Tabletop’s RPG Show

  • Tabletop

This is one of those “write it now so I can refer to it later” posts, because this is a FAQ.

A Redditor asked:

Still excited about the RPG show, any idea when we’ll be hearing any news on that front?

I responded:

We’re in preproduction right now. I’ve designed the fundamental pillars of the world, met with some writers and game designers to get the ball rolling on the actual world building and campaign writing, and I’ve written an outline for the campaign itself.

We have a schedule on the board, but it’s likely to change, and we have to go over our final budget on Monday to determine how many episodes we can afford to produce. Once all that stuff is locked down, and we’re confident that things won’t change, we’ll make some announcements, but I can’t tell you when that it, because I don’t know.

I am so incredibly excited about this show, and I love the world we’ve created for it. The system we’re playing is really great, and I hope we’ll be able to share some of the details with the world sooner than later.

For now, here’s a shot from our editing screening yesterday:

Can’t wait for this! I’ve been learning to be a GM, which is intimidating to me as a woman and a newer RPG gamer, so this is going to be really awesome!

Being a GM can be super fun with the right group, and I’m sure watching Wil GM will be super helpful! Good luck!

I started off as a DM for D&D as my intro to RPGs (All the way back in 1981!). It can be just as much fun as being a player. Just remember that you’re job is not to help the players, or to kill the players, it’s to help everyone have fun, including you. Be silly, be serious, be scary, be whatever suits your fancy. The world if wide open for you.

I’ll offer up two pieces of advice:

1.Remember Rule Zero. If a rule gets in the way of fun, throw the rule away. Just make sure everyone knows the rule has been thrown away and agrees.

Be prepared to improvise!!!!! The players will throw you a curveball. Prepare an encounter or two ahead of time in case they wander too far away from your prepared area.Have a few simple stock NPCs to use if they suddenly decide to make a friend.

Welcome to RPG-ing. Welcome to being a GM. Have fun making the players think.

What does being a woman have to do with it?

i think the defensive way your response scans actually answers that question for everybody else.

As a female DM, it makes no difference to me, but I DM weekly Encounters at our local games store that are open to the public and to about one new guy in 10 it will make all the difference in the world. I’ve had 3 different guys since I’ve started refuse to play or ask to change tables when they’ve found out I’m DMing, before any of us have even rolled a dice. Luckily the other players make up for it.

Focus on having fun you shouldn’t need to worry. Though anything new can be intimidating. Have fun! And get in the games.

No, this is its own thing.

I miss Aeofel, although I have to give Patrick Rothfuss his dues -laughs-

Are you GMing this game or will it be another?

Really, really looking forward to this. My Friends and I are playing through Rise of the Runelords and my RPG world is just erupting with amazement and ideas and fun. The best part is you never know what exactly will happen.

The board before you looks A LOT like the Concept boardgame, and not some RPG stuff. 😀

Nice. I’ve been listening to this podcast called “These Warriors are Terrible”, which basically consists of a bunch of beautiful idiots getting together for short 4-hour sessions of various RPGs. It is… highly entertaining. So I guess what I’m saying is, I really think this is gonna be a lot of fun. 😀

Will you be discussing world building during the show? It would be interesting to hear your logic behind the setting.

    1. Wil Wheaton says:
      23 November, 2014 at 11:07 am

Not in the show itself, but almost certainly in some not the flogs, or some other additional videos.

      1. krellumdead says:

That will be great too! I love hearing how others design games.

I think an AMA where we can ask you questions about your design choices would be awesome. As I work on designing the next game in the connected series with Weather Zen (http://goo.gl/2bUZBF) it would great discussing design choices.

I’m happy that the show is happening and looking forward to it! Brings back memories of GMing in my teenage days… we mainly played GURPS, which was great fun because of the character disadvantages and quirks.

The best GM I ever played with had one rule he adhered to religiously: “Keep the players poor”.

  14. Juliana says:

Since your Gencon panel where you delved into this concept, I have been waiting for news of the show’s development. I think this is an amazing idea with great potential to get people like me back into RPGs. As of now my husband, 6 yr old, and I play games like Munchkins, Carcassonne, and Catan. I think we are ready for more. Do you realize, Wil, how you bring so many friends and family together? And we all appreciate your efforts. Cheers!

I’m actually really excited about the RPG episode(s). I have played an RPG exactly once and it was a blast. I remember wanting to play in junior high (in the 80s). There was a club that met after school, but it was all boys and I was too intimidated to join. I later had a chance to play when i was 22 and have never forgotten it. Hoping to get my 7 year old son interested – he has loved many of the games that tabletop has introduced to us!

Hi all! Super-pumped for the RPG show!

My copy of Tokaido came in yesterday, so much fun I even ordered the expansion, which looks totally awesome!

I was wondering, since there will be 40 weeks of airing Gag Reels and episodes, that on those off-weeks, if the crew at Geek and Sundry had ever thought about releasing the extended cuts or additional interviews (like last season) on those off weeks.

    Just a thought!

I’m really REALLY excited to see the new RPG show!

It’s so hard to find sessions that are well done so the Dragonage RPG last season and the Aquisition Inc. Podcasts and PAX sessions were great with a nice mix of serious plot and gameplay and lots of funny moments. But after seeing and hearing them a bunch of times I’m hungry for something new.

Also I’m really interessted in the new system you are using. I’ve already created 2 RPG systems myself and new mechanics and ways of improvising are always nice tools for GMing.

Thank you for everything you’ve done so far.
Now it’s time for me to go back to my Wil Wheaton shrine and read that 489 pages of Shadowrun 5 “Grundregelwerk”
