Anne and I went into a little coffee place in Eagle Rock this afternoon, on a spur of the moment date.
While we waited, the girl who poured our coffee looked at me from behind the espresso machine and said, "Are you who I think you are?"
I’ve heard this question a lot in my life, and there really isn’t a good way to answer it that doesn’t make me feel like a dick.
"I’m not sure," I said. "Who do you think I am?"
She hesitated before saying, in a soft and uncertain voice, "Are you . . . Wil . . . Wil Wheaton?"
"Yeah," I said. "That’s me."
She blushed and smiled. "You’re my favorite!"
Anne, took my hand in hers and squeezed it. Her eyes sparkled. "He’s my favorite, too," She said.
I looked at my wife. I felt the same way I did when she said, "Yes."
"That’s the best thing, ever," I said.

When rereading the story, I felt something quite different. Not knowing Anne or Wil personally, but being a married woman and having been in a similiar situation, what I felt came across was not only the love that Anne was expressing for her husband in a verbal affirmation, but also, was prideful of her situation and status as Wil’s wife and love.
It’s one of those moments that make the heart skip a beat when you are in love.
ahh omg that is so beautiful.
that is what i call true love.
that was so beautiful that a tear of happiness ran down my cheek.
Aww <333
It made me smile and feel all warm-fuzzley — I think you conveyed what you were trying to convey.
Megan
That is so beautiful. Thank you for today’s smile.
I heart Zeno
We monks are not usually so emotive, but I thought you could use a hug.
*Raises a glass of Guinness with Zeno and Wil*
It’s all good lad!
Awesome 🙂
Now if I was in your shoes my reply would be something like:
“Yes, I’m Michael Jordan!”
Then I’d stick out my tongue and pretend to dunk.
“Yes, I’m Donald Trump! We just felt like slumming tonight.”
“Yeah I was in the band Wang Chung. I’m Wang by the way, and I sure do miss Chung!”
“No I’m not Kreskin, I’m just his illegitimate son!”
“Yes, I’m Wil Wheaton but I wish I was Sipowicz from NYPD Blue. He could wear a short sleeve dress shirt to the Oscars and still look good!”
Feel free to use any of these if you like. God knows I don’t, or ever will need them.
Laters bro,
Mark.
Ohh yeah, I would say all those things in my previous comment not to be a dick but to make that person laugh. I would then shake their hand and say “thanks for the props G, recognize the acting skillz yo!” That way I would make them feel enlightened and appreciated.
As an aside to my last comment:
You know I’m no starfucker, as you can guess from my “Rub Picards bald skull for good luck” comment from the first time I talked to you on Pstars. So here’s a couple of my better meetings with celebrity.
This one happened today which is kinda funny in itself.
I took my mom grocery shopping, as any good son with an elderly handicapped parent would do. I’m leaning against the cheese counter waiting for my mom to get some stuff and beside me is the most famous Toronto sports radio guy.
So I turn and say to him, “hey Bob, my dad loves your show. He watches it almost everyday.”
He just smiles.
I then say, “but personally I don’t think you and your crew know anything about sports to begin with!”
That smile turned to a face saying fuck you jerk, and as he walks away I throw in, “If you ever need any tips, just call me.”
I didn’t feel bad cause Bob treats most of his callers like a dick.
Another good one was a couple years ago I met Samuel L. Jackson on the golf course. He was golfing with the son of THE guitar hero of Toronto (best rock trio ever) who is a customer of mine. So he introduces me to him.
“Sam, meet Mark, Mark this is Sam.”
Sam, “Hey Mark, how you doin?”
“Great Sam, nice to meet you.” I say
He says thanks.
I then say, “You know man, you’re a great actor and I really think you should have been nominated for at least a best supporting actor Oscar for your work in The Incredibles. I mean your facial expressions really brought about the mood of the scene man. Excellent acting there dude.”
He couldn’t stop laughing.
Wil…..
That story was SO sweet and then Anne’s comment at the end. Breakout the facial tissue or SIGH five times! 🙂
For some reason this comes to mind…..
🙂
Scott
Scott, perfect song!
I wonder how many of us since we read this post have turned to our other half and said to them “You’re my favorite.” My hubby and I are coming up on the 15th anniversary of our first date and I just had to tell him that he’s still my favorite. *SIGH* Like someone else mentioned, when your other half *gets* you it’s a beautiful thing. Wil, Anne definitely *gets* you in a most awesome way.
Aww, that’s so sweet. I took it that way. Screw the people who think it was jealousy that made Anne say that. As long as you know the truth, nothing else should matter, you know?
PS. You’re one of my favorites too!
Super cute story!!! The “AWWWWWW” factor is awesome! It’s the little moments that count; thanks for sharing! 🙂
You nailed the sentiment, dude. As a writer, you can’t let one comment steer you down the path of self doubt. If you do, you could spend the better part of your energy defending your writing. Energy better spent hugging that awesome wife of yours and letting her know that she is your favorite. Beautiful story….
Just here to assure you that 26 years in it can be just as “best thing, ever.”
I totally understood where Anne was coming from so the sentiment was spot on. And I feel that way about my husband too. 🙂
Free and downloadable is cool and all, but I like to hold and read and move to a different part of the house and run and show my wife the cool details. So I buy when I can. But I really do not like to be around people. Online bookstores keep me in books and now HeavyInk is getting me back into comics.
I just checked and they carry Fell, Crossing Midnight, Deadman Walking, Y the Last Man, Sandman, DMZ, Doom Patrol, Hellblazer, and Swamp Thing (and a couple thousand other titles).
doing three things at once, that one ended up on the wrong post.
Those reading it as a jealous wife thing must be the jealous types. It reads like a cutesy moment to me, all mushy and lovey and stuff. 🙂
What a sweet moment! Thanks so much for sharing that with us! =^..^=
Really great! I love it when my man gets compliments too, I’m the one he goes home with. So I know how special you are to your wife!! Great Job and A very sweet wife you have!!!
I don’t know where it came from, but one day I started telling my fiance, “You’re my favorite.” It just encompasses all the feelings.
That’s a cool moment in time. Good capture.
I’d guess there was a lot of pride soaked into the loving hand squeeze.
Wil, that is the best thing ever! I didn’t think it was ambiguous at all – some people just like to see the negative possibilities of every situation. 🙂
Wil Said: I wanted to capture the essence of that moment as unambiguously as possible; I’m sad that I didn’t.
your ‘unambiguity’ wasn’t lost on me Wil, I got it the first time; i knew exactly what you were trying to convey!
Funny thing is — i know EXACTLY how you feel!
But.. aren’t last minute dates the fricken BEST?!
I have to confess that I had no clue who you are. Sorry. I gathered you had something to do with Star Trek so I asked my husband to look at your photo and he confirmed that you are who he thought you were.
Ok, well, what I really wanted to say was that was such a sweet moment and I love how you wrote it! It sounds like you and your wife have a great relationship! 🙂
Wil,
Good stuff! I’ve been married to my wife for almost 18 years and I feel the same way! Glad to see that there really is “True Love” out there. Sounds schmaltzy I know, but oh well. Have a good one and enjoy your family.
