As promised, Sunken Treasure is now officially on sale!
I have created two editions, a US Edition and a World Edition. They are identical in content, but the World Edition is in a slightly larger format, so it's $2.00 more. The trade off is that you don't have to spend a million dollars on shipping if you're not in the US. NOTE: Canadian customers have informed me that, by choosing the US edition, they can save $2 + GST. Yay!
Everything you ever wanted to know about Sunken Treasure (but were afraid to ask) can be found in this entry. Here's the book's description at Lulu:
Sunken Treasure is a short collection of my favorite pieces from my books and blog, including a production diary from my 2008 role in Criminal Minds, and excerpts from a collaborative fiction I took part in called Ficlets. As a bonus feature, it also includes the never-before-seen script to a sketch I wrote and performed at the ACME Comedy Theater.
If you ever wanted to know where to start with all my writing, Sunken Treasure is the book for you.
The book is 90 pages long. The US edition is $13 + shipping, and the world edition is $15 +shipping.
Some of you may notice that I missed my noon Pacific release time today by about an hour. That's because, at 11:30 this morning, I got a crazy awesome idea (one in a series, it would seem): As a bonus and a thank you, for the next 48 hours everyone who purchases the book will get to download a live audio performance of See a Little Light, an outtake from Happiest Days of Our Lives, which I included in Sunken Treasure, because it turns out that I liked it a lot, and shouldn't have cut it from Happiest Days in the first place. When you place your order, you should get a thank you e-mail, which will have a link to the file's download location. I'll keep that link alive until about 1pm Pacific on Friday, when it will be sent to the land of wind and ghosts.
I'm super crazy excited that everyone who wants this, no matter where they are in the whole world, has a chance to get it, and I can't wait to hear your feedback.
I know that some of you are interested in the practical nuts and bolts of how this whole thing came together, what it was like to use Lulu, why I'm trying out Lulu, and some other publisher-y things. I've kept a lot of notes about this whole experience, and I'll put all this stuff in its own post, probably next week some time.

W00T!! *whips out the plastic* 🙂
I can’t wait! Also, the Criminal Minds bit is exciting; I love that show!
I got mine, Wil!
That was a no-brainer purchase. I should pay attention more closely next time and be sure to bring money to the conventions you attend to pick up these little gems – I was unaware you were doing this at the last comi-con you attended in San Jose.
Thank you for making it available to the rest of us!
Bill Teeple
San Jose, CA
Thanks for this. For those of us in the vast, ignored middle of the country, who can’t make it to conventions on the coasts, it’s tres cool of you to offer stuff like this so we can partake of the geeky goodness as well.
Where’s the Kindle edition, Wil?
I ordered a copy … is it too dorky to say that the biggest kick out of the whole process so far was seeing the “From: Wil Wheaton” email in my inbox?
Looking forward to the audio and the book! Congrats on the launch.
Excellent, it is bought. Many thanks for thinking of us here in “the-rest-of-the-world”(TM) 😉 England in this case, and I got the whole thing with express delivery (I always get paranoid that these things will be lost in the post) for a mere 15 quid. Marvellous, thanks again! Looking forward to this bonus content, too.
I used to read your blog religiously back at university (and bought Just a Geek ofc!), but I haven’t kept up in recent times so this should be good for me to catch up with.
John
Signed, sealed, and soon to be delivered.
Thanks for this, Wil, and thanks for the sign off in the e-mail. I got quite the kick out of it. Back at ya!
Excellent bonus idea Wil!
Oh, and hey W, Frakes gave you a shoutout in a TV Squad interview http://www.tvsquad.com/2009/02/10/jonathan-frakes-the-tv-squad-interview-video/
If there’s enough demand for a digital version, and a kindle version, I’d be happy to create one.
Coolness! Very much looking forward to getting my copy! The cover is hypnotic and… and… feeling sleepy…
Pro tip for Canadians: get the US edition… you don’t pay more for shipping, and you save the $2 (which you then lose on GST).
Bought mine and one for the hubby as well. Can’t wait to read this, I was kicking myself for not buying it at PAX!
