Wil Wheaton's shirt.woot
So if you ever wanted to get a geeky shirt I designed for shirt.woot, now's your chance.

I wanted to call it Critical Mass, because I thought that would be cool and work on a few geeky levels, but I think that idea fell through a hole in the 'tubes.

I chose a d6 instead of a d10 because I thought the d10 looked too much like the d8. The gamer geek in me won't shut up about how lame the d6 is compared to the d10, but the rest of me thinks it was a good choice.

If you like it, give a lot of credit to the person who actually drew it and did the hard work. All I did was think it would look cool, draw a very rough sketch of what I thought it would look like, and make sure the numbers were on the correct faces.

If you don't like it, blame me, because it was my idea.

This little bio they wrote for me is also awesome: "A man of wide and diverse enthusiasms, Wil Wheaton has played in the
World Series of Poker, been a member of the Onion A/V Club, met The
Suicide Girls, authored several books (including Sunken Treasure, out just now), maintained a widely-read and influential blog,
and now ascended to the highest honor of all: featured designer on
Shirt.Woot. Oh, he’s also had a couple of acting roles, we hear."

Edited to add: I just woke up and saw that my shirt is sold out. Um. Wow, that's cool, I guess, but also sad. (Like being drunk, which TV told me makes you feel strange, but also good.) I don't know if this means that it's gone forever, or if they reprint it, or what. I'm just glad that I ordered some of my own for me and my kids last night.

Edited again to add: Happytimes! Reader Steven says:

Come back tonight at midnight and use this link:

http://shirt.woot.com/Friends.aspx?k=8110

It'll be $15 instead of $10… and it will be that way until it falls below the top 20 of the 27 currently printed shirts.

Yay!

I couldn’t agree more that we size things oddly here, and women need geek shirts, too! (I did forget about the chest-shoulder ratio part, too. I guess that was kind of important!)
    Again, Nice design Wil!

Oh, trust me, I’m fun. I’m so damned fun it’s coming out my — in any case, YOU are most certainly fun…
So was his blog good for you too? 🙂
BTW, a simpler answer would have been “yeah, girl shirts are curvier to make men drool more.”
    I’m just sayin’, is all…

It seems it will be on sale again TONIGHT at midnight.
If you go back to the original link – I think I read it will be 15.00 tonight instead of 10.00

Wait, it was $10, but because it is popular they jack the price up 50% to $15?? Um, I understand the priciples of supply and demand, but that is egregious to say the least. I am calling SHENANIGANS! SHENANIGANS!
I like you Wil, but I don’t like the way woot is doing business. I would rather give you the $10 and call it a day.

  6. DS Russell says:
    19 February, 2009 at 9:51 am

$15? SHENANIGANS! SHENANIGANS I say (again)!
Wil, put a stop to this!

So now, after the $15 shirts are sold, based on the laws of supply and demand, we should see one of these on eBay for like twice the price, right?

TypePad Connect, which I use to manage my comments, is in Beta, and one of its great limitations is that it won’t allow blog owners to get into comments and do things like tag maintenence (and why it doesn’t grep for unclosed tags is beyond me, probably would slow the whole posting process down too much, I guess.)
So I have to delete comments that have open tags in them.
Here’s what TwoPynts said in the above comment I was forced to delete to un-bold-ify the page:
I was on the fence, but the energy of those die really spoke to me. Thank your twitter blog for this sale. :o)

  16. PG says:
    19 February, 2009 at 10:31 am

That’s the standard shirt.woot way of doing things. They sell a special item for $10 until it’s sold out or until the day is over (whichever comes first), then offer it for $15 after that, until it’s popularity falls out of the top 20. Every shirt is offered the same way. $15 for a shirt is not much. Sure, $10 would be better, but “the early bird gets the worm” etc etc.

  17. Jaden Kale says:
    19 February, 2009 at 10:38 am

    Russell,
This is what happens, First day prints are a limited number (right now, that number is 3000) 1st prints sell at $10 until 24 hrs are up or all 3k sell out. AFTER the 24 hrs, they go on sale for $15 and what happens then is, in this case, Wil will make an additional $2 for every shirt sold starting tonight at midnight until it falls from the top 20 shirts. If it falls into the bottom 7, it gets cut and it no longer sells on woot.

  18. Graeme says:
    19 February, 2009 at 10:38 am

Thanks a lot Wil. I’d buy a shirt, but the “Strange but also good” line made me laugh so hard that I need the t-shirt money for a new keyboard. This one has tea all over it.

  19. Jaden Kale says:
    19 February, 2009 at 10:40 am

Come back tonight at midnight. I promise you, if you use the link:
    http://shirt.woot.com/Friends.aspx?k=8110
You can get it. it’ll be $15 instead of $10… but Wil makes an additional profit from every shirt.

  20. Jaden Kale says:
    19 February, 2009 at 10:43 am

Probably not… unless people want to try and scam. And believe me, I’ve seen my own shirt up on eBay selling for double its next day price + shipping. XP
So long as people buy it at the site tonight after midnight, Wil gets his cut and you get the shirt without paying a scalper.

