50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

So there’s this movie coming out next year. A lot of people want to like it, but an equal number of people are concerned that it may not be as good as they hope. There’s a lot riding on this movie for a lot of people – some would say an entire franchise – so there are a lot of people who get . . . touchy . . . when people like me express opinions about it. The studio’s done a great job clamping down on actual news, so lots of rumors and speculation have filled the resulting vacuum.

This morning, SF Signal linked to an interview with Kevin Smith (I swear, this blog isn’t going to be all Kevin Smith, all the time) where he obliquely discusses a movie that he can’t really talk about:

Host: So thumbs up on The Watchmen, what else you got?

Smith: I saw a movie last night that I cannot talk about.

Host: Was it good?

Smith: It was phenomenal.

Host: Any stars, any break out stars, and do they trek?

Smith: The stars absolutely trek in this film. It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn’t need to be worried–about this film I cannot talk about…It was in very capable hands. The director did a phenomenal job–the director and his crew. Top notch cast and the guy that plays the lead is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful. He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy.

Host: How do you out Shatner, Shatner?

Smith: I don’t know what you are talking about.

Host: I was just saying that as an expression.

Speaking of Kevin Smith (and, really, I swear this isn’t going to be a regular thing), Anne and I went to the opening of Crazy 4 Cult 2 at Gallery 1988 on Friday night, thanks to an unexpected invite from Jensen, who I believe is the gallery’s owner. It is phenomenal. Let me just say that again, to make my point: fuh. nuh. muh. nul.

I didn’t know that some of my favorite artists are in the show, including Ben Walker (who does awesome work with bears and guns) and Dan Goodsell, who does Mr. Toast. Andy Suriano, who you may have seen play the part of my Russian mail order bride on Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show, also has a piece in the show that’s spectacular. My favorite pieces in the show, though, have got to be Scott Campbell‘s*, including the poster for the show, and Kirk Demaris’s** family portraits.

I was absolutely blown away by this show, and if you’re within . . . let’s say two hours of Los Angeles . . . it’s worth the effort to come into town and see it before it closes. While you’re in the neighborhood, you can buy comics (including the new Star Trek Manga that has my story The Art of War in it, plug plug) at Golden Apple, see a show down the street at ACME, and have dinner at Bulan Thai, the best vegetarian Thai restaurant I’ve ever been to.

* He has a webcomic that’s tremendously entertaining. He also did great showdowns of the 8-bit era for I am 8-bit.

** You could easily lose a few hours enjoying retro culture at Kirk’s Secret Fun Spot.

Great news. I am really looking forward to the new movie and I hope it keeps Trek alive.

Awesome talking to you and your wife at the show. I already can’t wait for next year since it just keeps getting bigger and better. You were totally right about those family portraits. Way up there on my fave list. The Pee Wee’s Big Adventure tiles were my favorite though.

That’s very good news indeed on Watchmen, if that of course was what Kevin Smith was talking about which of course he wasn’t.

Knowing that Kevin Smith thinks it was good helps to relieve some of my fears slightly. I really hope they don’t fuck it up.

But will there even be a movie? If Fox prevails in their lawsuit against Warners, they apparently want the file destroyed rather than share profits or negotiate something else. I’m not sure what to make of all this…

I was excited for a moment to hear that Kevin Smith liked that certain film…
…but then I remembered that it was Kevin Smith who said that Revenge of the Sith “lived up to any expectation [he] still held” in a review fairly bursting with gushing praise.
But, I don’t want to be cynical… I’ll just assume even Kevin Smith can be wrong (rarely!), and that he’s right this time around0. 🙂 I’m still excited to see this film.

I am very excited that Kevin Smith found this particular film phenomenal. His opinions resonate with a very different demographic than a certain sci-fi franchise usually attracts. From his post, it seems that the wait until May will be worth it.

Well, I suppose they don’t mind it when you give positive opinions. Perhaps you should just tow the line and say how supportive you are of the project and of the director’s vision? If you do that he might put you in the next one.

I agree with dexeron. I love Kevin Smith but as a control measurement, what were his public pre-release statements on the Star Wars prequels? Presumably he couldn’t talk about those movies either.

Spotted you as we were on our way out, Wil… would have stopped to say hi but you appeared deep in artistic appreciation, didn’t want to distract you. 😉
    Man, I wish I could afford all 3 Harold & Maude-inspired pieces.

