Radio Free Burrito Episode 11

  • Podcast

Holy crap!

Look out the window for restless horsemen . . . it’s a new episode of Radio Free Burrito, less than a week after the last one!

Show Notes

  • I think we should just go ahead and give this podcast the [Explicit] label, if it doesn’t have it already. Consider yourself warned.
  • The logo was designed by WWdN:iX reader Marc, who asked that I not link to his "in progress" website. Thanks, Marc!
  • Episode X let me get my podcasting legs back, so I felt much better with this one, even when I had to stall while trying to splat-tab into Firefox, where I saw that I hadn’t pre-loaded my blog. Whoops.
  • I put chapters, links, and images in this one. Yay!
  • The full Code of Honor review isn’t up yet, but you can read all of my TNG Reviews at TV Squad if you haven’t already.
  • When I mentioned all the great blogs at Wired that people may not know about, I forgot to mention GeekDad. It’s not because I don’t think it’s a great blog, but because I took for granted that everyone reads it already. I also mentioned Underwire, Listening Post and Threat Level.
  • Here’s the offending Alt Text column. Here’s my Tweet. Here’s my facepalm.
  • You know you want to learn more about fabulous Palm Springs.
  • Brad Sucks does not suck. You can listen to the album I Don’t Know What I’m Doing at Magnatune.
  • Mister Bungle is a shame, because he spoils lunchtime.
  • I really do appreciate feedback; it makes me feel like I’m not broadcasting into an empty box.
  • Radio Free Burrito is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 License.
  • This show is 18 minutes long, and weighs in at 16.6 MB.
  • As always, let me know if you decide to mirror the show, and I’ll update this post.

Thanks for listening!

I haven’t listened to episode 11 yet, but I really liked 10. Very good music to program to; interesting and lends itself to concentration.

Wil, fantastic RFB episode as usual. I laughed my geeky ass off at the “Code of Honor” review, keep up the excellent work.
Not to be a pain in the ass, but I was wondering if you got a chance to read the email I sent you a little while back, concerning a comedy sketch performed as a tribute to you.

“Of all the times in the world to drag your annoying little wunderkind up here you picked NOW?”
Sorry, I got a little worked up there. Funny stuff. It’s got to be hard to make Code of Honor interesting — it really was the worst episode.
These half talking half music RFB casts are hella awesome. This time I listened to RFB while my fiance was in the room and he was laughing and enjoying the music, too. He says he enjoyed the last two RFB and that your rants are funny and you’re very entertaining. So, you know, it must be true, or something. 🙂
Anyway, these are great and you should do more of them, even if you just have a free hour to squeeze one out in. Cheers!

Lovin’ it and loving the review and music mix a lot.
I joined e-music to find new stuff I’d never find otherwise and am liking RFB for the same reason. Way better than just translucent-channel stuff over & over.

    Wil,
I had a great time listening to this.. I’m just miffed I didn’t get here in time to mirror it… The cat seemed to especially enjoy it, although he’s miffed he didn’t get to meet your cat..

  14. nickb says:

Oh, the cat really didn’t seem to care either way, I’m just exercising my rights as their ownee to put words in their mouth. But I’m sure he would like to meet your cat still..

Wow. This is the very first time I’ve ever visited your site. Won’t be the last.
You might find this amusing: your whole broadcast was made doubly funny by the fact that I’m so used (sorry) to you being Wesley. Part of me was like, “Whoa—Wesley’s cursing?! Whoa—there he goes, he’s cursing again! Ohhh…Oh, yeah, he’s grown up now, isn’t he?”
TNG was my like my religion when I was a little girl, so I actually do remember Code of Honor, and the impression of the always proper and honorable Captain Piccard really struck a chord with me. Brilliant.
Seriously, man—how do you find the time to do all this? I heard you say you were up until 4a.m.—is that the secret? I really would like to know, if you don’t mind sharing. For me, it’s a fight. Between laundry, dishes, working, getting groceries, straightening my hair, working again, and a few other household chores I won’t mention because it might be too boring, it’s just plain difficult to find time to reflect and be creative. (For me, anyway).
Glad to know you still exist. 🙂 I’m really psyched about exploring the site and hearing more from you on the Radio Free Burritto.

