I’m going to be at Phoenix Comicon the weekend of January 26-27. I’m excited to come to Phoenix because there’s a decent Eventful Demand for me, it’s only an hour by plane, and it’ll be the first time I’ve been there in over a decade. Plus, it’s a freakin’ comic convention so I’ll bring an empty suitcase with me.
I’ll have softcover and hardback copies of The Happiest Days of Our Lives, Volume 2 of Star Trek: The Manga, and if I can get O’Reilly to delver them to me in time, some copies of Dancing Barefoot and Just A Geek. If everything works out, you could theoretically come to the show, give me some shiny gold rocks, and walk away with The Collected Works of Me, Wil Wheaton.
I’ll be signing books and pictures and babies and robots all weekend, but on Saturday night at 8, I’ll be performing material from Happiest Days (probably Blue Light Special) and reading my review of Justice from TV Squad. (Oh, I’ll also have a few of the limited-edition chapbooks called Space Oddity that I made for the Big Honkin’ Creation Convention in Vegas last year that collect some of my TNG reviews. I think there’s about a dozen or so left.)
Though I used to go to a different city every weekend, I haven’t traveled much for cons for the last several years, choosing to stay home with my family and invest the costs associated with traveling into my home and Global Domination Fund. Perhaps more personal but certainly no less important to me, I also stayed away because I didn’t want to be one of those guys who goes to conventions and tells the same stories about something that happened twenty years ago over and over again. With all the books I’ve written in the last few years, though, and with the stuff that’s coming out this year, I feel like I have something new and unique to bring to audiences, so I don’t currently feel that way, which is really, really nice.
I don’t know where else I’ll be going this year, but if this goes well, I’ll be very motivated to find some other cons in other parts of the country to attend this year. No pressure, Phoenix, but Atlanta wants to talk to you about something.

Global Domination Fund. I knew there was another reason to not save for my kids’ college.
OMG! That is so very cool!!! And grrr… West Coast!!!
Plus, I’m am so very jealous of the lucky convention-goers that will get one of those chapbooks. So. Very. Jealous.
Lucky for Phoenix folks…any chance of making it out to New York Comic Con in April?
Hooray for Phoenix! Keep creeping east to Atlanta!
Let us know if the Spiderman booth gets tomatoes hurled at it.. Them nerd loyalists can be brutal folks.
I’m not going to make it to Phoenix, but I’m looking forward to a picture of you signing a baby!
Re: Global Domination Fund – So one of my guesses of your announcements (3. You’re taking over the world) wasn’t too far off… amazing!
Well I guess I should demand you for the Con in Vancouver…
Cool. One of these days I’ll have to wander down that way for some of these events. Have a great time!
Hmm… We’re two hours from Phoenix. Definitely have to consider this one.
Ooooo, we have collected them all now! Hooray!
Cool, will you be at the San Diego Comic Con in July?? 🙂
BTW, I think you meant deliver? I’m not sure.. maybe you meant O’Reilly to “delver” ’em to you…
I would *SO* buy a hardcover copy of “Happiest Days” if I were going to Phoenix…I thought they were sold out! (Is there any chance that those of us not present could order a copy?)
I second the New York Comic Con mention. Come out here! It’ll be fun! And its not in February this year so it won’t be butt-ass cold! Lovin’ the Radiohead lately aren’t you? You could be listening to worse…
$400 for a plane ticket and hotel room to come out and see you perform bits from THDOOL and buy one of those coveted chap books is steep, but tempting. Very tempting. I don’t think I can convince the fiance it’s a good idea to go but I might try. (If I can’t convince him to let me fly to Phoenix will you still sign my homemade copy? LOL. Err… I mean, what homemade copy?)
Very cool! I do hope you do more conventions if this one goes well. (I think it will.) Have fun! Yay for convention time!
Yay for Phoenix (for once!)!!!
Wil, we are so excited that you are coming to our town & the Con!
As the moderator of the Graphic Novel Book Club here in town, let me tell you how great it is that you will be here!
While we will certainly be in line to get books signed, hopefully you will be able to swing by our booth and see us too!
Best,

Wil! Look into GenCon this summer in Indianapolis! Please? =D
w00t! Guess I know what I’m doing that weekend. Can’t wait to hear your performance.
BE NICE PHOENIX! we Atlantans want to meet Wil!
Hurm, how to say this without sounding like a total jerk…
I thought there weren’t going to ever be any more hardbacks of THDoOL after the 300?
I don’t think that makes you sound like a jerk at all, bbaydar.
The 300 are the 300, and that’s never going to change. In order to make it even possible to do a hardcover version of the book, I had to order 500 total, and even that was pricey. I won’t do hardcovers again on my own (though I may work with an indie publisher in the future for special editions of future books.)
