50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

at long last, your wait to see me, wil wheaton, interviewed at comic-con has come to an end

  • WWdN in Exile

I’m home from Comic-Con, and in that weird state where I’m too tired to be coherent, but too adrenalized to go to sleep. It’s pretty common to feel this way (like I’ve eaten a bag of Guatemalan Insanity Peppers) at the end of a long day at a con. There’s an accumulative effect, though, for epic shows like PAX and Comic-Con, and after thee days there plus a 2 hour drive home, my dogs are speaking to me in Johnny Cash’s voice. Also, someone’s built a pro shop shaped like a pyramid in my back yard, the doll’s trying to kill me, and the toaster’s been laughing at me.

Uhm. Right.

So. Until I can get my pictures uploaded and my thoughts organized, I thought I’d share this interview I did with Mahalo Daily from the Dumbrella booth yesterday. I’m slightly more coherent then, than I am now.

Woah. Paradox.

Actually that was pretty coherent interview.
Mind you this is through the lens having just woken from not-fun-dreams involving liquefying zombies as a means to cure cancer…
So umm… I may not be the be the best judge….

Dammit, Wil, stop being hot and married at the same time!
But then maybe i should just stop being drunk tonight. No, clearly it’s your fault for being hot. And awesome.
You know what? Forget I said anything.

Great Interview. Not being afraid to suck is advice I heard before but need to be reminded of. Thanks 🙂
Also,I want a copy of the shirt your wearing.

Great interview! Your voice sounds deeper than I remember… must be the beard 😉 (which looks great btw) Excuse me while I fangirl a little.

Come on, I perfectly understood you were trying to imitate Mark Hamill’s interviews during the five first seconds.

    Oh Wil, Wil, Wil…
I have high speed, to which who doesn’t anymore, I realize, but each time the buffer stream hesitated, it always did so when you were raising your eye brows, or had one eye open and the other half way to shutting, your mouth grimaced in a pained expression or your fang teeth were bared for all to enjoy…still, pretty decent interview in spite of my chuckling at you and probably for the wrong reasons…especially bad internet special effects.

The writing advice you give reminds me of something one of the writer I’m working with says all the time. (I’m a director, he’s a playwright. We’re developing a musical he’s written together.) He says, “I’m not a writer, I’m a rewriter.” He’s right there with you on most (if not all) first drafts sucking, but where a good writer separates himself from a mediocre or bad one is in the rewriting.
I gotta say, Wil, all of the rewriting I’ve read of yours so far says you’re a pretty damn good rewriter, too. 🙂

  8. amyleland says:

And I just made my own point by posting a comment with typos, that I wish the technology would let me rewrite to be better. 🙂

well, since Bass Pro Shops is wanting to take over the Memphis Pyramid (or at least they keep saying that), if you move to Memphis you could have a pro shop in a pyramid…

You’re pretty coherent in both, Wil… which, I don’t think says much for my mental state, but whatever.

Great interview — and I’d never heard that writing advice before!
Thx — I am a convert now and am willing to suck (at writing).
[Just proved it there, didn’t I? Ee gads.]

Keep the beard. It was like seeing you for the first time, not as the eager kid sneaking onto Picard’s bridge.

Hmmm Guatemalan Insanity Peppers…that must be what they feed to Team AMPTP (not to mention the network executives and studio heads have a serious addiction to them…they must have celebrity chefs who throw them into a Robocoupe, hit the liquidize button and then mainline them). It sure would explain months worth of bizarre behavior from the bosses, no?
The good news is that so far SAG ain’t giving up any ground in new media. Nice little resolution to that effect passed the national board *unanimously*, 68-0. Whoo-hoo! About damned time union actors get united on something and it might as well be getting paid to ply their trade on *any* technology ‘now known or developed in the future’.
Get caught up on your sleep Wil…my gut tells me the SAG ‘lack of deal’ siege is going to go on through at least September (when the SAG elections have taken place and possibly after the Emmy telecast on September 21st)

It must be hard to be articulate impromptorily (I think I made a new word) and you did a great job with the subject brought up. Criminal Minds is a favorite show of mine (love the police procedural stuff). But it’s not just that, it’s the varied personalities of the characters that gets me. I absolutely love that, not only will I get to see you act again, the show provided you with rejuvenation and inspiration.
    How lucky are we? Lots.

I loved that interview – your comment on how well the web works for niche communities is so extremely true. Plus I am a huge fan of the term “internet people”.

