50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Leverage – The Two Live Crew Job

  • WWdN in Exile

Early feedback from tonight's episode of Leverage is overwhelmingly positive, which delights me. I'm so happy to hear that so many people liked it.

If you've seen the show already, you may get a kick out of the pictures I took during production and just added to Flickr, but there are spoilers, so don't look if you don't want to see them. (And no fair complaining at me if you don't listen and get spoiled.)

I'm sure John will have a post at his blog in the very near future where you can ask him questions about the spin-off (with robots!) that I'm getting.*

If you have questions or comments for me about the show, feel free to leave them here and I'll do my best to respond in a timely manner. Seriously, I'll really appreciate the distraction.

*I'm not really getting a spin-off. That's my little joke. Ha! Ha! I am using the Internet!

Leverage is my favorite so I was going to watch it anyway, but Wil it was great seeing you on TV again as I don’t watch much of it, I’ve missed some of your most recent work. I love the comments about other roles you played, but all that kept going through my mind with the technical/electronic comments is Welsey Crusher.

Great chemistry with Hodge, and nice to see someone capable of challenging him.
Would very much like to see you reprise this role.
Would REALLY like to see Chaos go to work for Jim Sterling.
    Hopefully Dean reads tweets, anyhow.

Wil, fantastic episode! Great fun all the way through, and I really hope to see Chaos return at some point in the future!
When you blogged about the shooting of the episode, you mentioned an incident where one of the locals came up and asked you a question while you were in the middle of a scene. Understandably, you could not say much more about it at the time, but now that we have seen the episode, can you give any more details?

  4. Wil says:
    26 August, 2009 at 10:20 pm

You bet! I wrote all about it with a picture from that day that I just put up at Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wilwheaton/3861179514/

…and then Tazzmann followed the link to Flickr that Wil provided in his post, found the answer he was seeking, and sheepishly returned to lurk status. :-p
Seriously, that’s a great story, and we really did enjoy the episode very much. We will be watching for the return of Chaos! =)

Awesome episode… loved it… classic Wil though, caught speechless with his hand in the cookie jar LOL epic

Just wanted to say thank you. Discovered your blog through twitter a few months ago. Now I know about Leverage, and had a good time reading “Just a Geek”. These are GOOD things. Tonight’s ep was my favorite! Worth rushing the kids off to bed for.

loved the episode. you nerd smack talk with the best of them man.

  9. Wil says:

That moment was *so* much fun to shoot. We did it a bunch of times, and it was really important to me that the moment stay comedic, but real. It’s really easy to overdo it in those situations and cross the line into “mugging,” which is lame.
Luckily for me, I had a great director who I could trust to keep me centered and grounded.

  10. Wil says:
    26 August, 2009 at 10:43 pm

Thanks. We did a whole lot more trash-talking that didn’t make the final cut. I hope we can all see it some day, because I recall it being pretty funny.

PAX is only a week away…god that’s frightening…at least I get time off of my Enforcer duties to see your panel. Also…great show tonight, as an ex-Gentoo developer I always get a kick out of faked *nix systems on TV shows.

  12. Kevin says:

    Greatly enjoyed the episode.
Since I was wandering Portland just a short while after you filmed there I recognized those great exteriors.
Oh, and your ‘trigger finger’ instinct really did make that show-down shot.
Did you have to stay cooped up in the back of that van for multiple jumping-out shots?
    Kevin.

Great show, Wil. Best of the season yet. Very fun and the opposing team gave it a new spin. Awesome!
Are we seeing a trend with your characters? Chaos in Leverage and Axis of Anarchy in The Guild. Whats next, Hacker Havoc or Digital Disarray? Maybe you could be a super-villain.

  14. Max Bell says:
    26 August, 2009 at 11:21 pm

That would make a really nice addition to the gag real.

Wil, I’ve been reading your blog for years, and as an aspiring writer and geek, you have been nothing less than inspirational. Thank you for making geeky writers into smart, sensitive (and cool) human beings. You were amazing on Leverage – one of the greatest shows of years-of-late.
Do you have any advice for a single-mom-geek who wants to change the world by making her daughter a better person than herself?

  16. Wil says:
    26 August, 2009 at 11:58 pm

Yeah, we did. The timing on that was really tricksy, but I think it was worth it.

  17. Brantyr says:

Just watched this episode and really enjoyed it, all the showdowns were hilarious but I’m slightly disappointed they didn’t show the ending to the nerd fight! Also regarding the trailer, nice kilt! Can’t wait for the guild season 3.

  18. Sandra L. says:

That was the best episode of Leverage I’ve seen yet – though, granted, it’s normally something I only half-watch while the rest of the family watches. The “High Noon” moment was hysterical and I totally wasn’t expecting the ending.
Hope your van wasn’t too “whiffy”!

Any Canadians (specifically BC) know if Leverage is shown up here? It sounds like a fantastic show, and I can’t believe I’d never heard of it before this summer. I had to skip reading the comments in this thread to avoid spoilers, assuming I can fins the show sometime.

  20. julrosec.livejournal.com says:
    27 August, 2009 at 12:33 am

Yes! Use it before it uses you!
Haven’t gotten to see the ep yet, but look forward to it, given the show, I can only imagine it’ll be fun.

