some penny arcade/pvp/me d&d podcast stuff

  • WWdN in Exile

I think I forgot to mention this last week, but Episode 4 of the Penny Arcade/PvP/Me D&D Podcast is available, and the artwork is super awesome. Seriously. I'm not just saying that because the drawing was inspired by something I did during the session, or because it features everyone's favorite eladrn avenger.

Okay, maybe I am, just a little bit … but it's still awesome.

Episode five is in iTunes, and is a massive 68 minutes long, which will make people (like me) who were sad when they (we) saw that episode four was just 25 minutes long. It looks like they haven't updated the podcast page at Wizards, yet, though, so I don't know what the artwork is going to look like. Reader TheOceaneer used URL-mangling fu to find the link. Holy carp, the artwork is hilarious.

Also, I noticed that they have links for all eight episodes of the first podcast, which you may want to listen to, if you're enjoying the current series:

Archive: Series 1

Interested in listening to the first Penny Arcade/PvP podcast series? We've archived all episodes below, for your convenience.

  • Episode 1
  • Episode 2
  • Episode 3
  • Episode 4
  • Episode 5
  • Episode 6
  • Episode 7
  • Episode 8

The first series of podcasts did more than entertain me and get me excited to play 4E. Listening to different DMs handle different encounters with three players of widely varying levels of experience gave me a perspective on running and playing the game that I wouldn't have otherwise had, and when it was over, I'd gained a level in gaming.

Awesome, these podcasts are compelling listening, I’ve been looking forward to these each week 🙂

The page is up (and the artwork is inspired), it’s just not linked yet. Respect my URL-mangling-fu!

These are awesome, I downloaded the latest episode last night and was listening on my drive to work. Any idea why this one is longer compared to the rest?
I’ve listened to probably about half so far, to the start of the second encounter, and I like that there’s more puzzle solving / investigation / dissection than the previous set.
ETA: Oh man, that dwarf picture is so great.

These are awesome to listen to.
They clipped a part out of this one right at the beginning…at the end of last episode it was Wil’s turn, and at the beginning of this one the Dwarf has apparently been swallowed by the metal chompy monster.
Sounds like they clipped out a round or two. Maybe that’s why the last podcast was so short…maybe that was an accident.

Man – thought I’d be first! I’m going to pickup PHB #2 today.
Love the podcast, except for how the end so abruptly. Looking forward to listening to the latest one.
Wil, you haven’t mentioned it – are you thinking about going to True Realm, a True Dungeon adventure in Carbondale, IL, the first weekend in April? I’m going as a volunteer DM.

    Kickass! I’ve updated the post.

I wish I could go to True Realm, but I’m not going to make it out there this year.
I loved True Dungeon, even though a jerkface DM did her best to ruin it for me when I played.

Can I just say I’m loving the recurrent “when all else fails, set the dwarf on fire” motif. Like Beckett, but with more flaming dwarves.

So Wil, any plans for “Al” to continue his exploits elsewhere, or are you intending to stick to the DM’s chair for now?

I totally forgot about the podcasts. I chalk it up to being sick. Yay! This one is over an hour long.

    His. Name. Is. Aeofel.
    GOSH!
    😉
I would *luuurrrvvvve* to do another series of podcasts with my friends like these, especially since we all know what we’re doing now. I’d really love to see what happens with Acquisitions, Incorporated when we all get up to 6th level.
For the near future, though, it looks like I’m going to be running this game for my son and his friends more than actually playing myself.

If that’s the case, then perhaps you would consider doing podcasts of the games you’re running with your group – provided they give permission, of course.
BTW, PHB2 arrived yesterday from Amazon. And don’t forget about D&D Worldwide Game Day:

You get +1 for the Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid reference (even though it got zero response at the table)

Inspired is right! I’ll confess that I’m not terribly familiar with his work, but this is definitely the best work of his that I’ve ever seen.

+2 for the awesome death scene you acted out. I’d have done a spit take if I’d be drinking anything at the time. Seriously, that’s going to be my new sig.

  16. Russell says:

Where are the other Podcasts? I’d like to download them all and listen to them en masse when I work the late shift here in a few weeks @ work 🙂

  17. Factoid says:
    18 March, 2009 at 11:14 am

Yes please! More podcasts! With video too, even!
Heck I’d even pay for it.
I like the idea of everyone going up a level or two each time. I love seeing all the new powers everyone has chosen this time and everyone has a much more customized, fully featured character this time around.
It obviously make a big difference playing a character that you designed yourself versus just playing one handed to you on a sheet of paper. You can tell everyone is having more fun with their characters.

Dude, you KNOW I was digging on this this morning. What you guys are doing around the table is what I LOVE about D&D–the player humor. I don’t even care about the version of the game. You fit in with that trio PERFECTLY. Your sense of humor was/is right on point. That thing about rolling the “1” for attack, and you explained that Aeofel was still trying to get the sword out of the scabbard. L. O. L.
I heard someone taking pictures. When are we ever going to see those. Your description was great, but you KNOW what we want…!
I envy Nolan–what a lucky kid!! Wil Wheaton, BEST. STEPDAD. EVER.

“I envy Nolan–what a lucky kid!! Wil Wheaton, BEST. STEPDAD. EVER”
Only issue I have with this is he may technically be his stepather, he’s still his Dad. I call my stepfather- dad. So I’m going to amend that and Say Wil Wheaton, BEST. DAD. EVER (aside from me!)

I must say, I am *very* fond of setting Dwarves on fire. They can take it, it just scares the bad guys more. 🙂
You did awesome in that game! You seem to prefer ranged attacks so you forgetting to add your weapon prof bonus isn’t really affecting you.
I recently saw a post somewhere that likened the Avenger class to Batman. It totally made sense too.

    Off to read PHB2!

On a note completely unrelated to your blog (which is great), wanted to get some kind of contact info so I can invite you to a convention in October 2010, in Atlantic Canada.
    thanks. 🙂

I assume the length of the podcast is a good thing, but you missed a word, so I can’t confirm it. “…which will make people who were sad when they saw that episode four was just 25 minutes long.” Gah! Make them what? I’m guessing ‘elated’; please to confirm.
    Best,

Hey Wil, I was just watching Jeopardy and guess who was his own Answer? The question of course was What is Star Trek TNG? But the Answer was Something about Wil Wheaton being a bigger geek than Geordi or something along those lines.! way to go!

Buddy! Today’s double Jeopardy clue worth $1200 (during championship week no-less) was “saying ‘star trek’ and geek is redundant, but Wesley Crusher might have even outnerded Geordi on this series”. BTW – the category was geek TV. They guy that got it simply said, “what is TNG”. Threw Alex for a second, but he accepted it.

Wil, just wanted to say that between the two series of podcasts and the posts you’ve been making lately, I was finally convinced to make my husband incredibly happy and participate in the gaming group we host at our apartment. I worked with the GM to have it be a total surprise and Sarah Darkmagic (cousin of Jim) joined their party. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the podcasts for your group.

I’m just wondering why nobody thought of taking down the scaffolding the DM specifically described as “rickety” at the beginning.
Could have taken out two crossbowmen and the thief under it.
    Ah well, coulda woulda shoulda.

  29. Wil says:
    19 March, 2009 at 9:15 am

You mean the scaffolding that Jim set on fire?

  30. Shayde says:
    19 March, 2009 at 9:34 am

Yeah. Take out a couple supports and it’d have come tumbling down.
At least that’s what I took from his description. Fire was a good idea, but I’m thinking enough force in the right spot would’ve been impressive.
Oh, and this makes me want to game again.. hard.
