The Wil Wheaton Project

In a few hours, I’ll begin recording the first episode of The Wil Wheaton Project. We’ve been working on it for a very long time, and it is a surreal feeling to know that in about 30 hours, my stupid face is going to be a moderately big deal for twenty-one and a half minutes on a major cable network.

I have the same feeling I have before I publish a book, or after I wrap a TV show: I’ve done the best I can to make something I’m proud of, that I think other people will like, but it’s pretty much out of my hands the second we push the beautiful, shiny button … the jolly, candy-like button. Like everything I do as an artist, the best I can hope for is that I don’t get hit by lightning on my way out of the studio. Oh, and that the stuff I think is entertaining and informative lands on the audience the same way.

I know a lot of you reading this don’t subscribe to cable or satellite, and as far as I know, it will be online at Syfy.com and probably Hulu and Hulu+, but I’m not sure how soon after it airs. I also think it’s available as a subscription in iTunes. I know that, because of a number of factors that are completely out of my control, it’s only available in the United States. Totally unrelated to that, I wonder if any of you non-American viewers have ever heard of VPN services like unblock-us.

So I really want everyone in the world to see my show, because I’m super proud of it and I think a lot of you will enjoy it. If you have to use some possibly questionable means to see it, I’m not going to try to stop you. BUT — if you can watch it in some way that the network can score (on broadcast or via one of the legally-supported websites), please do that, because the more people who watch it in a way the network can count, the more likely it is they will order a full season of the show.

This is a big day for me. Thank you to everyone who has helped make it possible.

If I watch it more than once, will the network know that as well?

My schedule for tomorrow is to buy Skin Game, read it while getting my car fixed, then come home and watch Wil Wheaton Project. All in all, seems like it’ll be a good day.

coolness. Just added your show to the series manager on my DVR, but it can’t tell the difference between ‘first-run’ and repeats yet. So I added all of them. Break a leg!

Best wishes for your show. My whole family enjoys Table Top, and we decide what to buy based on what we saw on the show. My kids sometimes defend their game moves by starting a sentence with, “Well, Will Wheaton says . . . . “

As a UK fan, I will find some way to watch it, be it astral projection, VPN, or some other means. Looking forward to it, and hopefully getting some laughs, chuckles, guffaws, titters or sniggers out of the experience!

Will definitely find a way to watch from El Salvador, Central America.

Best of luck in your new endeavour. I was hoping Space channel in Canada would carry it, but so far no luck.

It was a wishlist search on my DVR before it was available. Then I had a season pass. I also added a reminder to make sure it was there.

One question: I’m working my way through Song of Ice and Fire (around middle of Clash of Kings now) and heard mention about GoT. Any risk of spoilers?

    1. Wil says:
      27 May, 2014 at 1:02 pm

Yes. Because we have to be relevant to what’s happening on TV this week, there will almost always be some kind of spoilers. In fact, there’s a *huge* GoT spoiler in the fourth act of tonight’s show, during “Shoutouts”, but the rest of the show leading up to it is spoiler-free.

Won’t be home when it airs but have the DVR set to record the entire series.

I have this booked on my calendar so I don’t miss it!

One thing though… when you say “my stupid face” it makes me a wee bit sad. I think you are so talented and fabulous and I wish you saw it the way I do. I understand depression/anxiety…. they lie.

You are a beautiful person and a damn smart one. Not stupid at all.

  22. karohemd says:

Wow, that’s a quick turnaround! Good luck and all that. I’ll be watching via nefarious means (I’m in the UK) but sincerely hope SyFy UK will be picking it up. They showed BSG only a day later in the US and if they do the same with WWP, it will still remain topical.

  23. Holly Pilcher Birge says:
    26 May, 2014 at 2:38 pm

I will be watching from the web via VPN from Canada! If you are in Canada or the UK, I highly recommend TunnelBear as a reliable VPN service.

  24. Hallie says:
    26 May, 2014 at 2:59 pm

Good luck Wil. I know it will be great. Because I am outside the US I will be watching via “other means” but I will be watching.

  26. Stefano says:

Wil, first of all: good luck! it will be a great show, I am sure of that.
I know it’s out of your control, but it really sucks that to watch your show from abroad we have to bend the rules.
Anyway: congratulations! you deserve the success you have.
    hugs. Stefano.

      28 May, 2014 at 9:25 am

Just curious, can you still buy new blank tapes for a VCR? I just got my VCR out of storage and the old blank tapes have been reused so often they will are probably ready to disintegrate.

Have my TV set to autotune so that I’m a legitimate, watches-commercials-during-airtime viewer AND am DVRing the series, too. Can’t wait to see the show! Hope you get good ratings and reviews, and more than that, I hope you continue to enjoy the experience and feel proud of what you’re creating!
