reminder: I’ll be in Sacramento this weekend

  • Books
  • WWdN in Exile

This is just a reminder that I’ll be in Sacramento this weekend for the Sci-Fi/Horror convention From The Land Beyond (Saturday) and the anime convention Sacanime Comic convention SacCon (Sunday).

I just got a bunch of copies of Uchu, the latest Star Trek manga, so I’ll have those with me in addition to the usual compliment of books and stuff, including the last 40 or so copies of Sunken Treasure.

I sent an e-mail to everyone who demanded me on Eventful. It’s only 43 in Sacramento, but I spammed San Franciso, too, since it’s only a 90 minute or so drive. I think this is going to be a very small show, but everything indicates that it’ll be a lot of fun for everyone on both sides of the table. If you’re rollin’ it NorCal-style, I hope you’ll come out. It will be hellacool.

Updated to add: I fixed the name and linked the website for Sunday. Also, GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE! Billy West will be at the comic/anime show on Sunday.

And to clarify: The 15 year-old version of me you may be expecting from the website will not be attending. You’re going to be stuck with the 36 year-old version of me. Of course, if you give me five dollars, I’ll sigh heavily, roll my eyes, and tell you that you just don’t understand me! if you really want to see that other guy.

This is just a reminder that I will be in Cleveland this weekend. And not Sacramento. Le sigh. $#*% OLAC/MOUG Conference and their selection of Cleveland as a conference location.

Friday is my birthday so I’m trying to convince my husband that stopping by to say hi would be a great birthday treat. 🙂 The last time I saw you was 8+ years ago. I’m sure you don’t remember but you and two friends were in Sac and stopped at CompUSA back when it was on Howe near Arden. I still have the “Price Match” slip you autographed for me.

Berta, you definitely want to stop by and pick up a copy of Sunken Treasure. There’s stuff in there that hasn’t been blogged and probably won’t.
    Just sayin’.

Sacanime was in late August. I think you’re a month late for that. The next one is in January 2009.

    Ok, total newb question here:
I’ve never been to a con, nor am I likely to attend the one coming up, but I’m curious about the preferred etiquette for these things. Everybody knows that you have to deal with the “ZOMG! Fanboy” drooling over you every now and again, but what would your “10 rules on meeting Wil Wheaton” be? For example, are you a hand-shaker, or do you prefer to keep your hands to yourself? What do you figure the general rules should be for meeting celebs or persons of interest at these functions? I’m completely aware of the “treat me like you’d want to be treated” golden rule, but I’m looking for some “WWdN flavr”… 🙂

@dafoink: Yeah, I was asked to be at WeHo *after* I’d committed to the convention. I don’t know why it says I’ll be there.
@cyeagerLMT: Scalzi has exactly what you’re looking for. Let me see if I can find it … [one googles later] Here it is: Meeting Authors at Conventions.

Excellent. Just what I was looking for. Now I feel like I have a leg up on my celebrity social skills.
It sometimes feels a little hard to navigate those waters. I feel split sometimes wanting to make sure those folks that I admire are appreciated, but not slobbered over. I generally don’t get excited by celebrities (read: EVER), but there are folks out there that I truly wish to let them know that I support them and appreciate their work. It also just happens that these rare folks happen to have the best attitudes towards their fanbase. For those folks (Wil, you be one of dem), my gratitude for doing what you do and keeping it real with your fans, cannot seemingly be expressed poetically enough. So, while I will likely never get to meet you in person Wil, thank you.
Thanks for being you, and keep up the good work. I wish there were more like you.
    Peace. 🙂

