More Thoughts From The Wife

  • blog

Hey! Check it out! The wife is actually using the computer! I’m pretty proud of myself. I even did a little on-line Christmas shopping. Guess who has on her big girl pants now!
I wanted to say a little something regarding our shitty (can I say that on here?) New Year’s Eve. See, I hadn’t heard any horror stories about the dog. Just that he was nervous around people. And that the dog didn’t like Darin (which is so odd, since Darin is the nicest, most non-threatening guy I know). Me being the animal lover, I just didn’t see that this dog was vicious. Just scared. I took my time hanging around the dog, and he eventually was rolling and rubbing his face on me. He seemed very happy. All the commotion in the house just scared him and I was the first thing he saw.
The first two days, I felt a little nervous when Ferris would lay on her back and roll over toward me, showing her big happy face and a mouth full of teeth. But this doesn’t change how I feel about animals. I even took my son to a shelter on Saturday and we hung out with the pooches. Stitches and all. And yes, all my other stitches (50 total in the face now….8 from jumping off my brother’s bed and hitting the mattress frame between my eyebrows) were from the dog we had when I was little. So the scared feeling I had when I was a kid definitely came back. I can’t imagine how Wil must have felt when I looked over at him with a mouthful of blood. He kept himself together though.
After my swelling went down a bit (I must say, I was kind of enjoying my Kim Basinger-like full pouting lips) I read the comments that were posted after Wil wrote about this. I am so touched by all of the ‘mojo’ and kind words everyone has sent. I was amazed to read all of the stories of dog bite incidences, as well as several stories of shitty (did we find out if I can say that yet?) New Year’s had by others. At least it was the end of a year, so we can all have a fresh new start!
The bite was a nice straight slice so I think it will heal fine with little scarring. My stitches are a lovely shade of blue which I’ve kind of gotten used to now. I won’t miss them when they’re gone though. And hopefully this will be the last time a dog uses my face for a chomping pad.Wil was right, it could have been so much worse.
Thank you so much for your concern. You are all awesome! No wonder Wil likes doing this website.
Take care and have a healthy, happy, injury-free year!
Anne (the wife)

see I knew you’d have some fun with the collagen implant looking lips. It sounds like you haven’t had much pain – that’s good to hear.

Glad to hear all is well with the lip!
When I meet a new dog I go by what the dog is telling me, I don’t know what it is, telepaty, slight body language, but I seem to be able to tell, most of the time, when a dog is aproachable or not. If it’s not I just wave and say hi before moving on. Just like some people, some dogs are just jerks and can’t be reasoned with. (I’m sure this dog isn’t one of those however).
Just like to say that you are both so lucky to have each other, I only hope I can have something like that. 🙂

    Anne? Really?
Very Cool. Or is that Hella Cool? Much Cool? Way Cool? What phrase does one use in California?
Hope the stitches don’t itch too much. That whole episode reminded me of pre-Christmas at our house. My wife and 3 year old were fooling around and the I hear a meaty thump. Next thing I know my 3 year old daughter is screaming. (after the few seconds of startled-gasping-gulping-air-I-am-next-to-death preamble)I run to find her (my 3 year old daughter to clarify) gushing blood from her mouth. Scared the living shit (shit is okay around here) out of me. Once I calmned down I found out it was only a small cut on the inside of her mouth which required no stitches. So I can relate to Wil on that panic concern thing. Heart rate and blood pressure sore when you see a loved one sprewing blood.
I am glad you are so devoted to animals and their wellbeing. So keep a stiff upper lip (probably not to hard to do right now) and keep good care of your number one animal – Wil.

Anne, it’s really cool to hear from you for once. We hear ABOUT you all the time but never anything from the horses mouth herself (dont take that the wrong way)hehe. It sounds like you and Wil are as in love with eachother as my husband and myself and it is the most wonderful feeling. Good healing mojo from one more monkey anne!! Brook

Anne – Glad to hear that you’re doing better.
I think everyone has a story like that, with an animal attack. I had something similar happen with my cat when I first got it – i was 6 and hugged it. I had a few ‘nice’ little cuts down from my right forehead to the left part of my jaw (thankfully it didn’t get the eye). Needless to say I didn’t wanna be around the cat for a day or two and the cat was happy to oblige ;). I got over it and we kept the cat for the remaining 14 years of its life.

Heya, Anne! So good to see you wresting control of the keyboard from the resident geekboy — whom, as you know, we all love to death. ^___^
I freaked when I read Wil’s post about how you spent the New Year’s Eve. As many have said, that was totally sucky. But it’s good to know that you’re all right, recovering nicely, and with your love of animals still intact.
Do take care, and give the family an extra-large huggle from all of us. And post when you have the time — it’s always a pleasure to hear from you!

    Hi Anne,
I’m glad to read you’re doing OK. I hope Wil will too – it’s terrible that you can’t protect loved ones from accidents after they’ve happened.
Except when you’re Superman and you can travel back in time.

Hey Anne! Glad to hear you’re doing ok and that you’re taking things in stride.
I had a cat that was as crazy as that dog that bit you (I loved Tash, but she was definitely crazy). From my experience with Tash, I’d say the dog is capable of doing this again, so please be careful when you’re around it.

