50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

Okay so the whole point of this Daily December thing is to just put something new here every day, and not worry about exactly what it is. We’re four — five? Wait. Did I miss a day?

Okay, I just checked and I didn’t miss a day. That’s weird. Time is a flat circle, man, I read about it in The Bearenstein Bears And The King In Yellow.

Anyway, this is a good exercise for me. Just post a thing that I care about, or think is cool for some reason, and don’t worry too much about it being something deep and whatever.

So.

I don’t remember why I started doing “Goodnight, nerds” on Twitter, with a picture from Frinkiac, but now it’s a silly thing I look forward to every night before bed. I actually say to Anne, “I have to go tell the nerds goodnight” before I get into bed.

I usually hit the random button until I come across something from the first eight seasons or so. Occasionally something from the recent seasons shows up that’s really funny on its own, and I’ll grab it just in case, but I like to focus on the classics.

You know, for something dumb that I do to amuse myself, a put a lot of thought into it — well, more thought than you’d expect, I guess.

I don’t watch The Simpsons every week like I used to. We’ve both changed since the 90s, and I think it’s okay to move on and do other things. Shows like Bob’s Burgers and Bojack Horseman are more my speed these days.

I’m performing an audiobook all day today, so I have to get going, but I’m putting this here so I won’t forget: Bojack Horseman is a thing I want to write about in a little more depth when I have some time.

The 404 page at The Outline is pretty great.

Funny. I’ve actually started looking forward to seeing what you’ll post from the Simpsons each night too. It’s fun to see a scene that I remember. It usually makes me start quoting bits and pieces of that episode or others. I don’t think I’ve watched an episode of the Simpsons in years, but I used to watch it religiously. “The Computer Wore Menace Shoes” is an old favorite and still one of the stranger things the show ever did…well…along with Homer’s insanity pepper hallucination with a Johnny Cash voiced spirit animal…

Huh – I had not heard of The Outline. Thanks (I think) for the offhand reference – sucked away a half hour of my workday exploring. Cool stuff! https://theoutline.com/

Your King in Yellow reference reminded me of something I’d like to share: About 2 weeks ago I was playing Elder Sign with some friends (which I bought because of Table Top…thank you for that). Anyway, the first game went pretty easy. We completed rooms, got signs, and won pretty easily. Elder god didn’t even get a token on his doom track, and we only missed doing one room on the first try.

So we played again. While setting up, one of the players opted to say a certain name three times.

…and holy crap, did that next game go badly. Rooms rarely were completed on the first try, dice getting locked all over the place. We ended up having to fight the Elder God for that game. We won, but the last Mythos effect caused the offending name player to be devoured.

Between the Elder Sign episode of TT, and my own experience… definitely don’t say that name.

My husband and I are the only ones of our friends who watch Bojack Horseman and it is amazing. I don’t enjoy watching someone slo-mo self-destruct but it is so… honest? unflinching? about who Bojack is and watching him struggle against his own instincts is something I can relate to, I guess. And Todd, sweet summer child that he is. And Diane, and Mr. Peanut Butter, and all the subtle animal kingdom stuff that happens in the background… all that to say, SO GOOD!

A poem by Bennett Cerf, Wil:

Some primal termite knocked on wood
And tasted it and found it good.
So that is why my cousin May
Fell through the parlor floor today.

Ack! Can’t believe I’m the first to note this, but…. it’s the Berenstain Bears, not Berenstein Bears. (Use the google machine thingie to see some interesting articles about people’s memories of “Berenstein” and some interesting, to say the least, theories about why so many people remember it differently.

It sounds strange (but also good?) that I like to look at the comments to your “goodnight nerds” posts. You have some regulars who post, without fail, right after you do. Sometimes, they don’t post right away, and then I worry a little bit about them and hope they’re okay.

I, like so many other nerds, also say good night back atcha, so thank you for that.

I spent all day with my hubby at his First Ever Disney experience yesterday (21 attractions in 14 hours and 32k steps at the “Land”), so I’m completely exhausted today. Still, I wish I were performing an audiobook instead of catching up on internets!

    Have fun making reading! 🙂

Apparently you and I are from a group of people originating in a parallel universe, because it’s The Bearenstein Bears for me too and not Bearenstain (“ain” vs. “ein”):

I’d like to say thank you for the “goodnight, nerds” posts because in addition to the fun, old Simpsons references, it helps me go to bed at a better time. I didn’t do a full reboot like you, but I have been trying to work on some sleep issues. A big problem there is detaching from the Internet at night. I’m one hour ahead of you, so my nightly goal is to be off of Twitter before your “goodnight” post. It’s a small thing, but it’s been working recently. So thank you for that.

Huh… The Outline. Never heard of it. Cool site.

I liked this story about 40 satellites snapping pictures of the whole earth at 10:30am every day and selling the images to marketers & etc. https://theoutline.com/post/131/on-camera-forever

Hmmm. 10:30 isn’t too early. I can be up by 10:30am.

I can hear the analysts now: “Hey Lennie, check this out – is this a statue? Every morning at 10:30am – same guy – same blue bathrobe – same tan slippers – standing there with the same white mug of coffee in his left hand, extending the same bird right at our camera with his right hand… and he’s there rain or shine or snow or hail. But what’s really spooky is that if you zoom in really close, you can see that the amount of coffee in the mug varies from day to day… I don’t know what to make of it”

    🙂

    Oh, and… “Goodnight, Gracie.”

This is a really great bilingual 404 page. 出了問題 (traditional characters) literally means “went to a problem.” Kind of cool! @susan_echlin

This is something I need to do as well. I’ve been a blogger for many years, but in the last year or so, I’ve stopped completely. I have no idea why. It may have something to do with the fact that I don’t feel inspired any more. I always want to write the best post. However, like you said, I should just try and write something every day. I know I’ll benefit from just being creative.