I wanted to do a signed, numbered, limited edition for WWdN readers, and that’s who got the 300. I always planned to carry the remaining 200 with me to whatever conventions I visited, give them to friends and family, and that sort of thing. I suppose I could just pulp them, but that seems wasteful to me, and isn’t really an option.
Now, I didn’t buy one of the 300, so I can’t speak for any of you, but from my point of view, being able to get a different hardback at a convention doesn’t devalue or diminish a single one of the 300.
DRAGON*CON! Oh for the love of all that is wonderful, please come to Atlanta for D*C. We have been begging and Demanding you on Eventful for TWO years. Plus, I’m actually on a panel for the TrekTrak this year.
Oh please oh please oh please!
Seconding the Dragon*Con plea! It’s the only US based event I go to each and every year (since I live in the UK), and I’ve been hoping for you to appear there for quite a few years now. It’d be fantastic if you could make it!
Comicon? I dunno – I’m not sure if I am geekified enough. I think I’d be spotted at the door as ‘the man’, to be perfectly honest. Maybe if I had an accomplice… I’ll get back to you.
Hi Wil,
Thanks for the reply. I don’t think having more hardbacks diminishes any of the 300. (#120 here 🙂 I should have clarified that in my original comment.
I was curious as to where the “extras” had come from, and why.
Thanks again for the clarification.
Baha
HOLY CRAP! I am so excited because I (any way to make this a 200 type point EYE) was the one who started it ine for Phoenix way back when – me me me – Thats me siegeanderson otherwise known as Kirimaku here!!!
Wowoh wow oh wow
NOw gosh darn heak I am heading up two No more problem dog/dog safety tables that day one in the east valley which is to raise funds to help raise and train assistance dogs for handicapped/therapy, disabled people (PAWS Rock n Roll) and another adoptathon with PACC911 in WAY north PHOENIX(Doesnt get much more north and still be in the county) Si I will be doing that till about 5. Now durn it I can come hot, sweaty, dishelved in a 53 year old woman it aint pretty- but I guess I can blend in to the crowd for your show which I have been wanting to see so bad! Then go home and come back in my secret disguise- a cleaned up non=scary 53 year old woman to get my FULL collection of what ever you got.
Wil, back on the other website, you had a student ask for comments about how your show had impacted us for a psychology study she was doing. Remember you asked us if some would do that? I was really glad to be fast enough to get in because I wanted to comment what I posted here about the incredible importance of what Wesley’s journey was as a “rites of passage” and vision quest. I walk a shamanic path, and when I was putting people on our ceremonies, or when we are talking in some of the college classes I teach, I would talk to them about catching those episodes with you specifically because it was so important to what we have lost in our society about growing up and becomming adults!
You can be pround Wil because what you were in going to imact these young adults for ever on a level they will not comprehend but will change them, empower them. It is a classic Hero’s Journey – YOUR Story (and Luxanna’s story which was a rights of passage into “wise woman” are the two greatest legacies that Gene Roddenberry ever did!
You are also a Bridger – but I have gone on too long.
So put together a bag marked Kirimaku, post somewhere how much the whole shootin works is and if you take (prefer) visa, check or cash (and how much) HEY! I would even pay on line ahead, if that is easier and I will be there!
Whoo hoo – this has already turned into a HECK of a 2008 after the WORST, most challenging year of my life!
I hope I can get my hands on one of the remaining hardbacks!
leathej1 – While I’m actually not a comic reader, I think we’ll go. Maybe we can be your accomplices!
Shoot – lol I was so durn Excited I forgot to spell check my post above – BUT I wanted to add – Wil will you sweet wife be there? I would so love to meet her – I really admire her for how she (well and you) stepped up to raise funds when her friend was so sick. SO many people are afraid and will leave their friends so are so life threateningly ill! Being with someone during that difficult journey – when death can come at any time -is one of the MOST precious gifts we can give to others!
But I was wondering if we could see about arranging a signing at one of the books stores out side the Con? I suppose it is too last minute but I would be glad to help get the word out – we ARE the 5th largest city after all!
I bet you would make a FABULOUS Speaker at a university like ASU – your Journey is so inspirational! So think about it for future plans!
OMG!!! I LIVE IN PHOENIX, but this is my sisters wedding this weekend in Texas!!!!!! Well One of these days!!!!
Hope you enjoy the weather…..LOL!! Glad to have you in our great state!!
Please God come to Dragon*con in Atlanta!
You know, I said to myself, “Self, if Wil ever comes to Atlanta, you’re going to finally plunk down for that book of his.”
Dyin to meet ya!
San Diego Comic Con! San Diego Comic Con!
I am so very excited because not only do I get to see Wil in person but I get to see Wil in person ON MY BIRTHDAY. Happy birthday to me!!! I knew there was a reason I’d held off on buying the books so far. Just needed the perfect opportunity. 🙂
Woo hoo! If you’re ever thinking of making it out to the Detroit-al area, let us know. We have cookies. Or am I thinking of The Dark Side? Eh, not much of a difference, I suppose.