    I will be there!!!
I’m so excited to be going! This will be my first convention and I have wanted to meet you for like 21 years (since the first episode of TNG aired — yes, I know you are not Wesley, you just played him on tv).
I also have a question, what is a reasonable amount of stuff to ask you to autograph? The reason I ask is because my plan is to bring my Stand By Me DVD (the tape wore out some time ago) and my copy of Dancing Barefoot to have signed, but I have several tee-shirts and I was thinking about bringing one of those for you to sign (although I will not ask you to sign the one I am wearing on that day). But then there is the Star Trek manga and the Sunken Treasure chap book (that I am hoping I can get a copy of) that I would also want signed and depending on how long the line is I might just stick with the Stand By Me DVD and the Dancing Barefoot book, but I was wondering what would be reasonable. I am sure there is a charge for getting stuff signed so if I could get an idea of how much it costs that might help me be more selective as I also have to work within a budget.
Anyway, I am really excited to finally get to see you in person, as I have been a fan of yours for just over 2/3 of my life now.
P.S. There is also a really good chance I will not be able to speak when there so my very soon to be husband Kevin maybe be the one making the requests for autographs because I have completely frozen up.

Wil, I know that you get grief all the time from Star Trek fans but to me you’ll always be the kid who “got” Ensign Lefler. And for that you’ll always be my hero. 🙂

Wil -I haven’t thought of you as Wesley Crusher in AGES, so no worries there. I think I stopped thinking of you as Wesley around the time that you did Mr. Stitch … 1995?
@Andrew – thanks for the suggestion, I’ll have to pick one up. Haven’t read much of Wil’s writing yet, other than his blog.

Ok, I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but, Wil, have you ever thought of appearing on the NPR radio show “Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me!”? Perhaps as one of their “Not My Job” guests? I think it would be great, esp for those of us that can’t make it to the west coast for your signings… (of course if you have already been on and I missed it, my apologies and now I’ll have to search the archives for that show). Anyway, just a thought…now back to your regularly scheduled Friday.

Totally awesome on the Billy West thing.
I ‘babysat’ his table at the local convention here while he was off doing panels.
He is far too underrated… as I was sitting there, I had countless people come up to me and ask if _I_ was Billy West despite being on all accounts female and looking nothing like the headshots spread on the table in front of me.
He was totally awesome and made a point to say “Thank you” and shake my hand at the end of the day.
Now only if all panelists *cough-Daniel Logan-cough* were as nice. But I guess he gets the 19 year old eye rolling excuse.

Curse you, Left Coast, you get all the Wil sightings that are denied Baltimore/Philly/NYC. Wish I could be there.
@cyeagerLMT/@Wil, thanks for the excellent question and link to Scalzi’s delightful response at signings and such. Great question and equally great response.

A thank you that took 21 years to make:
    Hello Wil,
I got to see you today at the convention in Sacramento, it was the first convention I had ever been to, and the first time I got to see you in person.
I was 10 years old when the first episode of Star Trek TNG aired and lets just say instant and first crush was formed when I saw Wesley Crusher on TV. I watched every episode in my parents’ living room. I later watched Stand By Me (which I think is absolutely brilliant work) and eventually Toy Soldiers (I cry from your last scene through the credits every time I watch the movie so, I can’t say I am entirely certain what all happens for the rest of the movie while I am crying).
I’m not sure how I found your blog anymore, but I did and I really enjoyed and appreciated your style of writing. I bought a ton of stuff off of the cafepress store and eventually each of your books (the most recent at the convention today).
I wanted to thank you for taking the time to talk to Kevin (who will be my husband next Saturday) and me while you were setting up and for signing everything we put in front of you to sign. I had read many other people’s comments about how nice you were at conventions and Kevin had actually met you before when he worked at TechTV on the Screen Savers (long rant that was removed about G4) and had told me how cool you were when he met you then. Even if nothing had been signed and all I had was listening to the conversation, I would have been happy beyond belief because you were so incredibly kind and generous with your time and answered every question we had.
Today the fantasy of my 10-year-old self was fulfilled and my 31-year-old self sat in quiet enjoyment front and center at your panel, happy and amazed that this day happened because I never thought it actually would.
So again, I say thank you, it was a truly memorable experience that I will enjoy for a very long time to come.
    All the best,
    Elizabeth
