50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

it’s a good day to be a gamer

  • Games

A Florida judge recommends that Jack Thompson be found guilty of being
a complete and utter douche
27 of 31 counts of misconduct.

Tunis made 21 recommendations of guilt in relation to Thompson’s participation in Strickland vs. Sony,
an Alabama case in which the anti-game attorney represented the
families of two police officers and a police dispatcher slain by
18-year-old Grand Theft Auto player Devin Moore. Tunis also recommended
that Thompson be found guilty on four out of five counts relating to
his 2006 attempt to have Rockstar’s Bully declared a public nuisance in
a case before Miami Judge Ronald Friedman. An additional two guilty
counts stemmed from a non-video game matter."

While we wait breathlessly for the verdict to be delivered, we can play the Penny Arcade game! On the Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness is finally available for Mac, PC, Linux and from Xbox Live Arcade.

Just because I haven’t packed enough pure awesome into one post: Harmonix announced yesterday that next week’s Rock Band DLC will be the entire album The Cars, from the Cars. Time to watch Fast Times — well, part of Fast Times — over and over again in, uh, preparation.

Now Moving in Stereo’s stuck in my head. And for several reasons, this is NOT a good distraction at work…

I’ll never understand how a game, movie, book or music gets blamed for a person’s actions. Gaming is a facet of a person’s life not the whole life.

Oh, I so wish Mr. Florida Judge had, in fact, passed the judgment of your overstricken text.
Problem is, a douche actually has form and function in society. Jack Thompson does not and calling him a douche does a disservice to the hard working douche products out there today.

Why do people try to blame games and movies for their own madness? To quote Scream 2, “Movies don’t create psychos; they make psychos more creative.” If you’re already messed up, it’s only a matter of time!
They mostly create cases out of it to make a name for themselves! Now we know their name, they’ve succeeded already. I often wonder, if the media withheld the name of killers and low life idiots, would it make a difference? Who knows – maybe!
God I can’t WAIT for Rock Band to come out in the UK. The anticipation is TORTURE!!!
Too much awesomeness for one blog post, you’re killing me, dude!

It’s a good week to be a geek in general really, what with the announcement of the US release date of Spaced on DVD *and* the news that Steven “The Girl In The Fireplace” Moffat will be taking over as showrunner of Doctor Who.

My husband’s name is Brad, so that is one of the reasons that Fast Times scene is his favourite. The quote used to be his Win95 startup sound.
“Hi Brad…you know how cute I always thought you were?”

You must forgive my for a moment whilst I vent a little. In 22 years of Law Enforcement, I have NEVER had anyone tell me they did it because “uh, duh, my video game made me do it”. Stupid people do stupid things not because of video games, but because they are stupid, and as long as there are Lawyers wanting to make a name for themselves, they will feed of stupid people and video game companies with money. It truly is a good day to be a geek, as judges appear to finally have had enough.
The Cars and Fast Times. I think I will go order a pizza!

Oh man that brings back fond memories of seeing the Cars live in concert. It was an outdoor concert series called Mountain Aire held in Northern CA where they would alternate airshow acts and bands. Totally awesome since i am a pilot and love old rock music.

Might want to save the /Fast Times/ reruns until after Rock Band. Need to preserve your wrists! (I’m talking RSI from hitting rewind/play, honest)

Elliot Easton (The Cars’ lead guitarist) in an interview once laughed when asked about its usage “We had no idea it would be used in THAT context”.

I blame the parents of these kids. why are they allowing thier children to watch and play these video games?

  17. Athelas says:

As a teacher, I know a lot of kids who have very little parental supervision or guidance. Many parents actually know very little about the lives of their children.
[BTW Wil, I really enjoy reading your books, your blog, and your various columns.]

Rock Band has a lot of great customizable outfits and accessories, and I think you can outfit your female rocker with a bikini…but is there a pirate hat amongst the headgear options offered in the game? I’m just saying… – Glenn Rubenstein

Aww, someone else beat me to telling Jack Thompson to DIAF.
But yeah, video games don’t make people go out and kill folks. Hell, in my mind, it does the exact OPPOSITE. For me, shoot-’em-up games are a catharsis. They’re how I work out my extreme anger in a socially acceptable way. They do NOT make me be physically violent against people in the real world. I mean, shit, you never saw kids who spent hours playing Mario going out and jumping on peoples’ heads, did you?

I am opposed to capital punishment except for the crime of being as big an asshole as Jack Thompson.

  24. Meili D says:

Hmm, tough subject, the debate of whether art is responsible for violence in our society. I think the roots of the problem lie in the individual. However, I do feel that sometimes art (whether it be movies, books, games, etc) can be a part of the build-up to the explosion of that person’s tendency. Hence, if I ever have kids, their art input will be monitored and restricted in a healthy way (not control-freak everythings-banned) until they are adults. Then they make their own decisions, and I pray they have a good head on their shoulders.
