Wil Wheaton's shirt.woot
So if you ever wanted to get a geeky shirt I designed for shirt.woot, now's your chance.

I wanted to call it Critical Mass, because I thought that would be cool and work on a few geeky levels, but I think that idea fell through a hole in the 'tubes.

I chose a d6 instead of a d10 because I thought the d10 looked too much like the d8. The gamer geek in me won't shut up about how lame the d6 is compared to the d10, but the rest of me thinks it was a good choice.

If you like it, give a lot of credit to the person who actually drew it and did the hard work. All I did was think it would look cool, draw a very rough sketch of what I thought it would look like, and make sure the numbers were on the correct faces.

If you don't like it, blame me, because it was my idea.

This little bio they wrote for me is also awesome: "A man of wide and diverse enthusiasms, Wil Wheaton has played in the
World Series of Poker, been a member of the Onion A/V Club, met The
Suicide Girls, authored several books (including Sunken Treasure, out just now), maintained a widely-read and influential blog,
and now ascended to the highest honor of all: featured designer on
Shirt.Woot. Oh, he’s also had a couple of acting roles, we hear."

Edited to add: I just woke up and saw that my shirt is sold out. Um. Wow, that's cool, I guess, but also sad. (Like being drunk, which TV told me makes you feel strange, but also good.) I don't know if this means that it's gone forever, or if they reprint it, or what. I'm just glad that I ordered some of my own for me and my kids last night.

Edited again to add: Happytimes! Reader Steven says:

Come back tonight at midnight and use this link:

http://shirt.woot.com/Friends.aspx?k=8110

It'll be $15 instead of $10… and it will be that way until it falls below the top 20 of the 27 currently printed shirts.

Yay!

You might want to mention that not only is the shirt just $10 but there’s free shipping! That alone pushed me from “maybe…though I’m not really a tabletop gamer” to “heck yeah I’m getting one!”

In for one. Woot. Nice design. I’ll add it to the pile of things for you to sign if you ever make it out to the midwest (Chicago/Indy).

I adore that design; blending geekisms FTW. I also have to note how awesome it is that this shirt is available in girlie-tees, as that is still a bizarre rarity in most geek clothing (all I’ve ever wanted is Venom on my boobs!)

I love the shirt, Wil. That is too cool. I just ordered 3.
I do agree that it would have been nifty to have the canonical D10 on the shirt. However, your reasons are good; I having two dice that look like each other would have muddied the identification of them.
Besides, don’t overlook the humble d6. I realize its the die that was used in things like Yatzee and other games like that. However, the original Star Wars role playing game was entirely based on d6, before it got converted to a d20 system. I loved the original d6 system, it was very simple, tight, and easy to learn and teach. I have many fond memories of playing it, including blasting my future-brother-in-law’s Jawa character at point blank range because he made an incredibly stupid tactical decision. Great days, great days.

    > (all I’ve ever wanted is Venom on my boobs!)
And now you’ll have Wil’s dice there instead? 😀
[I should probably stop commenting before I say something that I’ll regret.]

This is definitely a close second – Boobs + Dice = a good time to be had by all! 😉

    Ok, I’ll bite: (…must ignore double-entendre…)
    > I also have to note how awesome it is that this
    > shirt is available in girlie-tees
So…since you brought it up now I’m curious. Birdchick complains about birder (translation: bird-watchers) T-shirts not coming in girl’s styles/cut/fit/whatever. But I don’t actually know what that means. That style of T-shirt is shaped differently than men’s or generic T-shirts? It tapers, or something? Just curious, and a brief skim of your blog (and your above comment) indicates that you’re not a shy, retiring wallflower.
Thanks for any information; inquiring minds want to know.

  14. ShadokatRegn says:

    >That style of T-shirt is shaped differently than men’s or generic T-shirts?
Girlie tees are definitely cut differently; the sleeves are shorter (much like the difference between the length of mens and womens shorts,) and the mid section is tapered inward. Generic male tee shirts end up looking very boxy on women in general.
Also the sizes are insanely different: mens small fits me like a two-person tent, whereas womens small fits just right.
Every time I go to my local comic book store, I spend a fair amount of energy kicking and screaming for even a small selection of girlie tees. Maybe if I wear this bad boy (or in this case, girl) in there, they’ll understand why.
    >Just curious, and a brief skim of your blog (and your above comment) indicates that you’re not a shy, retiring wallflower.
Lol, no, I’m not – I’m sure Wil would love me to get off his blog with this stuff, though – so I will.

I debated it long and hard, since I’m unemployed, Australian, and have bills to pay (ok ok, just one bill, and darkfall releasing soon, and an art commission of my and my friends’ characters..) but hey, ~$24 dollars won’t set me back too long, and that is one sweet shirt.

  18. valmiras.livejournal.com says:

Awesome shirt, Wil! Just ordered 2!
If anyone gives you any crap about the d6 over the d10, just explain that the d10 is not a platonic solid, whereas the d6 is, so that is why you did it!

Awesome job, you widely read and influential geek blogger you. Is this the part where we say “all hail teh Wil” and set about building a giant fortress made of Necco wafers?

In addition to what ShadokatRegn mentioned women’s cut shirts also have a smaller shoulder to chest ratio. Most geeky shirts I have are men’s sizes (XL) because I need the room in the chest and stomach. But they fit like boxy tents because the shoulder seam goes down to my mid bicep in addition to the sleeves just being longer. Sleeves on men’s tees end up hitting just below my elbow. In contrast the women’s cut shirts I have give me the same room in the chest but have shorter shoulders and sleeves meaning I don’t look like I’m wearing a tent.
@ShadokatRegn I totally know what you mean about trying to get geeky shirt sellers to make women’s sizes. In my case if they sell them at all they don’t sell them in big enough sizes. I’m a few inches too big for an American Apparel/Threadless/ThinkGeek women’s 2XL. The way we size clothing is totally bizarre.
However, even though I will be wearing a boxy shirt I totally ordered one. Nice design, Wil!

  30. Marcus says:

I think someone used a bold tag in their comment and didn’t close it, so I just threw one in. Just in case type thing.
Anyway, I am VERY saddened the shirt is sold out. Please, Wil. Convince them to produce more!

I am so upset, wake up, feed the kids, get the coffee, go to the computer to see Wil Wheaton’s shirt, thinking that even though I’m normally a closet geek must order one–while trying to come up with good excuse to hubby as to why I spent $10 on a geek shirt, see SOLD OUT…what will I do, I might cry, it isn’t fair, it’s only like 8:30 AM!!!

I agree – it seems like the had, what… 100 shirts for sale? that really sucks.
They should just SELL the shirts for as a time period to see how well it does… I would have liked to have displayed my piece of Wil Awesomeness – guess not.
