50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

did i mention that i’ll be in seattle this weekend?

  • WWdN in Exile

Wil Wheaton’s Geek Tour 2008 rolls into Seattle this weekend for the Emerald City ComiCon!

From my original announcement:

I am so excited to announce that I’ll be going to Seattle next month for the Emerald City ComiCon!

This is an awesome show, with a focus fucos on indie
books and publishers. I think I’ll feel right at home, if I can keep
myself from totally geeking out too much. (Yeah, who am I kidding?)

The schedule hasn’t been finalized, but I’ll be doing a performance from Happiest Days and maybe Just a Geek
on Saturday, and I’ll be doing a more general Q&A about blogging,
writing manga, being a geek, the burdens of being awesome, and writing
humorous panel descriptions on Sunday.

I will have a booth to hang out in when I’m not empaneled, so I’m
bringing copies of all my books, pictures to sign, and my glasses and
my shoes, so I have them.

Details:
May 10-11
Emerald City ComiCon
Washington State Convention and Trade Center
Seattle, Washington.

Since then, my schedule has been finalized, and it looks something like this:

Saturday
2:00pm – 3:00pm WIL WHEATON PERFORMS THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES

Before Wil Wheaton was a writer, he was an actor. He combines the two disciplines in this hilarious performance from his latest book, The Happiest Days of Our Lives. The Happiest Days
contains the stories Wil loves to tell, because they are the closest to
his heart: stories about being a huge geek, passing his geeky hobbies
and values along to his own children, and vividly painting what it
meant to grow up in the ’70s and come of age in the ’80s as part of the
video game/D&D/BBS/Star Wars figures generation.

Sunday
1:00pm – 2:00pm GET YOUR GEEK ON WITH WIL WHEATON

Wil Wheaton

(Author, Actor, Gamer, Geek, Blogger, Raconteur) invites you to get
your geek on during this hour-long Q&A. There may or may not be
punch and pie (most likely not).

The rest of the time, I’ll be hanging out in my booth, blasting my quads and blowing out my lats.

Slight little bit of not-so-great news: I am nearly sold out of Happiest Days. I have, like, 40 paperbacks because the second printing hasn’t arrived yet. My experience so far is that I tend to sell between 80 and 100 books at cons, depending on their size, and since ECCC has huge tracts of land, it’s unlikely that I’ll have enough for everyone who wants them. (Wow, don’t I sound like a douche there? "Hey, look how popular I am!" Sigh. I hope you know what I mean.)

However! I have some hardbacks, and I’ve planned all along to bring 50 copies to each con I attend this summer, as a sort of This Convention Only kind of deal, so I’ll have those. I will also have copies of the Star Trek manga. As always, I’m happy to sign whatever you bring me (within reason; keep your pants on, guys) and I will have a few other trinkets and whatnot. Like this cool Aqualad thing. Plus, as I said in my original announcement, all my glasses and my shoes, so I have them. Sadly, uncle Freddie will not be coming with me, because he’s dead.

OH! OH! OH! And you know what rules? Jeph Jaques from Questionable Content and Scott Kurtz from PvP will be at ECCC! I am so totally going to slime them.

Next week is Super-Con in San Jose, for those of you keeping score at home. Hopefully the new printing will arrive in time, or I may arrive with stone tablets and a mule. (Not The Mule, mind you. That would cause a Seldon Crisis for sure.)

You were already exceptionally high in Geekiness. And then you bust out the Foundation reference. And don’t even cite it, because you’re too cool for that.
You should seriously challenge Joss for King of the Geeks now.

Have a good time! w00t. That’s so awesome that you’re almost sold out of your first printing. Way to go!

I’m SO excited to get to meet you this weekend! =D
If you’ve got time, you should swing by the 501st Legion booth so we can get a picture with you… We’d LOVE that!

And on your way to DC, as per vbacon, would you puh-lease come to the NJ/NY area?? Huh??

Kudos on the Foundation reference there, Wil.
    Salvor Hardin would be proud.
And say, why the hell hasn’t anyone written a decent screenplay for a multi-film adaptation of the Foundation series yet?
I’ve been wanting to see something like that since I was 10.

I’m in New Zealand, so I don’t expect I’ll get to see you at a con in person anytime soon – but have fun, willya?
I LOVE the Foundation reference. Thank you!!

While at the con, go find Jennie Breeden’s booth, The Devil’s Panties (not satanic porn), and tell her loooong time reader Laura said hi, the woman that sent her a picture of her pirate! And, if you wear a kilt, maybe she’ll treat you to the leaf blower treatment. You could end up in her “Men in Kilts” calendar.

Hmm…Since there seems to be a few of us in the Mid-Atlantic I thought I would suggest Shore Leave 30. But it appears they have booked the guests for this year already considering the con happens in July.
Anyway, you can visit the con’s home page: http://www.shore-leave.com/
I haven’t been to this con in ages so I can’t speak to how it’s currently being handled.

