re a regular guy who isn’t afraid to put himself out there on the Internet. You adore your family. You embrace your geekiness. You write well, and you’re very funny. What’s not to love?

I finally got around to ordering this, and when I did, I discovered a forgotten $20 balance in PayPal. So basically, free book for me.
    Looking forward to reading it.

Any chance you might be able to schedule a Geek Tour 2008 event somewhere near the American Library Association conference in Anaheim, June 26 – July 2? It should draw some Eastern geeks westward (and some of us even buy books for a living…)
Sidebar: I told my wife that I was going to invite Wil Wheaton to the American Library Conference, and that somehow that was not the most geeky sentence I’ve ever said.
She asked me to prove it.

Ahh…I am so looking forward to splurging on books on the next paycheck I’ll have enough to put aside to spoil myself on…your three are right around the top of the list.
In addition to being someone I greatly admire, you will always remind me of pumpkin bowling. Pumpkin bowling is a game my hubby came up with when he was a teenager…much like mailbox baseball, except the boys threw pumpkins at the mailboxes instead of bashing them with baseball bats.
That idea was inspired by the mailbox baseball scene in Stand By Me. You may not have been in that scene, but since you are the first one I think of when I think of that movie. Because of that, you are now linked to the image of pumpkin guts and mailbox corpses strewn all over a country road, left behind by a van full of giggling teenage boys.
How’s that for a backhanded complement? Keep livin’ and workin’ the way you know best. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Wil,
Grab a few copies and put them aside in a safe place. I gave away my last clean copy of the first printing of my book without realizing it. I later discovered that my only copy was the dogeared one I used to show interviewers and use for a prop; my boxes of books only had second editions.
Years later I got another clean copy by inheriting it back. [that was a dichotomous moment.]

I was waiting to get one from you at the San Diego Comic Con because I wanted to get it in person. Guess I’ll have to pay the shipping now to get a first edition. My friends will have to settle on a 2nd edition copy.

Forgot to ask: Wil, why isn’t there a media kit for Happiest Days? I don’t like making my own promotional material because I don’t want to misrepresent you. Even when someone gives permission to make fan promotional items, I make sure to put somewhere that it’s fan created so people don’t think the actor made it up since I’m pretty awful in designing anything.
I copied your flyer for Dancing Barefoot and distributed them at several conventions, but I haven’t been able to that with your latest book.

Sorry for so many posts, but I just found out that actor Stanley Kamel has passed away. He was best known lately as the psychiatrist on Monk. He was also in the Next Gen episode, “Where No One Has One Before” (where we first met the Traveler) as Kosinski, the propulsion expert.
Mr. Kamel was the kind of character actor that enriched any production he was in. He was always so real. You never thought he was playing a part.
Mr. Kamel starred in “The Urn”, a movie that had a limited engagement release just last month in L.A. Trek alumnus Armin Shimerman appears in the film. You can see clips of the movie here.

First time commenting! I’ve been reading your site for a few months now. This week I’m going to take the plunge and order a copy of Happiest. [shameless begging] Maybe you could make an autographed batch available, to celebrate this momentous occasion?[/shameless begging]
It’s nice to find a blog on the net that talks about things that are interesting, without the writer being a super douche. Thank you for sharing your life with us Wil.

Wil, you deserve every ounce of praise and shiny gold rocks you get for Happiest Days. I loved it myself and I’ve been talking it up among my own geek circles. Making it to a second printing is awesome! I can say that I proudly own a 1st edition!

PS – did you check out the Laurie Anderson video on IO9 today? Choice Goodness!!!

Hmm I totally spaced this one (as in spaced out, not putting in the airlock), I was hoping to go to the Festival of Books at UCLA to get Just a Geek signed, and would love to get this one done too.
If I order now would I get it in time (Just over 2 weeks away) or is there another way I could get it between now and then? Will it be available there?

