Hooray for computer issues. My iBook is acting up, (details, including lots of NSFW language in the audioblog) but I took a chance on making it go this morning . . . so far, so good. I’m using Safari, so I wonder if the problem is with an older version of Firefox, because Thunderbird does the same thing. Maybe something’s corrupt in some library or something.
Well, I’m not going to worry about it right now, because I need to focus on the tournament.
I’m still alive, but barely. Yesterday I played pretty well, other than two huge fucking stupid dipshit rookie idiot mistakes that cost me 30K in chips, tilted me, and took about an hour of play before I recovered, mentally. Details on that stuff will come later on, as I understand some of my possible competition here is reading my blog.
Cool note: Andy Bloch told a writer for Pokerwire yesterday that my blog was really cool, and very well-written. Sweet!
So I was all the way down to about 25K in chips near the end of the day, when I finally got a hand I could play. On the button, or in the cutoff (can’t remember and my notes are messy) UTG raised it to 1800. With the blinds at 300-600, this was a standard steal-raise, but I had decided that this was my Moment iof Truth: I was all-in on this hand no matter what . . . I just wanted to play it right so I could get some action from at least one of the players, probably the raiser, who was this guy Victor (pro player, I forget his last name. Very nice guy, though.) I re-raised to 6000. He thought about it for a long, long time, asked me how many chips I had, all that stuff. Since I had decided I was going to move on this hand no matter what, I wanted a call, so if he was looking for weakness, he wasn’t going to find it. Eventually, he called. The flop was 9-7-x, all different suits. He checked, I moved in immediately.
He thought about it again, and eventually said to one of the other guys, “He hasn’t played a hand in four hours.” I just looked at the flop, and hoped he called. I loved this flop.
“Do you have Kings?” He said.
“It’ll only cost you about 20,000 to find out, Victor,” I said.
“I worked hard for these chips, man,” he said.
“You sure did.”
He tapped his cards, fiddled with his chips, rubbed his eyes beneath his glasses, and folded.
I nodded and raked the pot.
Next hand I got was also a monster. Two playable hands in a row took a little bit of the sting off of the relentless string of K-2o, 5-3o, and J-7o bullshit I’d been looking at all day.
I raised it up to 6000, got one caller. The flop was a Jack and two baby cards. The caller bet half the pot, I moved in, he folded quickly.
I gave about 1800 back in blinds and antes, and ended the day around with 37375 in chips. That puts me around 272 in a field of about 314 or so, and it means that if I don’t double through before the end of the first or second level today, it’s only a matter of time before I’m out.
I talked with Travis from ACME last night, and if I’m still alive in this thing this afternoon, we’re cancelling the Dancing Barefoot performance tonight, and moving it to next week.
I only have to make it to 100th place to get $30,000! That would pay for all my kitties, and the knee surgery Ferris has to have on Monday. (Can I get an “Oy vey,” please?)
Time for breakfast, then a quick shower. I’ve got Darwin with me, so he’s channeling all the Monkey Mojo I can get.