Wow. That makes me glad I got two when I did (one male and one female, I wasn’t being that much of a piggy).
(side note: That’s the downside to us East Coasters. We don’t get Wil in person, but apparently, we get an edge on buying his stuff. 😉 )

  23. Wil says:
    19 February, 2009 at 10:54 am

It sounds like the selection of girlie Ts is similar to the selection of Lefty baseball gloves in the sporting goods stores, or the Macintosh games at the computer store back in the 80s.
    I feel your pain.

heh sure here’s the link to the portfolio: Dreaming At Twilight
I assure you, the title of the page was created before the huge draw for ‘Twilight’.
Rumplo has some photos of my 2nd shirt printed at woot. I don’t seem to have many of my first print.

  25. Wil says:

  27. Wil says:

Note to self: do not ever read comments in woot forums.

  28. Craig Steffen says:
    19 February, 2009 at 11:53 am

Yeah, no kidding. I read a few last night soon after the sale, and yeah, there were a lot of dumb ones.
I came back here, and got into a conversation about boobs and dice. (That’s how it happened, honey, I swear! 🙂 )

  29. DS Russell says:
    19 February, 2009 at 11:55 am

Well, business is business I guess, it just makes it hard on us West Coasters to get in on the fun. I checked at 0715 this morning and they were already gone. Do you post launch times for stuff like this?

  30. Craig Steffen says:
    19 February, 2009 at 12:00 pm

    > Order pace: 0m 10.835s
    > Woots sold: 2999
WOW. Now you know–your blog/twitter power can reach enough people to generate a $10 purchase every 10 seconds in a few hours, during part of which, everyone was asleep.
Oh, as far as people getting gypped for not getting a $10 shirt? That’s probably just the printing business model. Woot probably gets a deal to do a one-time run of 3000, and so sells that as the first allotment (analagous to the first printing of a book). After that, the cost increases to reflect that Woot is essentially ordering much smaller numbers at a time.
Now with the apparent volume this sale, it’s probably physically possible for them to get a bunch of orders together and order some at the lower price. However, that would be one of those things that if they did it for Wil, they’d feel obligated to do it for others, and then they’d end up doing it all the time.

  31. warreno says:
    19 February, 2009 at 12:00 pm

Your instincts on the d6 were correct. If you’d had the d10, you would have needed to lose the d8. The shapes are just a little too close to one another to work properly as a graphic.
While a hardcore game geek might scoff at the choice, I wouldn’t worry too much about it, as one expects scoffing from those who have Asperger’s anyway.

  32. Jaden Kale says:
    19 February, 2009 at 12:14 pm

There’s a lot of BS that goes on there… a lot of us want to be sure the site just doesn’t end up all the same kind of print, day after day.
Then there’s just silliness. But with a woot-off going on, that was bound to bring out really odd posts.

  33. itcamefromthedepths.blogspot.com says:
    19 February, 2009 at 12:21 pm

$15 with free shipping starting tomorrow…if only I had gone to buy it when I got the tweet. Oh, damn you procrastination you have cost me 5 dollars.

  34. Jaden Kale says:
    19 February, 2009 at 12:22 pm

All new shirts are posted at 12pm CST. Tonight, Saturday and Sunday at midnight, the top 3 of the derby fog (top 4 contenders) will be printed. Tonight is 1st place, tomorrow is 2nd and Sunday is 3rd.
Monday through Thursday are daily prints (Wil’s is considered a daily) and woot staff pick them from designers and pieces sent to them in submissions.
Dailies usually are told ahead of time, to approve the design will or will not be used, but derby entries are not told of their results until they print.
Every Monday at noon CST, they update the standings for the shirts on the reckoning list If ever this shirt falls to 21st place or lower, it gets cut that Monday evening at midnight CST.

Sorry Wil, my bad for not closing the bold link. It occurred to me after typing it that I probably didn’t. In any event, congrats on the sell-out and now for the new, higher price. It is like an auction, you just never know how much that baby will end up being worth! ;’]

Luckily for you, it doesn’t ‘sell out’ unless it falls from the top 20. So you can buy it any time between tonight at midnight and at least this Monday (though I firmly believe you’ll be able to purchase it for a few weeks). Just watch that reckoning list after this Monday.

I wonder if Wil would design a shirt for Cameesa.com? Unless you’ve got some exclusive agreement with Woot, but then Cameesa advertises with Woot… Of course, all the talented people here are welcome to design a shirt too. I’m sure Wil, in addition to his own talent, is surrounded by talent, smothering in talent, something like that. 😉

I think I missed my save verses this T-shirt and I am going to have to get it. Nice design. I am from the old school of roleplaying and dice bags. Mine was sewn together by my mother out of an old pair of denim jeans I lost my virginity in. Well when I say virginity I mean roleplaying virginity. I was well into my twenties before I got my knob wet, but that’s another story altogether. I now have three dice bags and each one is greater in size then the last. I can’t stop collecting dice. I go into my local comic book/game store and can’t pass buy the dice aisle without picking up at least one stray die. I am on a twelve step program with pills and injections, but it’s obviously not working; I bought two random twenty-siders on Wednesday. I’m hopeless.
