I helped make a thing that’s funny

Newcastle teamed up with Caledonian Brewery in Scotland to make a Scotch Ale, and they hired me to tell you about it. We made a pair of really funny videos together, and this is one of them. I’m super proud of this, because I helped write it, and got to improvise a lot of the silly bits. I hope you enjoy it.

What’s that? You want to see the other one? The one that features my long lost twin, Bil Wheaton? Okay, I’ve got you covered.

Hahah great adverts. I know you enjoy Guinness– you might want to consider visiting the Guinness brewery in Dublin. It’s such an excellent exhibit– and you get to pour yourself all the Guinness you want!

This was truly a funny “advertisement.”

Wil! You are driving me to drink

Just don’t do it the other way round

Maybe because you shouldn’t drink and drive.

These are DEFINITELY a thing that is funny. It’s cool if I leave work in the middle of the day to go find beer now, right?
    I <3 Bil Wheaton.

First big laugh I’ve had in a while. Thanks, Wil!

LOL Ahh, that’s freaking hilarious! I LOVE it. Great writing and great spot Wil. Makes me wanna try this stuff and I’m not a beer drinker. 😉 Rock on Dude.

I so wanted Bil to pop Wil in the head at least once. Very well done on both sir, very well indeed.

These are funny even to people who are not crazy about beer!

That was very funny. I’m laughing out loud. But not the LOL that is like 99.5% fake. Real laughing. Real loud.

Was that really a bar you were in or was it a blue screen bar (that would be a pretty good name for a bar in LA, I think. Blue Screen Bar! Or a band. Anyway, enough parenthesizing.)

Also, did they use a blue screen to transport you to stock brewery footage or did they have your chair and table on a little dolly and move you around on set? Or maybe the set could move? Maybe that was all the construction noise!

In any event, well done. Even if you were upstaged a bit by the captions. And the beer.

Oh Wil, you’ve done it again! Great spot. I bet you’re a “fun” drunk…

As a Geordie girl, I find it hilarious that Newcastle Brown Ale is so popular around the world. At home we say it’s made of Tyne water. However the brand is now infinitely cooler through it’s association with you. As we would say in Newcastle, you’re a reet canny lad Wil!

That was AWESOME! I guffawed, out loud. People are staring….

  19. David Webb says:

Thanks for a much needed laugh. I’ll definitely be trying the Scotch Ale, one of my favorite styles. In fact, I have a kick ass home brew recipe for one that is aging on oak right now.

  20. neuro says:
    13 November, 2014 at 5:19 pm

“Scotch ale”? Ew. Better to call it by it’s shilling rating (I guess it’s probably a 60/- or a 70/-), which would be more in line with it’s Scottish heritage.

    Also, Wil, it’s “Edin-bur-uh”, not “Edin-bo-ro”.

Oh and kids, Newcastle Brown Ale is brewed by Heineken in Yorkshire. It’s about as Geordie as I am, and I’m not from Newcastle. It would be like if Pabst was brewed outside of Milwaukee. What’s that? Now it is? Oh. So you know.

  21. Wil says:
    13 November, 2014 at 5:35 pm

Better to call it by it’s shilling rating

It falls into an area between a 90 shilling and a wee heavy.

    Also, Wil, it’s “Edin-bur-uh”, not “Edin-bo-ro”.

I know. We made a creative decision to pronounce it the way we did, because this is for a mostly American audience, and that’s the way we say it here in America.

    1. neuro says:
      14 November, 2014 at 4:01 am

Wil, does this mean if we in the UK decide LA should be pronounced Las Angh-els, we can do that? 🙂

      1. Wil says:
        14 November, 2014 at 9:44 am

        Absolutely.

Wonderful commercials. Only thing missing was your kilt! I really was expecting it.

    1. Laura says:
      13 November, 2014 at 6:15 pm

Way to lay on the kilt trip, man! 😀

My favorite bit, though, was Bil Wheaton cooing over the boom mic at the end, though. Now if only it had chittered like a tribble…

  23. Alan Oursland says:
    13 November, 2014 at 6:53 pm

Your brother is kind of a dick in that commercial, Bil.

(I’m assuming you’ll pass this on to Bil, Wil. K Thnx By)

I’m bugging my local beer store tomorrow about this brew. (Is it out yet? I guess I’ll find out.) I love scotch ales. Also, I think you have good taste in beer. I

Ha! That was really funny! It had just the right amount of skeletor reading angry tweets! ..you know, because it had none.. Get it? I’ll just see myself out…

What do beers other than Scotch Ale and making love in a canoe have in common?… They’re both fucking close to water. (credit Eric Idle)

  27. Spudnuts says:
    13 November, 2014 at 9:41 pm

Bil was getting tuckered out from holding that swiffer.

  28. Gary watson says:

Very funny, but I was surprised that Bil did not try to get a better looking beard

Have a great time in Auld Reekie and enjoy a pint of Deuchars IPA, it’s the best…

  30. mrben says:

As an English resident in Scotland (Glasgow rather than Edinburgh), I loved the adverts, although “scotch ale” is all wrong: it should be “Scottish Ale”. But I’m guessing they knew that. I wonder if they’ll actually try and sell it here….

    1. neuro says:
      14 November, 2014 at 4:00 am

mrben, Scotch Ale is actually A Thing, but usually in export markets; we just call it 80/-, 70/-, etc.

  31. ala005 says:
    14 November, 2014 at 10:15 am

Not only did I like the commercial – I really want to try the beer! Sounds like the perfect blend. IPA is a bit too hoppy for my liking.

  32. Struan Judd says:

Is it just me or is Will channeling James Spader during large segments of the ad. (P.S. Awesome)

  33. thebloggess says:
    14 November, 2014 at 11:24 am

Love. Although I read the second advert as “twining” and was a bit let down at the lack of twine.

  34. Elizabeth says:

Love both of them! Very funny!

  35. Joel says:

Hey Wil, outta the blue I know, but if you’re headin’ tae Embra and are at a loose end of an evening, feel free to join us at the Edinburgh Games Hub for an evening of cardboard intrigue.

It also just happens to be just round the corner from the Hanging Bat, one of Scotland’s most exciting small brewpubs…
