50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

holy hole in a donut

  • Television

Since Friday of last week, I’ve done about eleventy million interviews to support my episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Fall of the Blue Beetle, which airs next friday, January 23, at 8pm on Cartoon Network.

I recorded this episode several months ago, and I haven’t been able to talk about it at all until now, because the only thing studios like more than keeping things secret is keeping things secret.

I think the bulk of the interviews I’ve done will start going online today and tomorrow, but I got official permission yesterday to pretty much say whatever I want, and since I’ve been waiting so long to say this, I’m saying it now: I play Ted Kord, the silver age Blue Beetle.

Yeah, I’m so excited about that, I kinda needed to put it in bold. Just be glad this isn’t MacWrite, where I could have bolded, outlined, underlined, and shadowed it. You know, because in 1985 it made sense to do that with things that were important, like letting people know that this was Wil’s room so KEEP OUT I MEAN IT!

Anyway, over the next week, I’ll link to the interviews that I’ve done, where I talk a whole bunch about working on the show, my life-long Batmania, and voice acting in general, but it’s not every day that I get permission to say whatever I want about something that hasn’t aired … so now you know.

Congratulations Wil, not only on the role, but for keeping it a secret for so long… I’d be bald by now if I had to hold it in that long!

Woot! (Picture it bolded, outlined, underlined and shadowed.) (Oh yah. And maybe in red.)

Rock on sir. Does anyone remember the short lived blue beetle comic book series. I always saw the beetle as mix of batman/watchmen’s nightowl type character but with less performance anxiety *cough* but tons more sarcasm.

“Batman is nobody’s bitch!” (in Batman the Brave and the Bold). Best quote in an interview yet, Wil. Loved you on BTR yesterday!

    That’s pretty awesome, Wil.
I think I’ll *have* to watch this one, even though I wasn’t too impressed with the first two eps of this show. :-/

Having done one of those interviews, I can say you definitely didn’t suck. I was sort of nervous going into it, and not sure why, but I think it was sort of different because I actually read your blog, and sort of cared that it would be an ok experience, and that you wouldn’t think we were total tards. Though I do interviews pretty much every day. Though if you had, I guess I could have had my own Wil Fucking Wheaton piece, so I probably blew my chances for the big time. Thanks for the interview, and can’t wait to see your episode of Batman.

Wil, that’s GREAT, dude. Ted Kord is one of my favorite comic characters ever! I’m really happy for you and will keep an eye out for that episode.
Also, to commenter error42, Alan Moore based the Watchmen characters on Charlton comics characters from the 50s and 60s that DC Comics had just acquired at that time. Night Owl was directly based on Steve Ditko’s Blue Beetle, aka Ted Kord. So now you know.

Very cool, Wil. I’m still bummed that they killed Ted.

Wil, that’s fantastic. I’ve been waiting to find out when you were going to appear. B:BnB is the #1 show in my household, as my 6 and 5 year old boys love it, as does my 3 year old daughter. It has the impressive distinction of being the only show on TV that my kids know when it airs. Everything else they have watched in their whole lives has just been on TiVo whenever they wanted to see it. But BnB is destination viewing. They countdown to Friday each day, and we plan our Friday night dinner around it (in fairness to TiVo they also watch about two recorded episodes every day as well). Within two weeks I’m sure they’ll have watched you play Ted (who shouldn’t have been killed dammit!) a dozen times.

Wil, you know the folks at Scans Daily are basically creaming themselves over this, right? 🙂

Awesome, Wil! I am looking forward to learning more about the Blue Beetle and your experiences in production.
Isn’t cool how taking an interest in other people opens you up to things you didn’t know existed? Speaking on behalf of myself, I had never heard of the Blue Beetle until the internet buzz started about you taking on the role. In my mid twenties, I was a huge fan of the SpiderMan comics, so I am particularly thrilled to discover that one of the creators of the Blue Beetle character concept also played a hand in the creation of SpiderMan.
I look forward to hearing your take on the character.

You also could have written that as
and I haven’t been able to talk about it at all until now, because the only thing studios like more than [REDACTED] is keeping things secret.

I gather you like this new series, Wil…I’m still on the fence about it. I like my Batman dark, and The Brave and the Bold is very Silver Age. I’ve been enjoying it, but it’s sort of like Batman got injected with Superman’s personality…

holy crap! that’s awesome! Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle was the first BB i ever read. it was the comedy Justice League run with Martian Manhunter as the leader. The book was the first DC book i liked enough to follow for a few years.
Batman Brave and the Bold is a lot funner than I’d thought it would be, too. Can’t wait to see how you portray the silver age beetle.

My perennial comic-book/pulp character is shamelessly ripped from Blue Beetle and Grey Ghost. He’s called the Sable Spectre and now I’ll always imagine him with Wil’s voice! 🙂

This may be the coolest thing EVER! The Ted Kord BB has always been one of my favourite superheroes, from back in the day when I was completely addicted to JLA,JLI and all of Keith Giffen’s other wonderful hilariousness. God, I loved those books.
Congrats, Wil, and I’m looking forward to … umm, well, torrenting it because I don’t have cable, but then eventually buying it on DVD!

Way cool! I’ve started watching this new incarnation of Batman but it hasn’t really grabbed me yet. Looking forward to seeing your performance Wil!
