classic photos redone in lego

Fans of Lego, photography, design, history, or things that are just plain awesome* will love this photoset on Flickr, where Flickr user Balakov has recreated famous photographs, from the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima to Maradona’s infamous Hand of God, using Lego minifigures and close-up photography.

Links to the original photos are included, so you can fully enjoy how incredibly awesome this is.

I’d like to point out that Balakov has released all of these images under a Creative Commons license, and is offering prints for sale.

Come on, seriously: how much does this rule?

(via geekdad)

*If you drew a Venn diagram of those things, I’d be in the middle of it.

I saw this earlier today, too. Tiananmen Square was my favorite Lego picture. Even in Lego form it’s still such a powerful image. Those pictures are really great.

Some are slightly unnerving based on the ever-smiling lego faces…

Awesome pointer, Wil, and here’s another for you: You’re in another webcomic today, Kris Straub’s chainsawsuit, FTW.

Man there is nothing I dislike more then someone saying that the artist has to much time on their hands. Art is not the waste of time that, that is implying.

You definitely get Extra Geek Points for referring to Venn diagrams. Those are my favorites! And I, too, would be in the middle of the diagram with you. Thanks for the link!

Oh. My. Gosh. I use several of those historic photos when I discuss those units in my history class. I am so adding the Lego versions to my presentations! Thanks Wil for bringing them to my attention.

For the Venn diagram fans – http://www.indexed.blogspot.com posts one diagram a day – sometimes, but not always a Venn.
Also sometimes Venn diagrams – Flickr song chart group. Some of which are freakin hilarious.

It’s sort of the reverse of these photos (re-creating classic photos with toys), but this post made me think of it:
    Children’s drawings realized as photos
    Enjoy!

I’ll join you there in the Venn diagram. These are excellent! I do love the Tiananmen Square re-creation…some larger tanks would have been even more effective, I think. But hey, it’s Lego 🙂

I never knew Lego could be Macabre.
    Learnt something new today…
I don’t see any teeth marks on the little people so his little brother hasn’t had the chance to chew on his toys…

Just to give you a peek in to the brain of Doshia and a what a fookin scary place it is, I’ll share this with you. I was a fan of both Star Treks (But of course). I never joined a fan club or anything, but wound up collecting qute a few toys, books, and suh through the years. Even though Star Trek TOS was cancelled before I ever watched the tele, it was in syndication. My cousin and I grew up watching it. I was the lucky one as I received the moog action figures one Christmas. Wheeeeeeeeeee!! In fact, those action figures are just about the only things I saved from my childhood. Well, those and a couple of Madam Alexander dolls my mom bought me (barf) in hopes of turning me into a nice proper girly girl.
At one time we reinacted scenes from Plan 9 From Outer Space many years before anyone had heard of Ed Wood and many years before Johnny Depp protrayed him in the movie.
The most recent incarnation was Star Trek action figure porn. We took photos and posted it on an old web page, long since deleted. I must have upset someone from Paramount because I received a threatening email from someone claiming to be someone that gave ass. I never did take them down, but I wound up not checking or updating my page in a year or so and it was deleted. Goddamn, what a bummer. The photos are around here somewhere and if I could find which box they were in, I’d put them up again. They were taken with instant cameras, and we went to Wally World and had them digitized. They’re probably on an old disc (as in 3.5, not as in CD or DVD). I’d have to find the orginal photos, as I no longer have a “floppy” drive. Damn, I’m oldl! Anyway… those photos reminded me of… well…. me.
    Just Doshia

You may have already seen this stormtrooper flickr set, and I know it’s not lego but still super cool.
