50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

part two of my interview with comicmix

  • Books
  • WWdN in Exile

The second part of my interview with Comicmix is online, wherein I say things like:

I was one of the earliest Mac adopters. I had a Mac 128K in the first few months of its release. [. . .] I loved that computer. It was portable, which is funny to say now, because it only weighed like, 20-30 pounds. It had a handle on the top, so clearly, it was portable.

And:

I don’t ever want to lose the experience of going to the comic shop on Wednesday and walking around — even if I’m only there to get two books. Spending 40 minutes looking at everything and talking to the other geeks that are there and having the owner of the comic shop say, “I know you normally don’t read this, but based on the years of you coming here I think you’d like it,” I really like that.

And:

CMix: Do you read any of the Star Trek comics at all?

WW: No.

CMix: No desire to or you just don’t care?

WW: It’s not that I have no desire. It’s not that I don’t care. It’s that I have a limited amount of time and I have to choose really carefully where I invest that time. If I’m forced to choose between a Star Trek comic or Criminal, I just enjoy Criminal more, so…

Um. In other words, I have no desire and I don’t care, I guess. That sounds really harsh, but . . . well, I just don’t know how to finish that without feeling like a dick. I guess that I like Star Trek a lot, but not enough to read the novels and comic books.

. . . yep, feeling like a dick right now.

Point of clarification: In the interview, I say “I’ve been reading Batman since Grant Morrison started working on it, because there are a few guys in the world that I’ll read anything by. Grant Morrison does Teletubbies, I’m there.” This makes it sound like I started reading Batman when Grant Morrison’s run began, but I’ve actually been reading Batman since around 1987 or 1988.

You can read the entire interview (part two of three) at Comicmix. You may also want to read part one. Hell, for all I know, you may want to look at a picture of a duck*. Go nuts, I’m not the boss of you.

*I really wanted to link to a SFW picture of Jenna Jameson there, but I was pretty sure I’d get letters if I did.

hmmm ducks or J.J.? I may have to send you a letter for actually linking to a duck. It’s a lose/lose idea I guess.
Oh, and would you *really* watch a Grant Morrison Teletubbies? I wish I could double dog dare you on that one.

Seems like you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Maybe you were just being honest? There are folks who’ll be pissed no matter what you say…

I really wanted to link to a SFW picture of Jenna Jameson there, but I was pretty sure I’d get letters if I did.
Yes, if you posted a NSFW or even a SFW Jenna pic I’d totally say, “Why’d you put a porn link on your site?! You’re squeeky clean!”
And then you’d probably say, although I’m not your mom, “Because I wanted to upset you, mom. Here, have another.”
And then I’d go to Fark.com and suicidegirls.com and enjoy myself immensely. 🙂
    Oh, and cool article!

    “It’s not that I have no desire. It’s not that I don’t care…”
Dude, that doesn’t make you sound like a dick. It simply makes you sound like someone who doesn’t necessarily like to read Star Trek comic books. If there are people who think you’re a dick because of that, well, too bad.
I’ve found that people who hold negative opinions of me or things I do aren’t the kind of people I’d want to like me in the first place.
Now, pointing out that you actually started reading Batman in 1987 or 1988 instead of, what, 1989 (I think that’s when Morrison first wrote a Batman tale)? Kind of a dick move.

I’ve only ever bought a one Star Trek comic book and technically that was Manga. I’ve never read any of the novels. I also haven’t read any Doctor Who novels or comics books and I think that is the mode of my fandom. I think some things just work better in certain mediums and not caring for that material in other mediums isn’t dickish. Or even duckish. Life is a test, and I confess
I like this mess I’ve made so far.

I was expecting the duck link to be a rickroll until I read the footnote, at which point I figured it would just be a duck.

Personally, I don’t think you sound like a dick at all. Whose business is it, anyway, whether you read a particular comic book and when you read it? I’ve loved movies, cartoons, and TV shows related to comics since I was very young, and I don’t think I’ve ever picked up a single related comic book. That will all change very soon, though, when I start reading “The Watchmen”. Just saw the trailer for the new movie, and I realized I WANT TO SEE IT. But, I also want to understand the premise, first. Maybe I won’t be such a lame geek after that.

Wil, in reference to part I of your interview with Cmix, where you were talking about re-writing Enemy Mine, the original it was based on was the film Hell In The Pacific with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune. Two men, one American and one Japanese, are marooned on an uninhabited Pacific island. In order to survive they must accept their differences and work together, despite their two countries being at war. Just a little trivia there, but it’s a classic film. You might appreciate it being an actor.

  12. Darren SLC says:
    22 July, 2008 at 7:00 am

Sorry, that last comment came across stiff and I sounded like a dick (yays, something we have in common! Besides a love for Grant Morrison). Anyway, it’s one of my favorite films, check it out and enjoy.

  13. ech says:
    22 July, 2008 at 7:26 am

What Wil didn’t tell us is that those are Rick Astley’s ducks.

  14. ech says:
    22 July, 2008 at 7:35 am

BTW, I’ve never been a big fan of other media tie ins to films and TV. I was a huge TOS fan and enjoyed TNG after its slow start. But I never had a desire to read a Trek novel. In part because it would conflict with the mental map I constructed of the motivations and inner life of the characters. Or something like that. I don’t know – Kirk the Intergalactic Stud and Jean-Luc the Galactic/Diplomatic Demi-Stud belong on a screen, not a page.
I’m sure Wil would read a novel told from the POV of Wesley and keep muttering “WTF, that’s not how Wesley would think/act/react” – because he spent a lot of time trying to figure those things out so he could do his job.

