New York Times Number One Best Selling Audiobook Narrator Releases Free Audiobooks During Stay At Home

  • Books
  • Podcast

It occurs to me that, if I were better at marketing myself, I’d be writing and sending out press releases titled, “New York Times Number One Best Selling Audiobook Narrator Releases Free Audiobooks During Stay At Home” because I’m having so much fun reading and recording these things (today, the dogs really joined in), and I want them to find as wide an audience as possible. I don’t know anyone else in my line of work who is doing this sort of thing, and I think that it’s kind of a cool thing to do. I suppose I should have a conversation with my team.

Today’s story is from 1956, and it feels like one of those 90s anthology shows, like Outer Limits or Perversions of Science. It’s a whole lot of fun.

If I may: are you listening to these things? I’m unclear on the size and enthusiasm of the audience, and I’m curious.

Sigh. I used to listen to audiobooks during my work commute. I will try listening during runs and bike rides now that my Aeropex bone-conduction headset has arrived.

It is WAY too hazardous to listen with ear buds or headset while running, biking or driving on or near roads or other traffic or pedestrians.

My brain isn’t patient enough to listen right now but I have your SoundCloud site bookmarked on my ‘check out daily’ bookmark list. And the moment the brain settles down, I’m going to happily listen my way through the list. Thank you for doing these!

I’m part of your blogosphere that went silent when other forms of online interaction gained traction. Still here, still reading EVERY blog entry, and I’ve been listening to and enjoying the crap out of your free story narrations. I love your style, love the stories you’re picking, love that they are short enough for me to sandwich in between other things (essential worker reporting for duty). You’re right, I don’t know of anyone else who is doing this, and it’s great. The authorial equivalent of live online concerts that so many artists are doing these days, but for word nerds (guilty). So yes, love them, love you, keep on keeping on, good sir.

    Disclaimer: This is off topic.

Message: I just started re-watching STTNG and it is just so great and you created such a wonderful character who was super meaningful to me back when we were both that age. So thanks for sharing your WC character with me and with us all, and thanks for being here now being YOU and sharing so much continued beauty and talent in the world.

I know there are lots of things that are true about all the times over the years, and so many of our memories are as painful as they are important and even infused with goodness at the same time. It can all be very confusing inside a soul. But I can say that your creativity inspired me then and your current creativity inspires me now, and I just felt like telling you that.

    Thanks for being you.

I always look forward to hearing from the three of you! I love your readings, Wil, and Shamus and Marlowe make it special with their comments. 😉 You are doing sooo much to help us during these difficult days. I love that you are reading cold. I love the little Oops! 🙂 Take care, dear Wil, and may you and yours weather through the bad times!

Chris Cuomo on CNN is doing a nightly mention of “Ameri-cans” who are doing unique things to help others through the quarantine. You might reach out to him and let him know what you’re doing. You really are doing something special here Wil and your empathy for those around you is really shining through. Anyway, that’s my two cents.

I have listened to one and plan to listen to more. It would be helpful when you mention a new one in your blog post if you would say how long it is so we can easily plan when is a good time to listen to it. (Loooongtime reader, VERY rare commenter)

Speaking of “New York Times Number One Best Selling Audiobook Narrator”: I just started listening to your narration of The Last Emperox and I’m in love, both with the book and with your narration. Thanks to you I listened to all Scalzi books, because you’re doing such an ecellent job at it!

They’re all getting bookmarked and I look forward to downloading and listening. I check my RSS feeds first thing in the morning on my phone, and am not then in a position to queue them in in a tab on my computer. I wish they were in the RFB podcast feed so they’d land automatically! 🙂

These have been great Wil, thanks. I hope everyone is enjoying them as much as you or I am. I do have a very selfish request though. So you think you could do a simple childrens book? If love to share your voice and passion with my kids.

Definitely listening, but I’ve got to finish that other book you narrated that came out this week first.

    Thanks for doing this, Wil.

Once we’re all out of this mess, I’d love to see you and Anne on Star Trek Cruise V. 😊

Of course I’m listening Mr W, although as I’ve discovered during the lockdown my aging grey matter can’t cope with painting toy soldiers and actually listening, so I’m squeezing the listens in once my eyes go wibbly after a few hours of staring at wee space mens (also concluded I need way stronger specs)

I listen when there is a ‘listen in browser’ option. I tried to use Soundcloud and couldn’t make it work on my phone, so have not yet heard the Cory Doctorow story. (and today) All the others I have liked a great deal, and have thought you’re doing a great job.

Hi Wil, I am listening and enjoying – thank you for doing this! I recently added John Scalzi’s Interdepency trilogy to my Audible simply because I liked Fuzzy Nation so much. Keep up the good work!

this is the first one i’ve listened to so far, and i very much enjoyed it! the interludes with the dogs just make it seem so friendly and casual, like friends hanging out and reading to each other. precious moments — hope for many more! 🙂

I’m listening! As I can. Alas, Zoom has contributed to the pace of life picking up again along with the demands on my time. But your stories are a joy.

  40. Emo says:

I’d love to listen, but the episodes are not appearing in the regular RSS feed that I can find in my podcast app. If Sound Cloud is the only way to listen, that would appear to leave me out.

I don’t want to dictate how you do your thing, but I am disappointed that I can’t listen.

  41. Dorianne Wendy Marsh says:
    16 April, 2020 at 9:33 am

Holy shit that was good at the end. I was a little annoyed with the panicky protagonist at first.

I think your dogs may be reacting to the tension in your voice when things get exciting – which means you’re doing it right. I don’t really mind when you stop to calm them, it’s part of the real feel. Leaving that in makes it feel like we’re actually in your living room. 🙂

Hell yeah, we’re listening! From reading your blog for a long-ish time, I wondered what your reading style would be like; for some reason, I couldn’t imagine you reading. Then I listened. And you read GREAT! Really, I like it. Now, with the weird stuff going on, it is especially wonderful. I’m already staying at home – retired – and more introverted every day. But you offering your work for free just is amazing. And make no mistake: your appearance on Ready Room made me happier than I could have imagined. And to think that a month or two ago, I only listened to Levar Burton or Neil Gaiman!!!
    You rock dude!!!

  44. Steve says:

Yes! I am listening. I’m fitting these in between podcast episodes to shake things up a little bit during the day. I’m not a huge audiobook listener but short stories kind of fill the craving for reading-without-reading and make for interesting walks with my dog.

Yes, I’ve been listening! Love your narration, you voices and how smooth you are when you narrate. Don’t mind the dogs at all – they are just being dogs. Thank you for doing this for us – it really does help.
