50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

the secret life of wheatons

  • WWdN in Exile

And now, via reprinted text messages, a glimpse into the private lives of a geek, his wife, and their son:

Anne: Michelle was late, so I’m going to be at work longer than I thought. See you guys sometime around 9.

Me: Somehow, someway, between Battlestar Galactica, NHL playoffs, and Rock Band, we will find the strength to survive until you make it home.

For the record, it was Battlestar Galactica. BSG pre-dates TiVo in our house, so we’ve been DVD viewers until this season. TiVo is storing season 4 for us while we devour — and thoroughly enjoy — season 3. Also for the record, Nolan and I survived just fine until Anne got home. So say we all.

Note to grammar nazis: I know that technically between should be among.
Note to those who would deliver spoilers: Unless you really enjoy getting the cockpunch, don’t even think about it. I am not frakking around.

Battlestar… Yummmm. What a particularly fine thing to do while waiting for your nearest and dearest to come home ! And those of us far away (Australia) who are soooo wanting to see Season 4 are drooling with envy

I’m on the East Coast staying up late finishing final papers for stupid college classes and I always check my e-mail, facebook and your blog throughout the night because for some reason I feel like things between 2:20 in the morning and 2:40 in the morning will change on the internet. So the fact that you posted pretty much made my night. I’m glad you survived and had fun with Nolan.
So thanks Wil for aiding me in my homework procrastination.

I keep hearing people talk about Battlestar Galactica… I guess I better give it a whirl sometime and see what the fuss is all about.

I highly recommend the Bear McCreary and the music of Battlestar Galactica show at the Roxy tomorrow night (4/15). I went to Sunday’s show and it was fantastic!

Was last night in the NHL not off the hook?
I can’t believe what’s happening to Ottawa. (I mean, as a Leafs fan, I’m certainly -enjoying- it, but I never dreamed they’d fold like this.)

Wil, posts like this are why I read you in the first place. You’re awesome. 🙂
And yeah, BSG is incredible. Thank goodness for DVR. I can’t believe this is the last season. *whimper*

BSG’s naturalistic approach to sci-fi is really awesome.
One could of course make a remark about the show lacking a young Crusher character but let’s not 🙂

I could enjoy watching BSG more if it didn’t remind of how much they took from Firefly style wise, which then makes me bitter that Firefly was given the shaft.

Hi, Wil. I’ve been away from this blog for quite a while, busy in my masters program (Creative Writing, so I could someday kick your a.) I read this post just when I had to deliver a homework: Dialogs. Thanks! It was wonderful as always to read you. I feel like I haven’t been away, just what happens with the friends we love when we’re apart for too long.
    Best wishes.

I had always wanted to catch the series, but I unfortunately wasn’t in the loop until the middle of season 2 Since I couldn’t bring myself into the middle of the series and I couldn’t afford the DVDs I haven’t really seen the show…until now. SciFi ran a week long 10hr day marathon before the start of season 4. I have been watching the show (which they started at episode 3 so I was a little lost at first). I have watched 2-4 episodes a night with my brother and am now at the end of season 2. I love the frakking show. It is the best. I can’t wait to get caught up and start with season 4 which is stored with the rest of the episodes on my poor DVR box (the marathon took up most of my available space).

From the guy who created Guitar Hero – http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/246
Tod Machover of MIT’s Media Lab invented the musical technology behind Guitar Hero, and at TED2008 he talks about what’s coming next. Listen for some brand-new ways to interface with music — to play it, compose it, understand it. In the second half of this talk, Machover introduces Dan Ellsey, a composer with cerebral palsy who uses the lab’s tools to create and perform his own music. Ellsey conducts his own piece, “My Eagle Song.”
It has so much awesome that I knew I had to pass it on.

Hi. I’m new to your blog.
You will love Season 4 when you get to it. I can’t wait for it to be Friday night again so I can see what happens next.
To the person in Australia who is dying to see Season 4: You can visit hulu.com and see the first two episodes via the web. The quality is actually pretty good.
Also, scifi.com has been showing the new episodes on the web Fridays at noon EDT. You can catch that night’s episode only the one time.

Well stoolpigeon, I agree with you about how good Firefly was but here’s some tidbits that may help you move on to BSG.
Joss Whedon likes BSG so much he was a major part of one of the BSG specials. He clearly loves the show and says that his wife gets mad at him because he now likes to answer his phone with “Whedon Actual”.