Kind of sad to see it end but had a great time at the Con this year. You were as amiable as I could ever expect or wish for. Hope you enjoy the ‘glentoon’ of your talking to your younger self. BTW – already finished Dancing Barefoot. (PS – listen to the toaster, they are very wise…)

Thanks for that sage advice, Wil.
Too bad I missed you at San Diego this year. I had gone in 2006 and ’07, but decided to take this year off.

Y’know Wil, there was something wrong with my feed of your interview, the words didn’t synch with your lips and it was similar to watching those old dubbed kung fu movies…I found that to be very amusing and interesting considering how tired you said that you were.

    Will,
Loved the video – thanks so much for posting! Now get some long, well-deserved rest!
Your advice towards the end is what I’ve been hearing from the “gurus” of internet marketing – be yourself, be authentic, don’t put on “airs”, and thusly you will go far. It takes time to get everything in its place, whether it be a story, a sales pitch on a page, or getting an online store to get sales … and it’s alright to ‘suck’, to make mistakes … the point is to learn and grow from them … that will make you successful in the end.
Can’t wait for the return of Criminal Minds, one of my fave shows anyhow (along with the CSI franchise and L&O franchise, and Numb3rs). They had quite a cliffhanger last season as it was!
Good interview – she asked all the right questions and packed a lot of info into a short amount of time!
    HUGS!

    Great interview.
I met you at the con on Saturday (I was wearing a “Talk Nerdy to Me” tank top). I wanted to tell you that I’m a huge TNG fan and that you should totally open an arcade of classic video games but instead I just grinned like a big dork. Just be glad you didn’t run into us later, like when my boyfriend and I ended up alone in an elevator with Phil LaMarr at L.A.’s Union Station at 1 a.m., when we were completely exhausted and incoherent from the day and the trip (we took the train to SD Sat. morning and then back to L.A. Sat. night) and my bf suddenly pointed his finger in Phil LaMarr’s face and said “YOU’RE PHIL LAMARR, right?” Thanks for taking the time to meet and talk with everyone. Despite my starstruck-edness it was a highlight of the con. I hope you had time to enjoy the con on your own as well.
I started reading my new copy of Happiest Days on the train home. I never had an original Game Boy but I was insanely jealous of my friends that did. Reading “beyond the rim of the starlight” brought all that back and when I got dizzy from reading on the train I spent the rest of the trip playing on my Game Boy Advance (take that, friends in 5th grade!).
And I wish I had driven like you did – I took the train this year because I thought it would be more relaxing but it really wasn’t and it took us almost 4 hours to get back home in L.A. from San Diego Saturday night. Next year I think I’ll go back to driving to SDCC.

I wasn’t going to comment, because I didn’t think it would be appropirate given the nature of the intereview. But since others have already done so, then let me join in the chorus and say: the beard totally works!!

There isn’t much useful advice in the world (including Jim Jarmusch’s advice not to take any advice, I guess) but yours to aspiring authors is pretty good.
    1) Don’t be a dick.
    2) Don’t be afraid if something you create sucks.
    3) Get going! Put some words on the page, produce some projects.
Useful constructive advice is surprisingly hard to give, nice job Wil.

Just pulling myself out of bed for a minute to check email and to read all my must read stuff.
Good interview. Though I’ll need to watch it again when my con coma is finished.
Also to answer about the socks- Wil’s booth was shared with some very cool people who had great geeky gear. Those socks were just one thing out of many (I would of bought the Litany of Beer if I thought it would of made it back to Atlanta) that I wanted.
The whole con was just endless- hey is that Kevin Smith- eyecandy.
Still, my highlight was getting a book from Wil for my 30th birthday.
Thank you for coming and letting me take that great photo.
    Okay con coma time again.

    Hey Wil,
Saw you at SDCC and got the last copy of JaG, much to the chagrin at least one of the cool Dumbrella folk. When I get around to uploading & proofing, I think I have a decent pic of you standing on the chair shooting the laptop & using the less-optimal lens. Nice action shot that actually looks cool. At least on the 1″ screen.
    Thanks for coming!

You are the coolest. Keep doing what you do. Oh, and thanks for the simple and necessary advice to us aspiring writers.

  44. charlotte says:

One of the many reasons that I keep reading is that you seem to keep speaking to/for your generation – or at least a certain geeky subsection. I am not a writer, but two things that I needed to hear from that interview: 1) be authentic and 2) more importantly – don’t be afraid to suck. Thanks that is what I needed to hear today.
