50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

I still don’t know very much about brain scans…

  • WWdN in Exile

Here are three Star Trek-themed things that have come up recently. All of them made me laugh so hard I pooped a little, so they need to be preserved here for the ages.

First, from Jimmy James, Inc:

Wesley_dance_crew

For the record, Wesley's dance crew was called Jiffy and da Popz.

Next: Last night, Paul of Paul and Storm made WesLOL Crusher:

LOLWESLEYLOL

It's a little uncanny how much it fits with the original image, isn't it?

Finally, this place is real and exists:

Picardlaneandcrusheravenue

For those of you who are scratching your heads right now, that's the intersection of Crusher Avenue and Picard Lane, around the corner from WARP DRIVE. WARP-FUCKING-DRIVE!

BAM!

How on earth does house numbering work in the US? Google Maps satellite view shows five houses in Warp Drive. Google Streetview says they are numbered 1708 to 1726. I’m trying, and failing, to see how that makes any kind of sense.
Although it does explain my childhood wonderment at how contact addresses in comic book adverts implied that streets in America were so much longer than those here in the UK. I mean, if the first couple of thousand addresses in a street don’t actually exist…!

That’s awesome! The best we have in Toronto is an intersection of Clinton St and Gore St. Was famous for a few years there 😉

The area round Apollo Drive, Nottingham has some geek cred I think.

Yeah, I used to deliver pizza in an Ann Arbor neighborhood which streets included Hiscock, Cherry, Spring, Fountain, and Felch… individually not too bad but put together seems… gross. I prefer WARP DRIVE SIR! Four light lane?

The last two digits are the house number. The digits before those are the number of blocks from 0. Example: Main Street is 0 so when you go west for 15 blocks on say, Warp Dr., the address would be 15** W. Warp Dr. Even if Warp Dr. doesn’t exist for more than 2 or 3 blocks, it picks up the numbering system to stay constant with other addresses. Also, Even numbers are on one side, odd on the other. Like, South side of the street and West sides have odd, North and East have Even numbers.

If you zoom into the street view of the intersection there is a kid wearing a red shirt next to the trash can.

Unfortunately, there is no ‘Impulse Ln’. I’m not sure why Wil’s map has that.

I had to Google Maps that to see for myself if it was real. Who ever named that set of streets must have been a Trek fan. But I always though it was Riker not Ryker…or am I just being stupid? I had a look at street view, it looks like a nice neighbourhood.

Okay, I have you all beat on this one. I have been an elected government official for the last four years. For all of that time, I have taken more than my share of grief from my critics for openly being a fan of Star Trek. But I made it all pay off when, as my last official act in office, I voted to rename “Steeplechase Drive” to “Warp Drive” for the benefit of (and I am not making this up) Orbital Sciences Corporation. See http://maps.google.com/maps?q=steeplechase+drive,+sterling+va&hl=en&ll=39.013161,-77.431254&spn=0.001897,0.004823&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.701751,79.013672&vpsrc=6&hq=steeplechase+drive,&hnear=Sterling,+Loudoun,+Virginia&t=h&z=18 for the location (and check back later to see when the name has changed).
For those seeking a more stimulating address, have a look nearby in my county at this: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Pon+Farr+Ct,+Leesburg,+VA+20175&hl=en&ll=39.032553,-77.624406&spn=0.000948,0.002411&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.701751,79.013672&vpsrc=6&hnear=Pon+Farr+Ct,+Leesburg,+Virginia+20175&t=h&z=19. As far as I can tell, this name dates back to the ’70s.
I may not have been the highest ranking public officer who ever watched an episode of TOS, but I will always be able to say that I was, literally, the creator of “Warp Drive.”

In Hillsborough NJ, the next town over from where I live, there’s a development with the following streets:
    Rivendell Road
    Bywater Way
    Dunedain Street
    Wolverton Lane
    Lorien Place
    Silverlode Court
    and…
    wait for it…
    Wesley Road

If you like gaming, try COTI:
    http://www.contact-conference.com/
This year the COTI Director will be Larry Niven. Great, inexpensive, small fun conference in Sunnyvale (AKA Silicon Valley.) (Rick Sternbach is one of the founders.)
COTI is a hoot and an intellectual challenge to boot.

Also of note if you use Google maps to zoom out a bit, you’ll see that Picard Lane is off of 5th street. The NCC1701-D is the fifth ship to be designated Enterprise after the formation of the United Federation of Planets, and the first appearance was in the pilot episode: Encounter at Farpoint.