BSG, aka GalactaCrack, has been awesome! I think of the FireFly “rip off” aspect as more of a tribute. We should be glad there is just a little bit of space cowboy left in the ‘verse.
I was reluctant to even check out BSG at first because I was a huge fan of the original as a kid. Now i can not even watch the old ones because the Starbuck is just so damn cool!
I do not have Tivo…. but SciFi’s website shows recent episodes every Saturday! w00t!
Love the blog, Wil, love the Tweets.
    Live long and perspire!

My fiance and I are also watching Season 3 on DVD and recording Season 4 as it airs. You’d think SciFi would get a clue and release the DVDs in time for the populous to catch up with the show and watch it as it airs. But no, that would make sense.

Between is fine according to this site of Non-Errors:
    http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/nonerrors.html
Using “between” for only two, “among” for more:
The “-tween” in “between” is clearly linked to the number two; but, as the Oxford English Dictionary notes, “In all senses, between has, from its earliest appearance, been extended to more than two.” We’re talking about Anglo-Saxon here—early. Pedants have labored to enforce “among” when there are three or more objects under discussion, but largely in vain. Even the pickiest speaker does not naturally say, “A treaty has been negotiated among England, France, and Germany.”

Make sure you don’t watch Razor until AFTER finishing season 3.
I know some people were confused because Razor was released on DVD before S3 was.

I’m a southeastern girl and my team didn’t make the NHL playoffs this year (blew it in the last 3 games), but I am still watching with interest to see who takes the cup. And I SO hope its not the Washington Capitals.

BSG is TV at its finest. I finally got my girlfriend to watch Seasons 1-3 over the last few weeks in order to watch Season 4 with me live. She was completely hooked and we ended up with a couple Saturday afternoon marathons watching 8 episodes in order to be ready for the season premere.
    Good stuff.

Coyote Seven, that is not entirely true.
Watching Razor in it’s chronological position (ie late Season 2) is perfectly acceptable. There is nothing in it that spoils anything. It will just leave you a little confused and wondering about the future even more.

I love BSG! And Season 4 is the best! The actress who plays Starbuck seriously needs an emmy! And all the characters are just so mesmerizing!
I am probably one of the few who applauds the wisdom of setting a final season… it allows the story arc to have an end to aim for and I applaud that since there is an end (they find earth). I will hate to see the series end but I can’t wait to have the whole series on DVD so I can enjoy the whole story, beginning to end, as it was meant to be told by the writers, without having to adjust for longer playtime, or worse yet, sudden cancellation.

My husband and I started watching BSG because we had watched Firefly elevnty million times and had fully caught up on The Wire already.
And now I am in love with the entire cast minus Creepyoogie Baltar double plus Admiral Adama.
I agree with thirtyhelens, season 3 finale will knock your Keds off. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on that.
Now I have to go start with season one all over again.

LOVE BSG. I don’t talk about it much on the web as most any forum is riddled with what are sure to be spoilers (read: theories by very smart people).
Can’t wait for S4 of Doctor Who this week – BSG and The Doctor on Friday nights just like it used to be!!!

You know they all die, right? ha ha, j/k–couldn’t resist, as I lack a cock for you to punch 😉
So you’re liking S3? I enjoyed S2 more, but even the least satisfying BSG is a zillion times better than most other shows on TV.

  35. Hisham says:

The similar styles of Firefly and BSG might be due to the fact that the same company (Zoic) does the effects for both shows. In fact the Serenity pops up in the BSG pilot mini.

The best thing about BSG is that they didn’t ruin it by having one of those probably hatable Wil Wheaton-type characters that have been ruining great sci-fi TV shows for years… 😛
Sadly, I’m a couple seasons behind as my wife finds it too intense to watch during the only time we have to watch it (after the kids go to bed)…
And your TXTs (there’s a reason it’s spelled that way) with your wife belie your age. One of those “damn kids these days” could have said the same thing in 20 characters…

    Wil!
You are the one to who convinced me to start watching BSG about a year? ago, when you were bragging about how it was the best show on tv. So my husband and I Netfixed what we could, then started DVRing it we are now all caught up AND now I found out you have fallen behind!