You know, Wil, I just checked it out. According to the latest “Terms and Conditions” you’d only net 35% of your MSRP. Does that seem out of line? Especially for a product with so little overhead for them? I’m no writer or publisher, so I don’t know.
I guess I see only two benefits to Kindle publishing – Amazon is huge and people go there to find stuff; and they provide copy protection for those creators inclined to use it.
I think that net is if you use them as a distributor through Amazon or some other online seller. I’m not doing that, because I’m counting on the reach I have with my blog to let people know about it.
That retail split, though, seems a lot better than what the average author gets if they are published by a traditional publisher. I think the rate that most mid-list authors get is closer to 10 or 12 percent, not 35.
But I’m not positive, so take this with the appropriate grains of salt and disclaimers.
Are you ever going to have it as an eBook? That would be super awesome! (And yes, I’ll pay for it, like I do all the Star Trek ebooks I get from Simon&Schuster….)
Actually, I bought a sony PRS-505 earlier this year and have been buying most of my books in various digital formats since then. I’d really love to see the whole Wil Wheaton back catalogue available on such devices. My understanding (which could be wrong) is that most digital formats are based on the ePUB format. So, assuming your books are currently typeset in a strict format (without reflow), I guess it would mean some investment to convert them to these formats. It would definitely be awesome though.
Soon, sunshine, soon. A little strapped for cash right now, but I assure you, ALL your books are on my DO WANT list.
Woohoo, February gets kicked up a notch to “super awesome”!
Now, any news on the Subterranean Press Happiest Days Special Edition? Any chance I’ll be unwrapping it on my birthday in a couple of weeks time? 😉
Oh, bum. I’m an idiot. (A British one, at that, who’s very grateful for the chance to buy Wil!stuff. Hurrah for t’interweb!)
But I used a non-existent email address on my lulu order, (note to self: don’t buy stuff in the middle of the night), so I guess I’ve missed out on the audio performance. 🙁
I have made my purchase so I guess I am now officially one of the ‘Wil Wheaton POD People’.
Purchased! Also, contemplating buying it for family near the end of the year since it’ll be up there, ready to be printed.
Cheers!
Ordered 🙂 And I’m looking forward to hearing about your experience with Lulu… I’m debating between this and blurb.com for a photo book.
…and you still don’t have any of your events for 2009 listed at eventful?
Writing this as I listen to your story “See a Little Light”. I really like this 😀 Thanks Wil
I’m not an author or publisher, but by the level a linkage from other literary pros (Neil Gaiman and the Neilsons (editors at Tor)), I would say that the blog of Miss Snark was fairly well informed.
A brief directed Google search to the Snarkives brought this post up:
http://misssnark.blogspot.com/2006/01/wholesale-pricethe-new-giant-squid-of.html
The executive summary seems to be that per book, it depends on where the book sold. Your local bookstore, 10%. At Walmart or the like, 6 to 8%.
Purchase: DONE. Can’t wait!
Keep up the AWESOME work, Wil. You hit a homerun on TWiT this past Sunday.
I’d love to buy a digital copy via the Sony Reader.
Wil I haven’t been to your site as much as I would like to lately due to school, but I still try to keep up with your work. I didn’t even know you were coming out with a new book. However, the second your page loaded up and I saw the post about your book on sale I was logging on to lulu.com within minutes to buy a copy. Thats how amazing of an author you are to me. No other author has ever had that much of an influence on me to buy something from them without giving a seconds thought. You however have accomplished that and that is why you are my favorite author Wil. I can’t wait to get this book in the mail and read your posts all over again. 🙂 Congratulations on another book Wil 🙂
-Alex
Wil — done and done. Thanks a lot for making the price reasonable, too. Can’t wait to get my hands on this one. Guess I’ll listen to my Just a Geek audiobook until it gets here.
-moe
Wait–huh? Do I have to sign up for a membership on their web site to buy the book? I can’t figure out how to get to checkout without doing that. Their EULA is almost 6000 words and a brief skim indicates it mostly pertains to sellers, not buyers.
Or am I just missing a link?
Pod people unite!! Thank you Wil, you wonderfully considerate man!
I’m in! Just bought my copy. Since we can’t do it ourselves, have your wife or son walk over and give you a hug on behalf of all the people you’ve made quite happy today. Looking forward to reading more of your wry, insightful observations.
