50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

memphis to mars

  • WWdN in Exile

Anne and I are painting cabinets and working in the house today, so I only have time for three quick things while I eat:

  • This Savage Chickens comic made me giggle.
  • I read on Lifehacker yesterday that the final release of OpenOffice.org version 3.0 – which finally includes native Aqua support for OS X – is now available. I’ve used OpenOffice.org for all of my books, and I just love it. I haven’t had a chance to do more than start up 3.0 to make sure it compiled correctly, but it looks beautiful. Congratulations to everyone who worked on it.
  • Did anyone else see Bill Maher last night? This economist, Stephen Moore, was the real life version of the character Stephen Colbert plays on the Colbert Report. For the first ten minutes of the panel, I thought he was doing a bit, stealing from Colbert. When I realized that he wasn’t . . . wow.

It’s so beautifully autumn-like in my neighborhood today, I could just fall over with joy. It’s in the mid-60s, completely clear, and a little breezy. This is my favorite time of year.

ETA OMG: Congratulations to Sean and Tara!

omg. I’ve been using OpenOffice 3.0.0 beta for months now and I’ve HATED it. Why? Because it automatically did stuff I didn’t want it to do, even if I turned it off, it would turn back on again. It was so FRUSTRATING! But I just downloaded the stable version and it looks ok so far. Plus, there was this thing called “formula” and I went “What’s that?” I opened it and it was OpenOffice MATH! OMG! I hope I can use it in my statistics class. Anything to not have to buy a $150 calculator!
I sure hope it isn’t frustrating to use anymore. I never downloaded the earlier versions since I have a Mac. Crossing my fingers it works well.

Open Office 2 wasn’t even opening up on my Mac anymore since I got Leopard 10.5 Finally downloaded 3.0 when school started and it’s much better. I can even print directly without exporting to PDF! Looks like I beat the ‘official’ stable version by a few days, so I’m off to upgrade.
I also downloaded Neo Office and that plays *very* nicely with Mac. I’m keeping them both for a while before I make up my mind. Or maybe I’ll just have my cake and eat it too.

    Hey Wil,
Caught Bill Maher last night….one of the best panels I have ever seen with Jocelyn Elders (who’s older than my great grandmother) telling Stephen Moore if you don’t know what you’re talking about then don’t open your mouth.
But hands down the line of the night was from comedian Dana Gould telling Stephen Moore that Sarah Palin comes across as an “evangelical dominatrix that wants to spank you on your bottom”.
    Classic tv.

Sorry, the first panelist was Rep. Maxine Waters, NOT Jocelyn Elders. Apologies

I have to agree with you on Bill Maher also, some good stuff.
Also it is 8:42 eastern time and OU still sucks and Texas is the new #1

How can you hate openoffice? It is a free version of Microsoft Office. Sure their are some missing features but again it is free.
It also made me laugh. and Fall is my absolute favorite time of year especially in those conditions.

Maher’s show was great! I especially liked Dana Gould. Very funny and very on point. For those of you who missed it, you can get the podcast of the show for free on iTunes. It should be available in a few days.

How can I hate OpenOffice? Do you know how annoying it is when the bulleting or the numbering turns on automatically and you can’t get the stupid thing to stop? And you turn it off and it still does it? Or you import a .doc file and it is totally fucked up on your screen? A .doc file with forms and tables and such import so badly that it’s worthless to even try.
Plus, there’s the fact that the new Word 2007 is COMPLETELY different from the old version, so who knows the compatibility issues that will now arise.
Sometimes OpenOffice is just a headache. But, it serves it’s purpose.

I have to agree with you Mama Gaea. Word 07 is COMPLETELY Different then the previous versions. I really do not care for any of the 07 Packages.

Is it a requirement for economists no be named Stephen? I was at first horrified that one of the authors of Freakonomics was like that…until I realized it was another Stephen on the show.
(Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner wrote Freakonomics)

Well, while your were painting cabinets I spent the day hiking and geocaching in the desert! All I can say is it was amamzing. BTW, my cabinets in my garage could use a fresh coat of paint. How much would you charge to help me out?
    Mike

I caught the last half of the Bill Maher with Oliver Stone on it. I laughed till I cried.
We have to do the kitchen cabinets and find new hardware. The 60’s style just isn’t working anymore. What a job. You made me tired thinking of it.
Autumn! YAY YAY YAY! For us it’s in the 70’s. The leaves haven’t turned yet, but are starting. We have at least 7 different types of Japanese maples and they all turn such beautiful colors. That’s about the only good thing I can say about Anustown, oops I meant to say Anniston, Alabama, is that the foliage is beautiful.

Actually, Stephen Moore’s a pretty good economist. I’ve read some of his work for the Cato Institute and it seems to me that he DOES know what he’s talking about. Which makes me wonder if Maxine isn’t one of the legislators responsible for the Frannie/Freddie mess. BTW, blame for that debacle can be put on both sides of the aisle.