Oh, and it ends at the hands of Annie Duke. If you had to go, at least it was to a real pro! Sounds like a real tough pair of hands.
Well done, Wil!
Annie Duke eliminates Wil Wheaton Ten minutes after being crippled when an opponent hit trip queens against his pocket kings, Wheaton pushed his last 15k in with pocket kings (again!). Duke called with AK and spiked the ace.
🙁 Kel
(News from Poker Wire)
Dammit. It sucks to have pocket kings lose twice so quickly.
When did the money go in against the trip queens?
Nice job Wil, sorry to see that you busted out, losing with KK two hands in a row.
I think it’s fun that Darwin is with you. I enjoy the photos.
Maybe we can have a small section called:
The “Darwin Diaries”
(Observations of Wil from a Simian point of view)
P.S. Enjoy the monkey madness in the games. May you earn tons of bananas!
Ouch. Two hands in a row with pocket kings and you lose both?!? Oh well. I’m sure it was fun while it lasted.
Oh MAN!!! I just read the news. Sorry Wil! Well, I hope you had fun playing! Good Job!
I hope you had fun playing!
Umm, does anyone know if he made it to the 100 players? I don’t really know how poker tournaments work.
Man, that really bites to get out-drawn with pocket kings twice! I’m sorry you didn’t finish higher in the standings, but it looks like you had a good run, and you outlasted quite a few name players. You should be proud of yourself, even through what must be a hefty amount of pain from those beats.
Now we are all waiting for your recount of the experience. Try not to keep us in suspense too long, k?
Oh yeah – how cool that Andy Bloch left a comment! Andy, nice to see you here.
::30 grand mojo, 30 grand mojo!!!::
Looks like we’re going to have to do without our Uncle Willie fix for a bit. Wil
posted to his photo blog with his iBook showing the Mac BSoD.
Cheer up Wil! You now have another chapter for your Poker book!
Ouch on the laptop crashin, whilst on the road. Can’t get to your desktop or other software to help diagnose, fix, restore, install, boot, hammer, sledgehammer, etc.
Hope it’s a relatively easy and benign fix.
Good job in the WPT Championships, Wil! Was hoping that you’d place well enought to cash in the 30 large, and them some… next year!!!
From Cardplayer:
Dwayne Moyers has been playing solid poker, and had fortune smile upon him. With about $120,000 in front of him, Moyers took a stand against Will Wheaton. Moyers raised preflop, and Wheaton re-raised. Moyers decided to move all in and was called instantly by Wheaton. Wheaton had Moyers covered and turned over K-K. Moyers showed A-Q and needed some help headed to the flop. Moyers got more than a little help when the flop came Q-Q-4. Now Wheaton needed help, but help never came. Moyers doubles up to $240,000, and Wheaton is all but crippled with $10,000 left. Wheaton knew he made the right play, but asked for guidance after the hand. “Did I make the right play, David Sklansky?”
A few hands later, Annie Duke ended Wheaton’s day. Wheaton, with K-K again, was all in against Duke’s A-K. Today was just not Wheaton’s day, as an A fell, and he was eliminated.

Wil was doing great before that. He started this hand with 130,000 in chips, with blinds at $800-$1,600 ($200 ante). So losing his stack with cowboys twice in a row really effing blows. If they’d held up against Moyers, Wil would have been in great shape.
Live poker is rigged.
Argh! Argh! ARGH!!! My invocation of Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra went for naught!
When I saw you up in 7th place, I really thought you were going to at least finish in the money, maybe even make the final table. Major, major tough beats on the cowboys. But, as others have said, at least it was a top pro that took you down; hell, I’d be honored to even play a hand against Annie Duke.I’m hoping this won’t be the last we see of you in tournament play though.
Aw man, Wil, that sucks. I hate making the right play and then losing.
I have very few poker stories, but here’s my equivalent:
I’m in a group of co-workers. On one hand I get 6-something-off-suit. (maybe 9; I don’t remember, ). A co-worker, who I like but has been cocky all night, bets, and I call. The flop is KK6. We bet a whole bunch. 4th street is a K. I have a full house, lots more betting. It’s just the two of us now. The river comes–K. He wins it by having a Jack; a higher kicker than my 6 which now does me no good. And on my 31st birthday, too.
Argh!
We will soon return you to your regularly scheduled Wil.
Unfortunately, wil went out somewhere between 222 and 195. Losing with Cowboys twice is awfully hard to do. Especially because it’s not like he played the hands poorly. It’s your job to get your money in the pot with the best hand. He did it twice, and both times he was drawn out on. That’s brutal.
Now that you’ve used up all your bad poker luck, wil… come to Vegas on June 4th and play in the World Poker Blogger Tour Aladdin Casino Classic!!!!! (Remember, I’m gonna keep bugging you!) We’re gonna have a few pros with us… but I promise not to invite Annie since she busted you!
Tough couple of breaks Wil, hope to see more of you in upcoming tournaments.
Great day, Wil, even though you did a nose dive those last couple hands. Shake it off. It was a free shot for one, and two, it was a great chance for WPT to see your chops and know that you can be a deffinate contender, not to mention entertaining on and off TV (the HHG was funny stuff).
Damn Wil, I feel for you. Know this: you played it right. It would’ve been stupid to play it any other way. It’ll make a great addition to your growing list of stories. Look forward to reading this one.
Hi Wil,
Good Luck! Much Monkey Mojo coming your way!! woohoo!!! doing a little happy dance too!
Take care
Hope you’re ok!
Rach
Sorry to hear about the hands Wil. Who would have thought? They were well played, and you’re not a psychic (although I have my doubts about Darwin).
Anyway, you have plenty of other ships in the harbor. I’ll see you next Wednesday!
May Lady Luck be on your side, An Elephant stand on your toes and a Bird Of Paradise fly up your nose! Hugs and Good Luck from Lesley
Ok, after getting into the 60th comment I see you went bust. Sorry, it was fun while it lasted. Good Luck for the future. It’s all a part of learning I guess.
Hugs and have a good one!
Major mojo coming your way Wil – good luck!!
Wil
Congratulations on making good choices and doing your best. You outlasted some big names, and showed that you’re not just a actor with a weblog, you’re a damn fine poker player too. 🙂
Here’s hoisting a pint of the finest to you, with a shot for good measure. Salud!
P.S. Yes, those beats royally reeked – but don’t let them get you down man. Get the cursing and room trashing out of your system, and remember – it’s going to be you doing that to somebody else next time!!
Kiss ass and take names man!!!!!!!!!
Hey Wil… while you’re in Vegas, head over to the Hilton. They have replicated the bridge of the Enterprise! It’s uber cool!!!!11!!
Oh, wait.
Never mind.
Uhhhmm…
*no carrier*
You went out shooting with the cowboys, and there’s nothing you could have done to make them work short of cheating. The world’s best poker players would have done just like you did. I’m sure they’ll ask you back in the future.
You did us all proud!
Wil, My man, telling everyone at my work about your poker turny had everyone throwing monster mojo your way. But dude!!! you did everything right, played it down to the letter in any book. YOU THE MAN>I COULD TYPE IN A KENNY ROGERS TUNE

