work in progress

I should really tell OpenOffice that Stardate is a word, but now it’s kind of amusing to me that it always tells me “UR DOIN IT WRONG!”

Coming of Age is as enjoyable to watch as I remember, even though I haven’t seen it in at least twenty years. In fact, my only real complaint so far (I’ve watched a lot more of it than it would appear from this screenshot) is that my acting is pretty flat and predictable. I make a lot of obvious, weak choices. Of course, I’m not exactly objective about that sort of thing, so maybe I’m being too critical of myself. Also: really bad pre-helmet hairdo. There’s a story behind that, but you’ll have to wait for the book to find out what it is.

Oh, and to anyone who says that Memory Alpha isn’t exhaustively comprehensive, I can only say: flux coordinating sensor.

I want you to know I have all seasons of STTNG queued up in Netflix, as I have not watched them since their original airing and had a hankering.
So be warned: There may be Wesley Crusher mockery coming soon to a blog or microblog near you.
    🙂

I have missed your ST:TNG reviews! I will be eagerly awaiting this one!

funny that you should blog about one of your old ST:TNG episodes today, I just began rewatching the series, in between watching Dr.Who (the new seasons) for the first time( Maybe not rewatching ST, since it will be my first time in seeing all the episodes in order, rather then how i have watched them in the past – an episode here and there on television) I just watched The Naked Now right before I got this post, and the only thing I thought of was what are your thoughts on that episode. (If it was me acting, and don’t take offense, but i don’t think I would have much more to say then to curse the writers….But then again I am not an actor 🙂

    I second the ‘CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’ sentiment 🙂

For some reason this made me think of “The First Duty,” one of the first episodes of ST:TNG I ever saw. Still one of my favorites, too.

Wil, I love your open source desktop! And what are you talking about? Young Wesley’s hair is sculpted with 100% WINZ!
I can’t remember that particular episode, but generally I will agree about your acting on TNG. But c’mon, you were what, 15? Give young Wil a break, mmmmkay?

I haven’t watched STTNG in years. I am kind of shocked at how young you look, but then I am now over twice the age of Wesley. Boy, is that weird. I wonder when Riker is going to start looking young to me.
I hated that Wesley helped Mordock during that test. You have this super smart kid who is ambitious enough to request bridge access from the Captain of the starship on which his mother is stationed and yet not ambitious enough to pay attention to his own work during a test of his individual ability to fulfull his dreams. Really? You say the writers didn’t know what to do with that charater? Shocker. I never would have guessed.
The friends I watched with made fun of me for liking Wesley. I found it much more difficult to defend him after this episode.

    1. Totally excited to see this work in progress.
    2. Having just finished re-watching the entire series I have to say… that again I’m TOTALLY EXCITED about this work in progress. Also, Wesley has always rocked. Even if he has helmet hair most of the time.
I love this show. And I really like your reviews because you share part of the show that none of us ever got to see. I so cannot wait! 🙂
    Cheers!

We’ve just finished watching 2nd season – we’re introducing our 13 year old to TNG and one of her favorite characters is Wesley. It would be a grand bonus to get your reviews as well!

Memory Alpha is exhaustively comprehensive. There’s a Trek IRC/email RPG I play in (Star Trek: A Call To Duty; it used to having Paramount sponsorship!), and I use that site as a reference for, like, everything I do in it, just to make sure I’m not doing something that isn’t possible.

    I think you’re just being too critical. That’s Emmy-worthy acting, there. ;P

Stardate is *so* a word. If anything, the original Star Trek series should have solidified that into our collective vocabularies.

Sheesh, give yourself a break already – at 15 most of us are making the odd weak or obvious choice (which is why we don’t get a vote, and are not exactly encouraged to go forth and multiply at that age) – you at least, unlike me and a lot of people, were doing something far braver and more remarkable than stressing over exams, and whether toothpaste would help your acne!
I’m starting TNG at series 1 as of this weekend (I love the post holiday sales!) and am really looking forward to it – not least now that I know that behind annoying nerd kid is a really cool geezer. Peace out, and party on!

Ooh, WIP! Looks like it’s coming along pretty well!
It just occured to me, looking at the picture that goes with the writing, that it could be pretty weird for you to be watching yourself as a teenager. I mean, I watch home movies that my grandparents have of me as a little whelp, and I honestly cannot believe that I was once that young. It makes me feel sad that, at 21, I can’t believe I was a kid or a teenager. *shrugs* Is just the way I think sometimes.
Memory Alpha is pretty cool like that. I’ve won many arguments and about $200 from my fellow Trek fan friends thanks to Memory Alpha. It’s also really great to read if you’re up late and want to read something interesting! Viva Memory Alpha!
(Disclaimer: Anna is currently in the midst of pulling an all-nighter to finish packing for a move up to college later today. She has been dosing herself with Mountain Dew since 6 p.m. EST yesterday evening, and as such, her brain function is slightly wonky. Please forgive any stupidity/inanity/general WTFery this comment may cause.)

Thanks for the warning on Open Office. At least its spell check isn’t as obnoxious as Word 2007’s. (“No! Really! ‘Stardate’ is not a word! And why must you write ‘motherf*****r’ every other line?'”)

I’m going to derail this topic, but what is up with my copy of OO’s spellchecker? It works just fine from a control-click on the document while typing, but when I use the spellcheck tool OO claims it can’t find the dictionary or give suggestions. It obviously hasn’t annoyed me enough to this point to find the damn answer myself . .

Although a decent actor should be self critical, you should give yourself a bit of a break. I am re-watching the series too, halfway through the second season so I’m so happy you are continuing the TNG review in book form, they have been brilliant so far.

We’ve been working our way through Season 1 of TNG, my wife and I (and interspersing it with season 2 of Criminal Minds), via Netflix. At the end of each episode, I bring up your review of that episode and read it aloud to her. Its fun to see you making note of many of the same things (both good and bad) that we comment on to each other during the show.
Sadly, we just finished Angel One. That means we really need you to hurry up with this! 😉
My wife also wants you to know that she thinks she must be the only Star Trek fan who didn’t hate Wesley when she was watching the show on TV (this is not true–I didn’t hate him, either, even if he was a little annoying at times–but I never held you personally responsible for that).
Anyway, the important thing is we eagerly await your next review!

I’m on the last disc of S1 now and have to say Wesley is far cooler than I remembered him, now I’m an adult, and now I’ve been watching them all in sequence from the start… and I really felt for him with all the “if I was an adult you’d have listened” stuff, too.
Ep1 really sucks though imo – Troi’s dress, the regular and innappropriate intrusions by the theme tune, and EVERYONE, even Picard, is as wooden as they come! Of course I love it all anyway, and by ep2 everything’s working pretty well… anyway, just wanted to say you’re not the worse, and the way the character was written, your options were limited.
I probably wouldn’t have bought the series if I’d not stumbled across your blog, so thanks for that too! :o)