This is so great to hear!
I have previously been a lurker here but I feel the motivation to actually comment now. Go me, right? 😛
Anyway, my cousin is dating the lead in this particular film, something that would probably lead me to make a really geeky ass of myself if I were to ever hang out with them (fortunately, though, I live in SF and never get down to LA). I guess my cousin is totally in love with him, though.
My mom and stepfather were down in LA a couple of weekends ago visiting my aunt and uncle, and they had my cousin and her boyfriend over for dinner and bocci ball. He was a huge hit with my mom, for sure. I know she’s only judging his character, and not his acting prowess, but the idea that this movie (something that means a lot to me) could mean such great things for someone who means a lot to my cousin, is really cool.
Plus, selfishly, OMG that’s like two degrees of separation, right? 😛
Anyway, just wanted to share this little piece of my life. 🙂

By the way, Wil, Scott C. did the album cover for MC Frontalot’s new album, “Final Boss”, coming soon. I figured you and some of your readers would dig that. There’s a link to the art up on Front’s site right now.

I love the TNG-era films. They’re obviously not Oscar-worthy, but I came out of all of them very satisfied (I kept waiting for a Wesley appearance). When I heard the premise for the next Trek movie, I was pretty bummed. I wanted my beloved cast back. But I understand why the cast and crew saw it fit to call it quits after so long, so that’s just the fan in me talking.
I still think there’s room for a final sendoff for the TNG squad if it’s written well enough. I know they wanted to kind of close the chapter on the Q stuff with All Good Things, but that’d be the setup I’d like to see, provided it was truly a tasteful conclusion to everything and not just another quirky Q spin-off story. I don’t know what they could do to top the finale of the series, but if they could somehow come up with something great, I’d be all for it. The cast members are just the right age now to do the whole “pulling the old crew back together for one final mission” thing. Of course they’d have to find a way around the problem of the ageless characters such as “Data” and Q. And again… it would have to be well thought out and well executed to avoid a “Oh great, another Patrick Stewart Star Trek movie” reaction from the general public. But again… wishful thinking from a fan.
I haven’t kept up with the new film. I saw the teaser poster with the “retro” style 4-split with the colorful pictures of the characters. It was then I decided I hated it, as the characters looked like something right out of a WB Dawson’s Creek spin-off. It looked so incredibly lame and weak I just couldn’t bring myself to have any enthusiasm for the movie. And I haven’t heard anything since to make me feel otherwise (Kevin Smith’s opinion only goes so far). I don’t have much faith in Hollywood and I’m a pretty tough critic, and I just know that they’re going to have to make everything “hip and relevant to today’s youth and general movie-going audience”. Which just translates to a lot of terrible dialog and cliche’ situations and characters.
But don’t get me wrong, I’d love to be proven wrong. I’ll check out the reviews before I decide whether or not to see it.

    Off Topic Comment here:
What an amazing opening act at the DNC today.
Ted Kennedy, wow, what a speech that may be his last, who knows.
You know, I haven’t felt American for many many years now, but suddenly, there seems to be a gleam of light … and maybe – just maybe, Americans can start being Americans again i.e. disown the gluttony of idiots who think America is for the few instead of the many.

Sadly, I will not be able to go see the lovely show in LA. It sounds amazing to be sure (as does that Thai place!)
However, Wil, I am the lady you met in Seattle on Sunday of the Comicon, who sells tea for a living. I didn’t know if you were going to have the time (or inclination) to drop by and stock up while you’re in town, but if you do drop me a line and let me know when you might be there. I’ll try to coordinate my schedule to intersect with you at the shop. Also, I always give the staff Sunday of Labor Day weekend off so they can enjoy the music festival in town (or PAX if they wish), so the store is closed that day.
(And, lastly, if you’re wondering… you said you communicate best though comments or I’d have sent email. Just so you know.)

Hi Wil! Kirk Demarais here offering many, many thanks for your encouraging words at the show and for the mention and links here!
I was so impressed with the fact that you were practically out the exit when I accosted you for a photo, yet you still volunteered to fight your way back through the crowds to get to the Stand By Me painting; all for the sake of a complete stranger’s snapshot! (That was before we were officially introduced.) What a great glimpse of your character!
This confirmed my longstanding theory that you are a genuinely cool human. Anyway, running into you right off the bat was the perfect way to begin such an awesome evening. If I ever manage to get my hands on some extra prints I’ll be sure to get you a set.
P.S. The snapshot turned out well! I’ll be blogging about the show soon.