This sounds like a ton of fun. You will have the best of several worlds, meeting fans, selling books, and being at a Con. You have worked hard and deserve this.
I am a fan and look forward to your stops in Seattle.
You’ve got an even higher Eventful Demand in Calgary! It’s lovely here in August, for Con-Version…:-)
Oh Wil. If you come to Atlanta, I would actually attend Dragon*Con for the first time and make my husband happy. Of course, he’ll spend all of his time in the gaming room anyway, but that’s OK. 🙂
I totally second the person who suggested you try GenCon Indy! I know you live closer to the SoCal convention, but from what I’ve gathered, the Indy con is WAY bigger. Plus, they’ve been expanding the existing Indianapolis Convention Center, so if it’s done by this summer, there will be even more room for GenCon Indy. It would be great to see you there, especially since I haven’t really been interested in the celebrities they’ve invited the last couple of years–except for Hayden Panetierre who magically appeared at one of the booths for a signing last summer and Sean Astin who was there the first year I ever went to a convention. I think that if you came, you would really raise the “celebrity” bar as well as extend the line at the signing booth, probably out the front door! And, I’m sure there are a lot of other Midwesterners like myself who don’t really have the funds to travel to either coast to see you in person. It’s just a thought! 😉
So, I collected all four announcements. I feel like I should be getting something here, some experience boost or a piece of the Triforce or something. Work with me here, Wil
I don’t think it diminishes the 300 at all, although I didn’t know you’d have some to buy at conventions. When you mentioned it in the post it was slightly confusing where the extra hardbacks came from.
Again, have a super, super time! (I’d dredge up a Texas convention to ask you to come to but it doesn’t matter what city you come to — just please come to the east region. Personally, it takes me 3-4 hours to drive to Dallas or Houston but 8-9 to drive to El Paso. *shudders*)
Have fun!! 🙂
As a simple, central Ohio fan, I’d recommend Marcon in Columbus over Origins. Lots of people around here would suggest Origins (because it’s a bigger gaming convention), but Marcon is more of a general speculative fiction fandom place. The downside is that it’s way earlier than most other conventions. It runs Memorial Day weekend, so Marcon 43 may just be already all booked up. However, I’m betting that Origins is going to be the bookend for WoTC’s 4th edition rollout with GenCon. In any case, Columbus is a fairly groovy city. We’ve got locally owned radio, at least 3 locally owned game shops, and some pretty awesome locally brewed beers.
Ok, Wil, you’ve opened yourself up to being barraged by Atlantans! LOL
If you come to DragonCon this year, you’ll be the ONLY attraction that my $65 is paying for. The Con has the same guests every year and we’ve heard the same ‘stories from 20 years ago’ soooo many times. We were going to more or less skip DragonCon this year – but not if you show up! It would be VERY refreshing to have someone new and with such a broad range of things to discuss. Of course with the Con overselling by thousands of tickets every year I doubt we’d get into any of your panels (I’m not much for waiting in line for hours) but we could at least come by your table and wait hours for that, right? 😉
In any case, we are coming out to Comic-Con in July and we hope to meet you then. Have fun in AZ!
Angela and Nick
So now you can talk about the books you wrote about what happened 20 years ago?
Hey, come back! I’m kidding! Aw, don’t be that way.
Atlanta! Atlanta!
Always wanted to see a Wil Wheaton reading in person.
that’s awesome. so when are you coming to new zealand?
LET ME KNOW 🙂
Right on, Wil! I’m glad you’re finally coming here. I wasn’t actually going to go to the Comic-con, but I think I will now for another chance to talk to you in person.
I was in L.A. a while back and saw your last performance in “Now that’s What I Call ACME” with Shane and Annie, et al. I kick myself for not introducing myself to you then as a fellow actor and writer. I promise I will rectify that.
And you’re coming at a good time. Phoenix in January is good weather…
Can someone answer about how vendors like Wil get paid for product at Cons? I havent been to one in close to 20 years, even then I didnt buy anything. Do I have to pay cash or do they accept credit cards? I dont know what he is going to bring or how much it all will cost. Is the show a separate cost?
I was kinda hoping to pay through pay pal before but I guess that is not an option. I hate to bring cash but I will, and I want to make sure I have enough if that is the only way to pay for all these things.
Thanks for any clarification.
On a similar note, and I know I’m exposing myself as a total convention virgin, but does Wil charge for autographs? If so, is it per autograph or per person? I just want to be prepared. I do plan to buy his new book, also, if he still has copies. But a friend of mine got Brent Spiner’s autograph once, and had to pay $30 unexpectedly (which seems like a lot to me). Apparently he was quite brusk, too, while I have Wil’s smiling face to look forward to. Thanks for appreciating your fans, Wil!
Wil, thanks for finally being able to come here.
But I may not make it out there (money issues), which makes me sad 🙁
