poker tournament just for bloggers

  • Games

I don’t have as much time to play poker as I did in days gone by, but I still love a good game of cards, whether I’m sitting at a kitchen table with my friends, a casino with strangers, or at PokerStars.

A few years ago, PokerStars started this freeroll (that’s what you call a tournament where you don’t pay anything to enter, but there’s still a big pile of money to win) for bloggers, called the World Blogger Championship of Online Poker. I played in it when I was on Team PokerStars, and I’m pretty excited to play in it this year as one of the thousands of bloggers hoping to scoop up part of the prize pool.

Anyone with a blog can enter the tournament. All you have to do is sign up and paste some code into your blog that gives the following SEOtastic result:

Texas Holdem Poker

I have registered to play in the PokerStars World Blogger Championship of Online Poker!

This Online Poker Tournament is a No Limit Texas Holdem event exclusive to Bloggers.

Registration code: 5575088

And as long as we’re talking about poker, if I convinced PokerStars to
do a freeroll for people who signed up via my blog, would you all come out
and play in it?

Would try my hardest to be there yeah!

  2. fatsvernon says:

Very cool on the poker front!
Hey, I was going to download the “Just A Geek” audiobook, but ummm…..$35???
Isn’t that just a little steep? I hope your latest submission is a bit more reasonable.

I am terrible at poker, but I would sign up for the fun of it.
Fatsvernon–that audiobook is worth every penny I promise. There is stuff that is in there that is not in the printed version, and to hear the stories told by Wil himself is awesome. Also, considering the length (9-ish hours) it’s about the same as going to 3 movies.

    Poker

I like playing pokertheres a certain mathematical aspect to it that I like. I dont play very often and when I do, its rarely for money, but I found this from Wil Wheaton and decided to sign upits free if you m…

$35 is not steep for a nine hour audiobook, especially one that’s not subsidized by a large publishing corporation.
If you compare the cost of my audiobook to anything else that’s about the same length, you should discover that it’s fairly priced.

  6. Piper says:

Poker sounds like fun, I usually play somewhere else. When would you do it?

  7. Christopher Ambler says:
    3 October, 2007 at 10:27 am

I’ll likely sign up. I used to play a lot at Party, but now that it’s illegal in the US, how do I fund an account?
Seriously, if I’m prepared to break the law and play for real money, can I even do so?!

  8. jason says:
    3 October, 2007 at 10:32 am

    i’d play.
i’d likely lose, but i’d play, and have a great time at it.

  9. kobowfet says:

    Definetely! Sounds like fun!

Wil says: “And as long as we’re talking about poker, if I convinced PokerStars to do a freeroll for people who signed up via my blog, would you all come out and play in it?”
Oh, hell yeah. I got the announcement as a former participant too, but I would rather sign up as a referral from WWdN:IE.
(Ewww … IE. You should change the part after the colon to something that recalls Firefox, not Internet Explorer. Just my $.02/$.04.)

  11. Sweet Monkey Action says:

    Be there in a heartbeat

  12. HockeyPhool says:
    3 October, 2007 at 10:48 am

As a new PokerStars user, I’d love to play in a WWdN:ix freeroll tournament!!!

  13. iamhoff says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:01 am

Would love to play in a reconstituted WWdN invitational. Already signed up for the Blogger Tourney, tho. Hope to see ya there.

  14. vespertina says:

    would definitely come and play!

  15. blackunicorn says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:04 am

In answer to your question: most definitely.
In response to this tourney announcement: I’m playing too! See you there!

  16. Chuck says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:04 am

If you sponsored one, and I had the day off or evening off when it occurred, I’d definitely be there.

  17. Sam McManus says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:08 am

I would love to be there if it happened on a day I could do it.

  18. Ian McKinney says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:11 am

I’m so certain that I would play in your tournament that I’m already signed up. Hell, I’ve got $7,000 in chips by the first break. Watch out, final table.

  19. Chuck says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:14 am

And of course, PokerStars has once again scheduled the blogger tournament on a day when I’m working. Ah well, such is life in the airline industry.

  20. dph134 says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:25 am

    I would definitely play!

  21. speedy marie says:

This is totally off the topic, but I wanted to let you know about it.
The awesome website DonorsChoose.org is having a Blogger’s Challenge this month for bloggers to provoke their readers to raise money for underfunded schools.
    http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/leadershipboard.html
If you aren’t familiar with DonorsChoose, basically it is a site where teachers at low-income schools create grant proposals for specific projects in their classrooms, and then individual donors donate to fund the grants. It’s an amazing site.
With the blog readership here, I imagine you could raise a pretty penny. The current winner is FAR ahead of the pack, having raised close to $45,000 in 3 days!

  22. wolfger says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:27 am

If I can get PokerStars working under Linux (never successful before), I’d love to sign up for the Wil Wheaton Blogger Invitational. 🙂
Oh, and $35 is a *bargain* price for Just a Geek: Teh Audiobook! Nine discs of stuff, including material not in the book. Are you kidding me?

  23. Katrina says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:28 am

    I’d definitely play a wwdn:freeroll.
I played in and enjoyed the last blogger freeroll, but it was in the middle of fathers’ day afternoon. Heck, the middle of any sunday is pretty inconvenient for anyone that tries to do sunday “Family” day.

