50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

in which i wear a red hat and travel by vine

  • WWdN in Exile

Wils_red_hat This totally made my day week, and I wonder if this is how Cory Doctorow and Stallman[1] felt when they were in xkcd?

You know, things like this have been happening to me more and more frequently lately, and while it’s still very hard get used to, it’s genuinely wonderful to feel cooler than I really am, even if it’s only for a few fleeting seconds.

Thank you, mysterious creator of Abstruse Goose!

[1] Does Stallman feel things like the rest of us do? I’m a little afraid to go exploring through that twisty maze of passages, all alike, to find out. It is very dark, I’m afraid.[2]

[2] If you understood any of that, congratulations, you’re a Geek. If you went exploring to figure out what it all meant, you just gained a level in Geek. If you feel compelled to argue about these footnotes, immediately gain another level in Geek, and lose a turn.

    Nice hat. Is it new?
    Read, laughed, enjoyed, bookmarked!

YOU ARE LIKELY TO BE EATEN BY A GRUE.
    Hee. 🙂

There’s definitely a t-shirt idea in there, especially with that last panel slogan!
    Excellent work.

Dammit, Wil, I seem to have pondered the twisty little maze of passages that is Stallman’s mind, and now I seem to have been eaten by a grue! That’s the sort of thing that can just ruin a week, y’know?
*grin* Good on you for the xkcd showing. 🙂

@katster: this isn’t xkcd, it’s Abstruse Goose, which appears to be inspired by xkcd.

I totally agree! Just got back from a conference for technical communicators (geeky, and fun for me, but not that cool) that just happened to be held in the same hotel as a WizardWorld event. Though I may not be entirely clear on the difference between Master Chief and Master Blaster, I got to hang out with some super cool people who make their living doing stuff like designing superhero costumes for movies and writing about video games. I got to pretend to be cool for days!

    Hey, Wil,
On a slightly related note, did you know that Shelly Mazznoble of Wizards of the Coast wrote a little story about you on the WotC forums?
    http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1041993
You need a gleemax account to read it, sadly. But it sounds like you made her day. XD

  13. phraktyl says:
    6 June, 2008 at 4:51 pm

    the mocaw,
As it turns out, you *don’t* need a gleemax account to read it. That was a great story, and an awesome example of how a few words, or short conversation with someone can make their day. Or in this case, possibly life.
Now, someone needs a mashup of WW swooping in and saving the day with regex…

    Great comic!
Speaking of xkcd, that totally reminded me of this one (which, incidentally, is hanging on my office door).

do not follow the path to the heart of stallman. you will be eaten by a grue.

That post and comic was filled with so much geek, I had to read it twice! I saw the comic when you sent it out on Twitter and had to tell you how cool it is!
Curses that others have already warned you about the grue. 🙂

  19. SandieK says:

    Heh.
First thing I saw when I saw the tweet was “red hat” and my mind went “Wil joined the Red Hats? But he’s too young!”
    Hilarious though.

  20. Sumo says:

So, the main difference between you and Wesley is you a) wear a red hat and b) use a rope instead of a transporter as your means of transportation?
Hey, (even though you must have already seen this) did you see this xkcd with special guest AI’s?

  21. Chris the Tiki Guy says:
    6 June, 2008 at 7:13 pm

I can’t help it…the red hat makes me think of Carmen Sandiego…but that’s a good thing! Really! No, please, Wil, I don’t wanna be eaten by a grue!

RE: “the twisty little maze of passages”
… and you are an old geek if you explored the twisty little maze of passages after midnight on a terminal in a friend’s office connected to a mainframe that only allowed access to games at night.
Bonus geek points if Stallman was sometimes in that building when you played. Even more bonus geek points if you know someone who gave Stallman a haircut.

It did happen occasionally, but I should have said “trim.” I knew one such honored demi-goddess. The person wielding the +17 scissors of shaping also was endowed with +42 feminine charm and sweetness.

    exit castle
    cross river
    get potion
    drink potion
    enter cave
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
Yeah, that was pretty much how far I could ever get. Ever. *squeeeeeee!* I want to lick you now! 😀

    Hey Wil,
I don’t know if you still read comments on old posts but in the Digg thread for this comic I found a reason to give thanks to you. Here’s the Comment:
FYI boys: Having the tingles for Wesley Crusher in our tween years helped convince us hot nerd chicks to keep to our own kind. I think all you who have benefited from this owe a debt of gratitude. We learned that a perfect face on a killer body doesn’t substitute for a knowledge of quantum physics in getting us hot! 🙂 Show a little love FFS.
