Radio Free Burrito Episode X

  • Podcast

Holy crap! It’s a new episode of Radio Free Burrito!

This is another music episode, focusing on three styles I really like: Rockabilly, Psychobilly, and Surf.

I found a ton of great artists on the podsafe music network, and I hope you enjoy the musical stylings they provide.

Show notes:

  • The logo was designed by WWdN:iX reader Marc, who asked that I not link to his "in progress" website. Thanks, Marc!
  • I had a good time with this one, though to be completely honest, I
wasn’t entirely comfortable with the sound of my own voice and I think
that comes through a little bit.
  • I drop at least one F-bomb in this show, so you probably shouldn’t listen to it around little kids, people with sensitive ears, or at work. Especially if you work in a daycare for kids with sensitive ears. (Hi, Norma!)
  • I didn’t bother with chapters and all that for this one. It’s been so long since I did one of these, I just needed to get my podcasting legs back and I didn’t feel that it was worth the extra effort.
  • I played music from these awesome artists:
  • Thee Merry Widows
  • The Marauders
  • Horrorpops
  • Jukebox Sinners
  • B-Sea Surfers
  • Big John Bates (I incorrectly back announced his song as Super Chrome. It is, in fact, Super Chrome Deluxe, which is even better. I regret the error.)
  • Ronnie and His Twangin’ Little Fellow
  • The show is 27.9MB and runs just over 30 minutes.
  • Radio Free Burrito is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 License.
  • Podshow wants me to say "Some of the music provided tonight from the PodShow Podsafe Music Network. Check it out at ‘music.podshow.com’" I don’t think I said those exact words in that exact order in the show, because I’m stupid and I just noticed that right this second. But I know they were all in there, and I’ll be sure to say the fucking words correctly next time, Mister White.
  • Finally, I want to thank all the artists and labels who are participating in the podsafe music network. I hope this exposes your music to new listeners and you’re all buying mansions and yachts before the next full moon.

If you can provide a mirror, let me know in the comments and I’ll update this post.

Thanks for listening!

    Hurray for Psychobilly!
Have you ever listened to any Tiger Army? I had almost totally forgotten how much I liked rockabilly and psychobilly. Thanks for the reminder. Time to go dig up some old CDs.

For some reason the last two tracks are silent on the mp3.

  8. StAlia says:
    21 April, 2008 at 9:17 pm

I also don’t hear the last two tracks.
There’s nothing between “you want to hear more surf music?” and “from beautiful BC…” and between then between announcing “Surfin’ Fuzz” and “that was tight”. There’s the space for a song in both cases, but I just get silence.

  9. Wil says:
    21 April, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Yep, I’m lame. I had those tracks muted when I did the mixdown.
Oops! I’m fixing it right now.

Looking forward to listening. I love Surf Rock (and Rockabilly)… easily 25% of my iTunes/iPod is devoted to those genres. I see some artists in your list I’m not familiar with though so this should be good.

So far only about a fifth of the way through it, and this is made of win and awesome. Reminds me of the glory days of getting Pandora up here in the Great White North, when I’d hear all sorts of cool music I’d never otherwise hear. This is wicked.
By the way, there’s no such as nerding up the music by talking about the music. It’s really a very Canadian habit, especially at concerts. It’s not nerding it up, it’s bantering with your audience! Just because we can’t respond doesn’t mean we don’t like it.
    Huzzah for the shopkeep!

How did I miss that Wils music-podcasting? Damn, I need to get another 4am together this week or next. Episode X includes the Horrorpops and Big John Bates.

  22. Colonel Dave says:
    22 April, 2008 at 8:38 am

So, that was “Surf”, was it? Now, I’ve certainly heard the style of music before – and enjoyed it – but I never knew what the genre was called. Now, in addition to thoroughly enjoying each song you selected, Wil, I have learned was “Surf” music is and, also, that some of it comes from Canada, where surfing would be, in my non-expert opion, terminated by rocks very much larger than grains of sand.
I’m going to have to go through your previous podcasts, ’cause this one was just so darned entertaining and you *totally* remind me of the taped radio broadcasts I made when I was a kid.
Finally, hearing your non-stuidio-recorded voice makes me think that you’ve stolen my voice, or, at least, borrow it a lot without my permission. Stop it.

As a movie buff and graphic artist I love old logos. The new logo for radio free burrito is a replica of the old RKO movie logo. Here is a link to the history of the logo and the artist linwood dunn. http://www.hollywoodlostandfound.net/stories/studiologos/page4.html
Now if you could get the globe to spin and the beeping sound Kool…

You might enjoy my local boys, Cigar Store Indians. Seen’em more times than I’ve seen just about anybody
Some of their stuff may be a little rootsy in places, but there is some great rockabilly in there, too.

Have you ever seen the Horrorpops live? I HIGHLY recommend them; they always put on a fun, rockin’ show.

    Hi Wil,
I loved your podcast and will listen in the future!
For some funky Japanese surf type music you should listen to Go!Go!7188 they are pretty cool. 🙂

    uh…Wil?
The way you said “I will be in *touch*” kinda creeped me out. Podcast was cool, but I wouldn’t complain if it were less music and more you!

Wil, you need your own radio show. You should send your RFB show to Indie 103.1 and see if they’ll talk to you. I’d totally listen. They’re all about giving celebs radio shows. It’d be worth a shot!

    1) love the music…one of my favorite genres.
    2) you sound great.
    3) ROTFL…”of course I rolled a 2 on a D4″
    4) keep up the great work.

Heh. NRFB. NEVER REMOVE FROM BOX!
This is the shizzle right here. Think I’ll burn it to CD and listen on the way to work tonight. Thanks, Wil! Last mixtape show was awesome, and I’m sure this won’t disappoint…

    Hi, Wil.
I’m really liking your eclecticism. You should check out The Sounds in my Head. Daniel includes a mix of old and new in a variety of genres, with the emphasis heavily on stuff that you’re unlikely to hear anywhere else. When he plays a track from a CD, he often gives his rating of the other songs on the disc as well, so you have a heads-up on whether to pick out the one track or do an album-buy.
He also punctuates some of the breaks with quotes from current comedic commentary, such as Bill Maher’s “New Rule” bits or The Daily Show. I think you’ll enjoy it.

I just finally listened to RFB10. Dude, awesome! I definitely have to check out some of those bands. Surf music? From Latvia? Double bonus. (Surf music FTW!)
Dude, and you’re funny! Very funny. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard you be that funny vocally. (And by that it’s been a long time since you’ve released a RFB. But this is probably the funniest one that I can remember.) This was a great listen and I’m going to go bug all my friends to listen.
    P.S. I could totally hear the d4 roll. 🙂

Sweeet! Good to have the podcast back. I really enjoy your banter as much as the music. Have you considered using the p-cast as an outlet for your sketch comedy? It’s what I and many others do for creative fun. Also a great place to do readings of short stories (you’re quite good at those. read a ficlet or three), and while I’m on the subject; that live performance of the STNG review you posted a while back was ten times the win of the already hee-larry-us written version. Spoken word versions of the reviews would just about define the parameters of an awesome podcast. I’m talking loads of listeners and iTunes top page ratings and such…
    Just a thought.