I was tooling around Mexico City last week, and it was riding on the metro, letting my mind wander that I had this thought “I think I’m a hard core Wil Wheaton fan. If I ever bump into him, I can say ‘Hi Wil, I’m a hard core Wil Wheaton fan- I own all your stuff, including two copies of Just a Geek.'” And as that was running through my head, I realized that I didn’t own a copy of Happiest Days. So I wasn’t really doing my part to be a part of that sustaining 1000 or so that you need. Frankly, I forgot about it until just now reading this post. So I hopped on over and ordered me a copy.
Let me tell you something else while I’m here going on. Also while in Mexico city I saw a huge banner for Vans shoes with artwork for Iron Maiden’s The Trooper on them. At a metro stop I saw a guy wearing a pair with the cover artwork from Killers on it. How cool is that? I didn’t even know Vans made Iron Maiden shoes.

Yay! How cool is it that your 1st printing is almost sold out?! Very cool. Well done, you! I’d promote it more but there’s no media kit (which is understandable as you’re busy) and my fiance already refers to me as “WWdN’s unofficial volunteer publicist” enough as it is. Hey, if the conversation with the clerk at the bookstore/coffee shop/bank/restaurant leads itself to discuss geeky books and a reference to WWdN and books just happens to fall out of my mouth there’s nothing wrong with that, eh? Eh?! I think not.
Again, congratulations, Wil! Looking forward to seeing you somewhere on the Geek Tour 2008 and I look forward to the post where you say the 2nd printing is sold out. 🙂

Ditto on the congrats Wil. On our side, it’s fantastic to be able to enjoy a slightly more personal connection with those that inspire and entertain us.
In most cases, the money we spend and the word-of-mouth we share as individuals has little or no impact on those that benefit from it. But in this case, I take some satisfaction in thinking that each of us had a small, but tangible impact on your sense of success, and that we’re providing incentive for you to keep it up!

Funny story, I was reading my limited edition, numbered and signed, hardcover edition at my fiance’s house and I came out of the bedroom crying. He asked me what was wrong and I told him I was reading the story about Felix and it is so beautiful that it makes me cry every time I read it. His response, “As long as it was Wil that made you cry and not me”. I just had to laugh 🙂

Okay, Wil. I took the plunge. I am OUTRAGED that I had to pay an extra penny just because I’m Canadian… but I’m willing to overlook that (maybe). I like your writing style here and I look forward to discovering your book.
    Thanks.

Congrats on your continued success and here’s to many more. Any chance you will be at BEA in LA this summer with Tokyopop? If not, you should ask them about it. Hope to see you there.

    Hey Wil,
Greetings from Ukraine! I finally received The Happiest Days on Wednesday, plowed through it with a nostalgic smile on my face over the past 2 days. Lots of good stuff in there. Thanks, although now I feel the urge to purchase Just a Geek.
I finished your book in a coffee house here in Kyiv, got in my car with an old mixtape playing…B.A.D. II followed by “The Constitutional Peasant” skit, created circa 1991-92, and thought it was the perfect coda for finishing your book.
I’ve been having a good time introducing my almost 3 year old son to the joys of geekitude, mainly superheroes (reawakening my own enthusiasm for the comics…if you haven’t checked out Comic Geek Speak, you must!). I am anxiously awaiting his mother’s clearance to sit him down to Star Wars (the original, of course!)

Wil, just finished reading Happiest Days as well as Dancing barefoot. Loved them both, and I find it very much “lolz” that you turned out to be such an awesome author after your hillariously ironic line in Stand By Me in which you declared how writing was stupid.
Look forward to seeing you at PAX again, keep up the good work.

So Mr. Wheaton, how does it feel to be the only one surprised about the sell out? I do believe (you folks out there correct me if I am wrong) everyone on the readers side of the blog knew it was going to sell out long before the boxes showed up at your warehouse. When one writes well, is interesting, and is a true human being, then one does not need a million dollar ad campain to convince us to lap up your words. The words alone convince us to lap up the words and come back looking for any left over crumbs. Again Wil, congratulations and I wait for the next blog where you are surprised that your next book has sold out. I am getting up in years so do not make me wait too long. Bill Mann