  24. Mike says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:32 am

I’d definitely play in a freeroll as well

  25. chandrimac says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:37 am

Hey Wil, off-topic; I gather you’ve seen this already, but in case you haven’t, a link to a story on the Capitol Records, et al v. Jammie Thomas case, in which Sony has some interesting new definitions of piracy. Cheers, and hoping this made you as frothing mad as it did me.

  26. Russell S. says:
    3 October, 2007 at 11:40 am

I’d definitely play. I think I played in 2 WWdN tourneys (they often conflicted with other commitments).

  27. Squirrelgnome says:
    3 October, 2007 at 12:23 pm

I’d love to play if you can set it up.

  28. kristinalead says:
    3 October, 2007 at 12:33 pm

I sooo suck at poker, but I’d definitely be interested if, like others have said, it was on a day/time when I was able to do it.
Or is there a cheering section I can sign up for?

  29. angie k says:
    3 October, 2007 at 12:37 pm

I would send mojo everyone’s way but probably wouldn’t play, even in an awesome WWdN tournament. I’ve never played poker in my life and can’t imagine I’d be any good. I’ll send mojo your way for the World Blogger Championship, too! 🙂

  30. kaellinn18 says:
    3 October, 2007 at 12:40 pm

I would definitely be up for a WWdN Invitational, especially if it was a freeroll, since my roll is not currently on Stars. I will see you in the blogger tournament!

  33. zootnarf says:

I’d play. Free is my favorite price.

  34. Jewels says:

    I’d play as well!

  35. DJC says:

Maybe paige could find a designated player… *wink wink nudge nudge*
    …if that were allowed.

  36. fferret says:
    3 October, 2007 at 1:22 pm

Yes. Yes, I would. I’ve been trying to find a way to get funds into PokerStars (*wink, wink, nudge, nudge*) to be able to get into the Monkey games still going on, but have yet to do so. Any hints?

  37. fferret says:
    3 October, 2007 at 1:23 pm

Oh, and I have an LJ, does that count?

  38. Marc Costanzo says:
    3 October, 2007 at 1:23 pm

    Absolutely!!!Count me in!!!!!

  39. GenXer says:
    3 October, 2007 at 1:34 pm

I’m not the greatest at poker, but sure, I’d give that a shot if at all possible 🙂 That’d be fun.
I have no intention of starting any arguments, but it seems to me fatsvernon is on to something. If you look at, say, the newest Harry Potter audiobook, from barnesandnoble.com, it comes in at over 17 hours. Add in that you’re getting a physical product, with full color box art and sleeved discs, and it seems to me that there’s a lot more content both physically and chronologically, for $50.36. No comparison is expressed or implied as to the subject matter or the coolness of the topic! 🙂
I guess I’d just expect, for electronic delivery, a price at least closer to that of the hardcover book? Perhaps I’m way off.

    Yes

  42. Brittany says:
    3 October, 2007 at 2:22 pm

GenXer: For any other audiobook I’ve actually enjoyed (which so far are books by Bill Bryson and Terry Pratchett), that seems to be in about the right price range. Besides, if it were me I would think about it a whole lot before setting my price, and someone saying, “Shouldn’t it be cheaper?” wouldn’t make me go: “*facepalm* D’oh, you’re right! How could I not think of that?” *shrug* If it’s worth it to you, it’s worth it, if not, well. 🙂
As for poker… Hm… 3pm Eastern is 5am here, but I just might have to try it anyway. Of course, I only learned how to play about a week ago, so it’s not like I’d be in it to win, but that might be fun!
I do wonder if LiveJournal “counts” as having a blog, though.

  43. GenXer says:
    3 October, 2007 at 2:49 pm

Brittany: You make a very good point, and certainly I agree that it’s absolutely fine to charge whatever you like for your own material! I suppose the question we’d all end up asking, if in the same position, is how can I interest the largest number of people while still maintaining a reasonable profit?
I think that’s what struck me about fatsvernon’s comment – an interested party looking to d/l the book, and yet turned away by cost, just caught my attention.
    Freeroll amateur poker FTW!

The last time I played poker online was in jr. high on a BBS for credits. D’oh…that totally dated me.
I stomped them then, but it’s been too long. I’d lose what little dignity I have left if I played now.
But blog about it, if you do it.

  45. Beaver1224 says:
    3 October, 2007 at 4:11 pm

I would be totally in. Assuming RL doesn’t get in the way, of course.

  46. Dave Westbay says:
    3 October, 2007 at 4:20 pm

I am registered for the PokerStars WBCOOP, and I would, of course, want to play in any WWdN Invitational type tourney. I’d even pay a dollar. Or a few. But free is good.
Now I have to try to win that trip to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Blogger game. That would be so sweet.

  47. Claudia says:
    3 October, 2007 at 4:22 pm

I’d absolutely join in on a WWdN tournament. And the only reason I haven’t bought teh audiobook is that I was wondering whether I could purchase it and the next book together, but was too lame to get around to asking.
It looks like they go via totally different channels, so there’s may answer and soon you’ll see my money for both!
(Hmm, why do I have to both log in to typekey and repeat my info here to post? That wasn’t always the case. Okay, now I’m trying to post in IE because in Firefox I got “please correct the error in the form below, then press post to post your comment, but it didn’t mark any field as in error”. Hmph.)

  48. Claudia says:
    3 October, 2007 at 4:23 pm

*takes the close-quote in her previous comment and drags it back nine words where it belongs*

    You bet I would!

    Yes I would.