  15. Aaron says:
    22 July, 2008 at 8:34 am

Is it standard procedure to ask actors in SF&F TV and movies if they read the other media tie-ins? I guess in a comic magazine that makes sense. Still, I don’t see Carrie Fisher being asked if she read the Timothy Zahn books.
I agree with ech, I love Trek, but only really on TV. Most of the movies didn’t work and I was only able to make it through one book.

  16. buildersent says:
    22 July, 2008 at 8:44 am

    Wow – will you said
“WW: No, I don’t care. Whatever works best for you. I’d much rather get into it with people who irresponsibly drive gigantic, gas-guzzling cars, just because they want one. If you have a huge family, you have to lug them around somehow — but if you’re just some dude that needs to have a giant fucking Hummer to show everybody how big your dick is, that annoys me.”
Why would someone who chooses to pop out 5 or 6 little brats be looked upon differently by you than someone with no kids who just wants a large vehicle. Maybe Mr. Big SVU has a place in the backwoods with mud roads, maybe they drive the boy scouts to the hospital to visit old ladies, maybe they simply want a big vehicle so some semi does not crush them.
But I guess since “it’s for the kids” makes it alright. Maybe live by your own mantra, “don’t be a dick” because by that comment, you are.

I used tons of macs, Apple IIe on up but I never owned my own until I took all of my rubles and bought me a 9600/350mhz. I thought it was so awesome until 3 months later and the G3 came out and the light came on the screen flashing “Your obsolete” “You can no longer run the new OS” Fortunately, I had landed a new fandango job in the computer science department at an oil refinery. Now I’m outfitted with the best maxed out ram and all the programs I want.
I can totally relate to your time dilemma. I wear to many hats and must decide how long to wear each, unfortunately some have timed deadlines like the agriculture ones. Growing up I had to many comics since my dad worked at the world color press and would bring overrun bundles home every week. Yeah, that place is now gone right along with all the thousands of jobs.
and I like all was surprised by your last line. Ali Larter…..Whipcream Bikini for me….What can I say me likes me coolwhip. I told my girl I would never fool around on her, then I gave her a list of women to keep me away from, cause they may makes me a liar….thats one of them. If Ali’s a reader “Who loves ya, baby!” Good luck on your new show ‘krimineller Verstand'(Criminal Minds). German what else am I gonna use it for.

I’m with those who advise: go with what you like, not with what you ought.
Read books you like, not one’s you’re told to. See
movies you want to see, not
one’s you are required to see.
Follow your curiosity and inclinations. Expand when
    you feel like it.
Took me a long time to figure that out though.
Star Trek is a cultural phenomena, but it isn’t the
    entire horizon.
    Lots of other stuff too.

  20. jamenta says:
    22 July, 2008 at 9:49 am

This post reminds me of the common advice: read what you want, not what you ought.
There are two camps in regards to this.
After a long time of doing stuff and reading stuff I thought I should read, I’m beginning to realize you’re much better off really reading what you want.
Seems to spark the engine more and creativity really flows when you are very interested in the art you are experiencing or creating.
    Good luck with CM!

buildersent, with the exception of the first model year (when they still wanted it to act like the military vehicle, not just look like one), the AMC Hummer is a piss-poor off-road vehicle. It tends to get stuck in the mud; it’s for looks, not for work. Most of the people I know who live “out in the tuleberries” (as we call it around here) drive beat-up pickups and/or Subaru station wagons – you don’t want to be driving something pretty on those back roads, trust me. No, the guy (or gal) who’s all alone in the Hummer isn’t driving a car, he/she is driving a motorized penis extension.
Like Wil says, don’t be a Richard.

Oh, for crying out loud, buildersent. You clearly don’t like Wil or his blog, so why keep coming back? This isn’t a no-holds-barred political forum where you’re encouraged to be outrageous and insulting. It’s like you’re visiting him, based on the general invitation you forfeited a while ago, and each time you do something unspeakable on the floor of this room he’s built for us. What is wrong with you?

  24. ReadReadWrite says:
    22 July, 2008 at 2:37 pm

buildersent, I just realized why you came back. Just to find some excuse to yell “na-na, na-na, boo-boo” at Wil for telling you off last time you were a jerk here. Very sad. But by that way of thinking I guess you’re even…except now you have to get even with me, right?

I dunno. Comic books and novels based on a show are a different kind of fandom. I don’t go there either, but I still consider myself a true fan of Star Trek, Buffy, etc.

I had to look up the weight of the Mac 128K because 20-30 pounds sounded way heavy (I too had one) and it was actually just 16.5 pounds. All it was was a 9-inch CRT, two boards, and a floppy drive. It ran on 60 watts so not much of a power supply. No hard drive, no fans. The last time I had a chance to play with one, the most striking thing was the silence.

Such an attitude does not make you sound like “… a dick.” When you look at how much is out there, between the scads of books and comics and zines and whatnot, you have to eventually come to the realization that life is too short to try to catch everything. One has to prioritize. It’s like being a community theater actor and realizing that there is simply no way to see all of the shows in which your friends are performing.

Want to go at me, drop an email you shouldn’t be using commmnets for that.
Will’s bitching about SUV’s except ‘for the children” does indeed make him come across as a dick. The rest of the article he comes across as intelligent.

I was just dusting the book shelf today and looking through my Trek books. I thought I’d put in a plug for Peter David, who I think is the best Trek novel writer if anyone out there is contemplating reading Trek fiction.