If the title of the short story and live audio version “See A Little Light” is a slick shout-out to the Bob Mould song of the same name, your reading on my fuckingcooldudeometer will shoot so high that it’ll possibly display in complex notation, or maybe Klingon (It rarely ever goes that far so I forget.)
Thanks for giving the people what they want, Wil.
Indeed, I too am now one of your pod persons (though at my heart, I’m a Paul and Storm Centurion [a class of Minion]).
I’ve used Lulu before for some roleplaying books that I’m too embarrassed to admit I had anything to do with, but I don’t remember the shipping being that high.
Who on earth would need any book so bad that they’re willing to drop over $100 for über-quick shipping. For that kind of price, I had better be getting that shit yesterday.
Seriously.
And not only should it arrive yesterday, it should arrive yesterday delivered by a totally-naked Grace Park who I have to beg to stop trying to have sex with me.
Or, um, you know, media mail works, too.
Has anyone else payed via Paypal? I have had an auto receipt mail from them but nothing from Lulu. Just logged in to Lulu and it says ‘waiting_funds’. I paid 10 hours ago. I wouldn’t usually be bothered but I don’t want to miss out on ‘See a Little Light’. Anyone else had this?
I know that some of you are interested in the practical nuts and bolts of how this whole thing came together, what it was like to use Lulu, why I’m trying out Lulu, and some other publisher-y things. I’ve kept a lot of notes about this whole experience, and I’ll put all this stuff in its own post, probably next week some time.
That would be interesting. I’ve currently got a book published POD via a small press publisher (Magnum Opus Press) on Lightning Source, but Lulu might be handy if I just want to do some small projects on my own.
And I’ll repeat what other people have said above that it’s good that people this side of the Atlantic (UK) can easily get it. I got Just a Geek and a copy of Dancing Barefoot from Amazon, but but didn’t get round to Happiest Days because I figure the shipping would be a load. (Apologies if it wasn’t, and that was a bad assumption).
But I will pick up Sunken Treasure.
Great great great!
One of your books ist now on the way to Germany, Wil – I’m looking forward to reading it!!!
Nicole
Okay, bought – as promised – and blogged about. Ish.
(I’ll do a proper post about it after I’ve had a chance to read it).
I’ve just listened to “See a Little Light”… a tip of the hat to you, sir – a great recording, and a great story.
A copy of “Sunken Treasure” will be on it’s way to Japan in a few days, and I can’t tell you how excited I am. I’ve never managed to get my hands on any of your earlier books (something I must rectify soon!)… thank you for making it so easy and straightforward to order this one.

@Kate: I just paid with PayPal and I’ve had a an email from Lulu, and my order status is “Paid”. But I haven’t had an email with a link to the download, so I hope that will come soon.
When you first posted about going a print on demand route, I thought to myself, “I wonder if he’ll use lulu?”
Sure enough you are, and in my limited experience I think you made a great choice. I look forward to getting my copy.
Kate,
Did you have funds in your paypal account, or did it have to pay as an echeck? An eCheck can take up to 4 days to process.
My bad. I paid with an eCheck. Should have used my card.
No worries about ‘See a Little Light’. Being able to get Sunken Treasure in the UK makes up for it. Thanks Wil!
I will buy it once my taxes come in, =D
All ordered! Really looking forward to this coming through my door.
Good luck, hope you make many many sales, mon ami 🙂

Hey Wil, first off let me say thank you for putting this out there and for putting all the little extra touches on it, I’m really looking forward to reading the book. I of course have ordered the book, but it seems the link in the e-mail I received is broken I’m not sure if it’s a Thunderbird thing, a Firefox thing or a link is broken thing. Can anyone help me out?
E-mail me, Kate.
Ha HA! ha. Figured it out. It was a Thunderbird thing.
Hi Wil. Congrats! Any way to reach you to discuss possibility of doing an appearance in conjunction with the book?
Sure. E-mail me when you get a chance. The contact page is around here somewhere.
Thanks, Wil. Just sent you an email to the address on your contact page. I’m sure you get a ton of emails, so keep an eye out for something from Maret Orliss.
