50,000 Monkeys at 50,000 Typewriters Can't Be Wrong

thirty-seven? in a row?

  • WWdN in Exile

I met Kevin Smith at Comic-Con, back in 2000 or 2001. The encounter was so incredibly embarrassing, I can’t bring myself to recall it, but can be summed up thusly: I made a complete fool of myself, and as a testament to his kindness, he didn’t make me feel like a total asshole. (Note for the record that I was a total blathering idiot, and also note that I defy every single person reading this to sit on a couch next to Kevin Smith and not lose their shit because you’re sitting next to One of Us who is living the dream.)

I’ve always lamented that I made such a fool out of myself, because if he remembers anything about me at all, it’s probably something like, “Oh man, that guy is an idiot.”

This morning, my inbox was filled with e-mail about this art show Kevin Smith’s doing called Crazy 4 Cult 2 that opens in Hollywood next Saturday, including a link to this fucking awesome painting, that completely owns in the face:

thebody.jpg

There are a ton of magnificent works on display in Kevin Smith’s blog, but that’s not even the best part of the post, which is this:

I saw “Watchmen.” It’s fucking astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off.

Remember that feeling of watching “Sin City” on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you’ll come close to watching “Watchmen.” Even Alan Moore might be surprised at how close the movie is to the book. March can’t come soon enough.

See? Living the dream.

The show opens on August 22 at Gallery 1988 on Melrose, which is next door to Golden Apple. He says that there were over 1000 people last year, so if you’re going, you should plan on showing up early.

That is an awesome painting. Kinda funny since I watched Stand By Me yet again last night before going to bed.
Watching made me think yet again, I wonder how many times (if any) you get the urge to say “Biggest one in four counties.”

That painting is really kick ass. I went to Crazy 4 Cult last year and it was a blast. They have a little party in the back and show trailers to old movies and other stuff. Should be a great time this year too. The art is great but way too expensive for me though. They do have cool posters and prints for a reasonable price.
Wil, Kevin has been having poker games for the past couple years that us regular folks can play in. There’s a tournament on the 23rd. Details here. It’s always a good time.

OMFG who WOULDN’T go completely pathetic over meeting the man?
I am so jealous right now.
I have wanted to meet Kevin since before Project Greenlight. I don’t go fangirl over many people but I would probably be a blithering idiot if I were ever that lucky.
Dang.. and that print is awesome!
    *still jealous*

That painting is truly awesome, I may look into how many shiny gold rocks I would have to trade for a print of that.

So all I need to do in order to watch geek-tastic movies six months in advance of their release date is become a self-taught, cult filmmaker? Following Kevin Smith’s example, if I start right now I should be able to see Sin City 5 in 2018.
So yeah, I would make an ass of myself too.

NNNOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Not you, Wil! You’re one of my favorite actors from my childhood, one of my favorite non-fiction writers, and someone I would totally love to hang out and play Rock Band with! Surely YOU don’t really think Kevin Smith is cool? I too have met the guy. My wife used to work for him. And he is a total jackass. He promised her a certain salary and benefits, then worked her to death, never gave her the benefits and instead, once she’d gotten his store up and running, made her choose between taking a pay cut or quitting! The dude is a tool, and a self-absorbed egomaniac who passes as cool to film and comic book geeks who don’t know what he’s really like. I was a huge fan of his too, until I learned who he was. Now it’s so hard for me to enjoy any of his movies, even the Clerks cartoon, which I’ve always thought was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. The painting with you and him together is cool if you’re a fan of his, but bummer, man. Bummer.

“I saw “Watchmen.” It’s fucking astounding.”
I love Kevin Smith and most of his movies. But his review of The Phantom Menace turned me off to any opinion he may have on other people’s movies.

Totally unrelated to this post, but I did a search and couldn’t find an appropriate entry.
Just wanted you to know I watched Fish Don’t Blink last night on a local station and really liked it. I’m sure it was reviewed as “quirky” when it was released, but I thought it was great seeing you in an adult role other than the CSI episode.
And the scenes with “Francis” had a good chemistry, and you do a pretty good “macho” punch as well as a good “drunk”.

Wil, I just saw this book on the Universal Digital Library and was worried it was some sort of Star Trek retcon: “Wesley’s Sermons”. Luckily it turns out to be just some 18th century Puritan’s angry rant.

    Wow. You live the life.
I know if I met him I too would geek out.
The same would be said if I met you. I geeked when I met Mark Waid! And Adam and Andy Kubert. It was insane how much I geeked.
    You are human, Wil.

P.S. Sorry the links don’t quite work, but I guess you get what you pay for with a free online library. Besides who’s going to email their web master to tell them their link to some ancient sermon is busted?

    great painting!
after seeing it i watched Stand By Me again last night. excellent movie. all you kids are superb. a great ensemble.
a couple things come to mind.
    1) luckily you don’t look like Richard Dreyfuss ha!
    2) the older version of the character you played, Gordie, (portrayed by Dreyfuss) is apparently a writer of non-fiction stories that lovingly recall tender memories of the time he was a kid.
    sound familiar?
    life, art and such

    Excellent painting!
Wil……..obviously you made an impression on him. It also had to have been positive. If it wasn’t, he would never have DONE this painting in the first place! Somewhere in his mind, your meeting must have influenced this.
Will definitely get down there before the show closes.

I love how your stories of awkward moments around celebrities reminds me, ever so clearly, and ever so shamefully, of how awkward I was when I met you at PAX last year. Don’t worry, I’ll be bringing you more uncomfortable silence and wide eyed staring this year… can’t wait.

I could only manage 15 minutes of Clerks and about 15 minutes also of Mallrate. Boring, disgusting and unwatchable. I’m happy for those who like Smith’s movies, but, frankly, I’d rather try to deal with an overdrawn checking account than watch another one of his “movies”.

It’s ok, Kevin Smith probably blathers like a school boy when he talks to himself. Mallrats is still top 10 all time favorite for me. I’m gonna have to pick up that big crazy for cult 2 poster, I love the character style.

I had a similar encounter with Mr. Smith at Vulgarthon. He was greeting all of us as we went in. I shook the man’s hand mumbled something and quickly moved on.
I get to see him do his Q&A live in November. Wife and I are totally excited to go!

I saw Kevin Smith once, in a mall, of all places. He was walking toward me surrounded by a dozen fanboys. I was rendered speechless and stared with my mouth open as he just steered around me. I had to go sit on a bench and that’s when I noticed that my fly was down.