    Yay Anne!
Did you tiptoe down to the kitchen after Wil dozed off reading Watchmen, have some cookies and milk, and think “gee I bet it’s not so hard as Wil tells me it is to make a blog entry?”
Somehow I just think this is a little surreptitious.
Glad your lip does feel better.
    Drake.

O.K., I’ve to share my dog bite story since everyone who hears it gets a good chuckle at my expense.
I was 8 or 9 & a nieghbor was watching a friends cocker spaniel. For some reason they kept it at the playhouse. A group of us girls played at the playhouse & wanted to leave. The dog was running & jumping all over & we couldn’t get out. We did get out one by one, each taking a turn distracting the dog & one would run for it. I was the last one to go & no one distracted the dog so it chased after me & bit me on the butt!!! I kid you not, my right cheek !!
I ran home (2 houses away) screaming that I’ve rabies!!!! My mom took me to the E.R. & there I got 10 stitches.
To this day I don’t care for those dogs & I still carry scars from the bite. Better yet, 2 weeks later my twin brother was bit by a Dalmation on his butt too (the left cheek). Strange thing is he doesn’t have a scar.
So there’s my story & that’s the truth!!!!
    Have a good one!

    YAY!
    It’s an ANNE POST!!
I’m glad you are healing well and didn’t get too spooked by getting bit.
I have been bitten by rats, cats, snakes, horses, lizards, and birds, but no dogs…well, not like they actually meant it.
Chinese New Year is coming up, so you STILL have a shot at having a happy new year.
Oh…and also being a critter lover (obviously) I saved a dog on Sunday…about seven hours before the Santa Ana winds threw the roof of my apartment building all over the block.
    (Thankfully, no one was hurt.)
I hope you have a speedy recovery and post more often.

Dear Anne (aka “The Wife” – sounds like a horror flick!)
With such a remarkable attitude and sense of forgiveness toward the poor frightened pooch, I’m certain you’ll heal up just fine!
All that compassionate mojo you’re expressing has to do some good!
It’s wonderful to hear you’re doing well.
And, if there is a scar… well, always remember – they’re very sexy!

    Greetings from Louisiana’s cajun country!
Hi, Wil’s wife! Glad to see you and glad you are doing better. As someone who has been around dogs and had dogs all my life, I’m more convinced that they are just people with really pretty coats. Just like people you’ve known for years can snap for no reason, so can dogs. BTW, our latest rescue was a big (around 100 lbs) white german shepherd/lab mix that was wandering right by the freeway. He’s as sweet and friendly as can be. Why somebody would dump him is beyond me.
Take care, and hope to see you soon. Oh, hi, Wil!

  30. Holly says:

    Hi Anne
I know all to well the canine behavior you described. It’s very common with abuse rescues — sweet dog, but it’s reaction to being startled or frightened is to bite. My greyhound and I were playing at an off-leash park here in Seattle last summer. She ran a little too close to a Border Collie, and the Border Collie bit her. My dog had to have surgery and looked like hell for a couple of weeks. The owners couldn’t believe their dog had done this, but then it came out that this dog was an abuse rescue.
I have great admiration that you have not let this incident dampen your love of animals. It’s obvious that this isn’t a malicious dog. And maybe Darin just reminds the dog in some way of someone in his past that abused him.
I hope the healing continues for you, both physically and emotionally.

Hey Shemp – I’m thinking the rabbinical equivalent of that would be, “Da goil’s got khutzpa!”
Anne, I was going to say something along the lines of using George Carlin’s 7 forbidden words as a guideline of what you should or should not say or type on a public medium, but never you mind – “shit” is one of the forbidden words. If you break one rule, why not break them all? I guess when in doubt, just ask Drew Curtis.
    FARK EWE! (oh gross…)

    Wil and Anne
I am so glad to hear that your accidents have not scared you away from the animals. I am a huge animal lover and grew up with my mom bringing home just about every stray animal she could find. I hope the new year is a happy one for you guys and all the other WWDN fanatics.

Anne! How cool that you posted! And you are obviously a skilled writer, like your hubby. So glad to hear you’re feeling better! I love animals as much as you do, especially dogs, and I could totally relate to your emotional shock after the bite. But, we both know animals are not evil and the dog will probably become a good companion animal over time.
And to Blech, I hope no one EVER allows you to own an animal.

  38. Amit C. says:

    While we’re talking about scars…
One on my upper lip from tripping over my own feet and splitting said lip on the edge of a large wooden box when I was in kindergarten.
One in the center of my forhead about an inch above the eyebrows (Where I’ve imagined Harry Potter’s scar to be located) in the shape of a fingernail (suspicious…) though I think I got it in the same way as the previous scar, by either running into or falling onto something unpleasant.
“Y”-shaped scar at the origin of my life-line on my right hand. Appropriate since my early years were dedicated mostly towards injuring myself.
General scarring on my right knee from when in the first month of 3rd grade I skidded my bike on some gravel at the bottom of the hill and upon falling on to said gravel turned my knee into hamburger. Yummy.
Emotional scarring from years of dating women not nearly as cool as Anne. Wil, you’re one lucky devil.