    It’s not my birthday.
And yet, you keep giving me these wonderful gifts!
Thank you for a hi-frackin-larious commute!
Perfect balance in this one, song, review, humor, some more humor, references… I love it.

Oh man, that’s good stuff right there! What WERE the writers thinking?!? Gold!
You know, I have a copy of the original RFB. Remember that one? The iPod formatted nightmare chubbo file? Yeah, I have that monster. LOL I couldn’t wait for the MP3 conversion back then, and by the time we all figured it out, it was 85% down. Ahhh, memories. We will enjoy them…
Anyway, I have a Karaoke contest to prepare for, so wish me luck. Thanks for the Burrito Fix, Wil!

Beavis and Butthead, South Park, Monty Python…I had to listen to it a second time to figure it out. It’s like a snapshot…you hear the narrator’s thoughts, music he’s listening to, plus little tidbits of pop culture…all wrapped up in a burrito. Neat.
Dude, I must have been living under a rock to miss this site for so long!

ME, TOO – to all of the above. Actually, I finally got the tears of laughter to ebb enough, after listening to Honor, to read and type again. And I got quite the abdominal workout. Thank You, Wil!
On a sad note, I am extremely disappointed that I will not be able to have a brew with you in Escondido next weekend. Many, many puzzle pieces fell into place – except one. Maybe next time. . . – g^2

Loved it! I was riding in a bus when the rant about the writers started and had to muffle myself so that people didn’t start wanting to call security on me…
BTW the ITunes version only lasts 14 min 48 secs. I’ll download from here now so I can hear the rest as I want to hear the takedown of Alt-Text Whiny guy.
BTW your voice was a lot deeper on the podcast than I expected (I am basing this on your Richard Burns character from GTA:SA, not on Wesley).

  34. FirstPersonShow.net Kevin says:

What’s this you say about chapters links & images? I know you’re a real cool geek but I don’t think MP3’s can have more than just album art…
I thought it was stuff created on a Mac that supported chapters and embedded images in the audio.
fans wanna know watcha meant, bro!

Short, shameful confession: This is the first Radio Free Burrito podcast I’ve listened to, though it certainly won’t be the last.
Amidst the sustained chuckling and admiration for its general awesomeness, there’s a small part of my brain that won’t stop reeling, not having heard your voice for at least a decade.
It’s all the more acute because you don’t really look very different, while your voice has deepened a bit, gaining a richer timbre. The resulting cognitive dissonance — “OMFG he sounds totally unlike Wesley!” — threatens to make my head explode, in an entirely good way.
I can’t be the first person to have that reaction. Am I?

  37. Matt says:

Dude, I’m a bit late to the party, but I’ve got to offer some constructive criticism.
Don’t you think you were a bit hard on the Wired author? From what I heard you had two complaints: 1. You felt that Sjöberg’s thesis was “Twitter is totally lame… and by extension all the people who engage in [Twitter] are lame.” A viewpoint you consider “Twitter-hating.” And 2. He took your B52’s quote out of context.
On the first – from reading the article I don’t think he’s Twitter-hating at all. I think he is “BAD Twitter-hating.” Look at it this way… Say I listened to your Code of Honor review and *didn’t* know you were Space-Nerd Wil Wheaton. I’d think you HATED Star Trek! You weren’t just making jokes about the episode… you were plain nasty! (Which is fine, by the way… I thought the review was hilarious. But back to the point.)
But in the context of knowing who you are, and knowing the intent of your reviews, I know that you don’t hate Star Trek… you hate BAD Star Trek. In particular, badly written Star Trek. Same thing goes with Alt Text… Sjöberg doesn’t seem to hate Twitter – check his profile – he’s downright verbose on the thing. He’s expressing the view that there is quite a bit of chaff in with the wheat.
That and the fact he’s a humorist/”sarcast.” And a damn fine geek, at that. So cut a little slack.
On the second point, I’ll grant he took your tweet out of context to make a joke. But not so much that you’ve got to be a dick about it.
That’s my whole take on this, really. Listen to your own advice, buddy, and “Don’t be a dick!” We love you, Wil. Stay good.
    Stay good!