I’m so overdosing on you right now, Wil. Listening to Just A Geek audio in the car, following on Twitter, and reading the blog, having just finished my freshly signed copy of Happiest Days (and already having passed it on to my sister-in-law, who is an aspiring writer/new blogger in her own right).
Well, better ODing on your geekiness than on the junk those kids were selling on the campus I work at (yes, SDSU, and no, I won’t link to anything; look it up, you lazy bums, it made national news).
I’ve been trying to find an apt place to post or write you how happy you’ve been making me over the last week with your writing and reading. I’m sure I’m not the first guy to tell you this, but I feel like in much of your reminiscing you’re describing MY life as much as yours. We’re about the same age, both grew up geeky in LA, and tons of other similarities. So I find myself finishing your sentences in the book, anticipating the references you make, and laughing out loud, often. God, the laughing.
    Thank you. So much.
Jealous I won’t be in Seattle this weekend, but in addition to the comics guys you mentioned, you should also check out Dave Kellet, who creates Sheldon, and his How to Make Webcomics pals.
    You, sir, rock.

    Wishing you a superb con!

    Hi Wil,
Have a good con! Is “break a leg” appropriate for public speaking?
Can I ask if you’ve got plans to produce a podcast of your performance? My iPod Shuffle hungers for more live HDOOL goodness (and a TNG review, perchance?).

Damn you, Wil Wheaton! I was on the bus this morning, innocently reading Happiest Days when I start to tear up reading The Big Goodbye and then I was really a mess reading Let Go. So, I guess thanks for the great read but now I look like a goon, crying on the bus. I also wanted to let you know that I’ve enjoyed going back and reading parts of Just a Geek to remind myself of the references in Happiest Days. You’re a great writer and it was cool to hear you read and meet you in San Diego. Enjoy, Seattle!

    Wil!
I’m involved with a film project called “Iron Sky”, which released a 2 1/2 minute teaser:
“In 1945 the Nazis fled to the moon. It’s 2018, and now they’re coming back”
    http://www.ironsky.net/
What makes this interesting is that it’s the 2nd film by the people who made “Star Wreck” (http://starwreck.com/), which is the most successful feature-length Internet-distributed film of all time. Star Wreck was made by 3000 people, has been downloaded 8 million times, is under a CC by-nd-nc license, and made good money both through DVD sales, and through an eventual deal with Universal.
Hope you get a minute to check it out!

Sounds like you had a good time in Seattle (via Twitter). Hope Super-Con is great too! I’d come and meet you but between work and a housewarming party, I don’t think it’s going to happen. It’s supposed to be in the 80s that weekend, but you know the Bay Area–bring a jacket anyway. :p

I saw your Sunday Q&A, and it was awesome. I love the format! Right up there with Kevin Smith in terms of charisma and humor. You should definitely consider doing more talks in this format in the future. Anyway, thanks for coming to Seattle! It was a joy to finally meet one of my personal heroes. (yeah, i was the guy in the infocom shirt that stood there creepily professing his hero worship to you. I may be successful now and can look back on my tormented high school days and laugh (or at least shake my head in amusement), but I’m just as socially inept as ever. Sorry about that.)

I would like to take it upon myself to say on behalf of Seattle and the state of Washington thank you for being you, being a proud geek, and of course coming to see us. Please come again next year Wil. The Q&A panel on Sunday was a giant leap forward in the advancement of Nerd/Geekdom while ever paving forth a path for future fellow comrades of the cerebral arts. . If you ever need a game Wil, a character sheet with your name on it awaits you in Seattle. Everything will be just fine but not for the popular kids. I wish nothing but good things for you and your family.
    Thank you.

Just wanted to say I thought you were super awesome is Seattle. Had a really good time.
Although, I was sad to hear all those stories about “geeks” who were tormented in high school. Hell, I’m in high school and I guess I’m lucky to be in such a good one. Seriously, at my school, the geekier you are, the cooler you are. I have no idea how it happened, but the smarter kids, the nerdier kids, are always the most popular. In fact, every year we have the annual “Geek Day” as an homage to how cool they all are. Maybe it’s a canadian thing, or maybe it’s just a new millenium thing, but either way I just thought I’d share at least one positive high school experience. 😀
Thanks for the good times in Seattle!

Friend of the organizers of the Seattle show, long time involvement in the comics industry, something of an internet geek, knew who you are, and that you’d made a new career as author but never paid much attention. Ran into an industry friend in Seattle who was on the way to your panel to which I said “Really?” about their unusual use of the hour. They said “Oh, you don’t know? Well, you gotta come.” I did and it was one of the highlights of the weekend, even stayed the night unplanned and ended up catching your Q&A the next day, also fantastic. Incredibly touching the people who gave their testimonies re: the influence of your acting in their lives and really made me happy. Attended and even organized a lot of public speaking / fandom events and admire anyone who gets up and does anything, but you’ve gained a new fan in me. Thanks, keep up the good works!