There are three photos total for Wil on the site Jason links. Go here:
http://www.lasvegasvegas.com/poker/wpt3photogallery.php
Then jump to page 16. Wil is in two photos, and Darwin gets one of his own!
Wil — good job — you outlasted Daniel Negrenau, and Tobey McGuire 😉
Hmmmm… No post yet today. Could that mean iBook problems still, or that you’re so alive you have no time to write. I hope it’s the latter! All the way baby! Kitties need some doctor bills paid for! And Reilly, too!
nice photos JasonR – and folks, check out this picture of the man in action! I think I see the problem though, looks like Darwin was getting tired from channeling all that Mojo. 🙂

I won a teeny bit of money myself yesterday and was (finally) able to order both of your books today. I hope all the good luck I had passes on to you this way.
Wil-
A crushing flop. I feel your pain. You made the right moves and should have placed in the top 50, at least. Next time.
Oy vey!
Have enjoyed reading your blog – so sorry about the kitties.
Lots of mojo coming your way…
Annie Duke, who knocked Wil out of the tournament yesterday, just got knocked out herself. She had pocket Kings (Same hand that Wil has his two hands of death). She managed to trip them up on the flop, but David Williams made a straight to take the pot.
And for those that don’t know. Annie Duke is Howard Lederer’s(sp) sister.
-Jason
Tough breaks, Wil. I know it’s cliche’d to hell, but you can never hear it enough: That’s poker.
Tough break buddy. Up and down. Thick and weigh. So it goes.
Hey Wil,
You got some nice props here. Check it out:

Notebook: Los Angeles
You fought like a champ, Wil. Too bad it didn’t go your way for you.
As for your iBook problems, are you getting the rosetta stone pop up on you (the rosetta stone being when the screen contrast darkens and you get a multi-language message “You need to restart your computer by holding down the power button”)
I’m having that pop up sometimes on my iBook too which is annoying as all hell, but I’m keeping watch of what applications I have running.
I know it’s late in the day (as far as responding to your post about it) but I just wanted to recommend Word Press since you were trying it.
Even I got it working and that’s almost a religious experience.
This comment was posted at 10am, it’s now 6pm, I would guess this means you’ve stayed in all day. Wishing you the best of luck man, I think you’ll do fine! `8r) Can’t wait to see the episode and read the fallout. heh
Dang– that sounds like a load of fun. Great read.
Is that a monkey behind your hand, or are you just happy to be playing poker?(per the CardPlayer photo)
Bummer you didn’t kill, but you know we’re all waiting on tenterhooks for your writeup–even if you don’t win, you’ll get a great story, remember?
It’s not a bad thing to be knocked out by Annie Duke. If memory serves me correct, she also beat out 9 of the top poker players in the world to win $2 million in the WSOP Tournament of Champions, including her own brother. It sucks to get knocked out, but considering who did the knocking out, it’s not too bad.
Besides, didn’t I see in the winnings that you were in the money, for $140,000? For a freeroll, that’s pretty friggin’ good.
Good job Wil.