    Wil,
This episode of Leverage is my first foray into the series. And I really enjoyed it.
Out of all the roles I’ve seen you in so far (CSI, Numb3rs, Leverage and Criminal Minds), this has to be my favorite role; this role personified what you are better than the other shows.
When this episode airs in New Zealand, I will watch it again and will persuade others to do so as well.
Thanks for being part of a series that I’m keen on exploring further. 🙂

  22. Oenone says:
    27 August, 2009 at 12:53 am

I’m assuming this was to counter Hardison’s notorious love for orange soda…

  23. Oenone says:
    27 August, 2009 at 12:59 am

There was so much pure awesome in this episode, all packed into 43 minutes of goodness. Great, great job. I’m very excited for the Chaos robot spin-off, I must say.
    Just one question:
Is Noa Tishby actually *that hot* in person? I think she turned me gay. I’m at least looking into it. You know, doing research, weighing the pros and cons, that sort of thing.

  24. Michael Stewart says:
    27 August, 2009 at 1:08 am

    Wil,
What a hoot of an episode! By far the best “Leverage” epi to date. The Kobyashi Maru reference cracked me up! You’re looking good, man. Hope this leads to more appearances on other shows in the near future.
Good work by one and all. The cast tears me up every time!

  26. Foxie says:

Okay, well, do you know if there are any plans for those of us in the UK to see the episode? I mean, I’m sure I could find a site I could watch it at, but I’d spend the entire episode scared of the FBI beating my door down and dragging me off to some dubious 2nd world country for stealing from the great American media industry…

  27. Teresha Duncan says:
    27 August, 2009 at 3:46 am

I am saving the show for later today, since I’m like elderly and stuff. Well, older than you, anyway. But I’m really psyched to watch it!

  28. Cholma says:
    27 August, 2009 at 3:52 am

Just saw this episode. Leverage is a great show (Parker! *swoon*) and you, Mister “Kobayashi Maru”, were awesome in this episode. Your final scene made me LOL.
Your hacker name should have been “KAOS” instead of “Chaos”. 🙂

  29. Cholma says:
    27 August, 2009 at 4:01 am

And . . . I just saw that someone else already mentioned KAOS. Doh! 😉

  30. Phil73805 says:

I just want to know whether or not Leverage is ever going to come to the UK? When it does presumably we’ll see the episode.

    Hey Wil,
I never saw Leverage till you said you were going to be on it. But after you turned me into a CSI addict after I watched that with you in it, I figured I’d give this a go. I’ve been playing catchup on Netflix (via 360) to watch the first season while tivo’ing the second and wanted to thank you for turning me onto yet another awesome and fun show.
It was a great episode last night, really enjoyed it! Great work, hope to see Chaos square off against Hardisan again!

  32. bogdana says:
    27 August, 2009 at 5:04 am

I never watch TV at night so I put it on and imagine my surprise to see you on Leverage! First ep I’ve ever seen actually. I appreciated the TOS joke which apparently was in there before you were cast, so, smooth job writers.
PS you do crazy well… is that good? 😉
    BJ

UGH! I wish I had cable! I have to wait until Friday so that it is on Netflix. I had to stop reading the comments since there are so many spoilers. Congrats on what seems to be a job well done!

  34. Sithinious says:
    27 August, 2009 at 5:49 am

Awesome. My favorite Leverage yet, and not just because of the cast. My first thought when it was over was “I hope they bring Wil and the rest of that crew back for another episode”. My second thought was “I hope Wil never sends me flowers”. :)~

That was an awesome episome, man! All the Star Trek jokes, Christian Kane speaking Hebrew and of course- your part. Simply great.
Just a small thing- the only reason I started watching the show is you twitting that you will be on it, so thanks for getting me hooked on a good show… [:
    [“little keyboard monkey” lol]

I’m sitting in bed, waiting for Leverage to cue up on my DVR and they showed the preview shots right before the show. I caught that quick glimpse of you and scared the crap out of my cats by applauding! Fantastic job, I truly enjoyed it.

Just watched the episode last night (gotta love TiVo!) The whole cast did a great job, and you were great in the part. There was only one thing they got wrong with your character that I could tell….
The name never would have been Chaos. It would have been Kaos, or Cha0s (with a zero), or ka0s (also a zero), or kA0z (again a zero – the hacker community love to use zero instead of o), or… well, you get the idea. I’m surprised they missed that detail.
    Fantastic job all around though.

    Hey Wil,
I’ve been lurking on your blog for awhile and really enjoying your posts. Imagine my joy when I saw you were going to guest on one of my favorite shows! (The joy was epic, just so you know). Your ep was my favorite of this season so far. The geek showdown was hysterical.
I manage a bunch of geeks at my library and all of us made sure to tune in. Here’s hoping Leverage brings Chaos back for an appropriately geeky plan of revenge…
    Awesome job!

Awesome episode. I just started watching Leverage on netflix instant watch when you said you were going to be appearing. Awesome show. I’m only like halfway through the first season, but I skipped ahead (something I don’t normally do) to watch your episode.
Fortunately Leverage is one of those shows where you don’t really need to watch every episode to know what’s going on, so it didn’t even feel out of order to me.
p.s. the showdown finger-twitch was hilarious, though I balked a bit at how they made you do the stereotypical “type real fast hacking”. Apparently Hardison can hack with just a wireless keyboard, which is pretty impressive…Chaos had to use a wimpy netbook.

    Wil,
That was a fantastic episode. I believe it was the best I’ve seen yet. You did a fabulous job as Chaos and I hope I get the chance to see him again. And like others, I agree with linke about the Kobayashi Maru line. Great work Wil.

What a great episode! You were a perfect opposite for the Hacker. I would love to see you in future episodes, and thanks to the vague ending I might see you on there again. I think last night was good for you. It boosted your morale at a time when you would need it.

Hopefully we see you on Leverage again. Seriously, the show rocks and you made it even better. This episodes was probably one of our favorite episodes, you playing a big part in that. The rivalries were fantastic, especially Chaos and Hardison.
